Ruan Tang looked at Yan Yu, and was burned by the doting look in the man's eyes, so she quickly looked away.
Yan Yu was also a man who could read between the lines. When he saw the young girl looking at him, he knew that Ruan Tang was determined to buy the house.
Before Ruan Tang could speak, Yan Yu stepped forward and quickly pulled out two rolls of "big unity" tightly bound together with rubber bands from his pocket.
As Yan Yu stuffed the money into Chen Fengshan's hand, he said, "Uncle Chen, here's two hundred. If there's anything in the house that needs repair, use this money. We'll make up the difference later. We've decided to take this house."
Before he finished speaking, he pulled out a brand new pack of "Da Lian Zhu" cigarettes from somewhere and stuffed it into Chen Fengshan's pocket without saying a word. He lowered his voice, but his tone left no room for argument.
"I'll have to trouble Uncle Chen with this."
The meaning couldn't be clearer—we want this house, and please don't mention anyone else.
Chen Fengshan squeezed the heavy money in his hand, felt the hard pack of cigarettes in his pocket, and looked at the decisive and calm young man in front of him. His doubts vanished instantly.
This person is capable and knows the rules.
He casually put the money into his pocket, a smile appearing on his face for the first time since they got off the bus.
"Alright! You'll come with me to collect the grain and take care of the formalities while we're at it."
With the house decided, the group of educated youth gathered in a circle, quietly arguing, finally came up with a rough plan.
Lin Xiangnan, as the representative, walked quickly to Chen Fengshan with a face reddened from the sun.
Her tone was still relatively polite: "Captain, we've discussed it and we'd like to go check out the family you mentioned first before making a decision."
Behind her, Zhao Weiguo, Chen Siming, and Gu Jinzhou, who had a cold expression, all nodded, clearly agreeing with the suggestion.
Only Shen Yishan was still pouting, looking unwilling, but she didn't say anything more.
Seeing that everyone had reached a consensus, Chen Fengshan readily nodded.
With a wave of his hand, he called out in a strong voice, "Alright, let's go to the brigade headquarters to put down your luggage first, then let's go."
As he spoke, he led the group, carrying large and small bags, into the courtyard enclosed by an adobe wall. When they reached the gate, they saw a sign hanging there that read "Jixiang Brigade Revolutionary Committee".
Ruan Tang and Yan Yu followed at the very back, carrying their things.
The group followed Chen Fengshan into the central hall of the brigade headquarters. Chen Fengshan pointed to the long bench in the room and said, "Just put your luggage here. You can rest for a while. Everyone is still in the fields. I'll find someone to call them." Seeing that the group didn't move, he added, "Don't worry, they won't get lost."
Lin Xiangnan and the others looked at each other, and in the end, Zhao Weiguo was the first to choose a chair and put his luggage down.
Chen Fengshan nodded directly at Ruan Tang and Yan Yu.
"You two, come with me to the accounting office first."
Upon hearing this, Lin Xiangnan and the others, who were about to follow the group to look at houses, all stopped in their tracks, their faces showing some confusion.
Shen Yishan, in particular, had a look of inquiry in her eyes, her gaze shifting back and forth between Ruan Tang and Yan Yu, as if trying to discern something from their faces.
Ruan Tang didn't notice the other person's gaze and followed Chen Fengshan outside.
Yan Yu only had eyes for the little girl in front of him. Seeing that she was leaving, he naturally followed her out, paying no attention to the expressions of others.
