Chapter 60 Brothers Save the Day
The morning sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, casting dappled shadows on the floor.
Xie Lin was awakened by a series of urgent knocks on the door.
He rubbed his sleepy eyes and got up. Lin Mianmian was still snuggled in the blankets, sleeping soundly, her long eyelashes casting a small shadow under her eyelids.
Xie Lin tiptoed to the entrance and looked through the peephole. The person standing outside the door made his pupils shrink suddenly.
It's Liang Cheng.
Liang Cheng was his brother, whom he had grown up with. He was the well-known young master of the Liang Group in the industry. They used to race cars and go to bars together, and were the most eye-catching pair of playboys in the eyes of others.
But ever since he broke ties with the Xie family, he has never contacted Liang Cheng again.
Xie Lin hesitated for a moment, then opened the door.
Liang Cheng, standing outside the door, was dressed in a well-tailored bespoke suit, his hair meticulously combed, exuding an air of nobility that seemed completely out of place in this old house.
He looked Xie Lin up and down, his brows furrowed so deeply they could trap a fly.
"Xie Lin, what the hell are you doing?" Liang Cheng's voice was filled with disbelief and anger. "I've been looking for you for half a month. If I hadn't seen you by chance at the warehouse yesterday, were you planning to hide from me for the rest of your life?"
Xie Lin's face paled, and he subconsciously took half a step back, blocking the view inside the door. His voice was dry: "Why are you here?"
"If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have known you'd gotten yourself into this state!" Liang Cheng pushed him aside and walked straight into the house, his gaze sweeping over the small living room and the faded sofa.
The table, set with cheap bowls and chopsticks, finally settled on Xie Lin's faded T-shirt. A pang of heartache welled in his eyes. "You live here? You live off that meager earnings from moving goods?"
Xie Lin clenched his fists, his fingertips turning white, his throat tightening, unable to utter a single word.
What he feared most was having his former brothers see him in his current wretched state.
The bedroom door was gently pushed open, and Lin Mianmian walked out rubbing her eyes. She was taken aback when she saw the familiar face in the living room, then smiled politely: "Liang Cheng?"
Liang Cheng's gaze fell on Lin Mianmian, noticing the faint smile on her clean face.
He suppressed the hostility on his face, nodded to Lin Mianmian as a greeting, and then turned to Xie Lin, his tone leaving no room for doubt: "Xie Lin, come with me."
"Where to?" Xie Lin asked, his head down, his voice muffled.
“Come to my company,” Liang Cheng said decisively. “My dad has already agreed to reserve a project manager position for you, with the highest salary and benefits. You can start work tomorrow.”
These words were like a thunderclap, exploding in Xie Lin's ears.
He suddenly looked up, staring at Liang Cheng in disbelief: "What did you say?"
“I’m telling you, you don’t need to do these hard jobs anymore.” Liang Cheng took a step closer and patted him on the shoulder, the force carrying the affection between brothers.
"The Xie family's affairs are not your fault. You don't need to shoulder all the burdens yourself. Brothers are there to support you."
Xie Lin's eyes instantly reddened.
He recalled his disheveled state these past few days, the warehouse owner's insults, the bruises on his shoulders, and Lin Mianmian's tearful eyes, and his heart was filled with mixed emotions.
It wasn't that he didn't want a decent job; it was just that after breaking ties with the Xie family, people in the industry avoided him like the plague, and no one was willing to give him a chance.
He had no choice but to set aside all his dignity and do the most tiring and difficult jobs.
"I..." Xie Lin opened his mouth, his throat choked, a thousand words stuck in his chest, and in the end only turned into one sentence, "I can't go."
"Why?" Liang Cheng frowned. "Are you embarrassed, or do you feel indebted to me? Xie Lin, even at this point, why are you still pretending to be high and mighty?"
“How can I go to your company looking like this?” Xie Lin gave a wry smile and pointed to his old clothes. “I don’t even have a decent resume. How can I be a project manager? I’m afraid I’ll embarrass you.”
"What's so shameful about it?" Liang Cheng scoffed. "Do you think I don't know who you, Xie Lin, are?"
"A project manager position is a piece of cake for you."
He paused, then softened his tone: "Rinko, we're brothers. I can't just stand by and watch you suffer because of life's hardships. Come with me to my company. With your abilities, you'll be able to make a comeback in no time. Then, you can repay me however you want."
Xie Lin looked into Liang Cheng's sincere eyes, then turned to look at Lin Mianmian standing to the side.
Lin Mianmian smiled at him, her eyes crinkling with encouragement: "Xie Lin, go for it. This is a good opportunity."
Sunlight streamed through the window, falling on Lin Mianmian's face; her smile was clean and warm.
Xie Lin felt as if his heart had been struck hard by something, and the grievances and resentment that had been building up for so long collapsed at that moment.
He took a deep breath, looked at Liang Cheng, his voice trembling slightly, yet incredibly firm: "Okay."
Upon hearing this word, Liang Cheng's tense lips finally broke into a smile, and he patted his shoulder heavily: "That's more like it, it should have been like this a long time ago."
As he spoke, he took out a document from his briefcase and handed it over: "This is the employment contract. The benefits are all clearly stated. Take a look. If there are no problems, go directly to the company to report for duty tomorrow."
Xie Lin took the document, his fingertips trembling slightly.
The handwriting on the paper was clear, and the salary and benefits far exceeded his expectations. With this salary, he could give her a better life.
Lin Mianmian walked over with two glasses of warm water and handed them to them with a smile: "Liang Cheng, thank you for coming to help Xie Lin."
Liang Cheng took the water glass, glanced at Lin Mianmian, then looked at Xie Lin and winked, "Xie Lin, your sister-in-law is beautiful and kind-hearted, you must treat her well in the future."
Xie Lin's cheeks flushed slightly, and he subconsciously grasped Lin Mianmian's hand.
Lin Mianmian's hands were warm and soft, carrying a reassuring strength.
"Alright, I have something to do, so I won't bother you any longer." Liang Cheng put down his water glass and straightened his suit. "Nine o'clock tomorrow morning, Liang Group building. Don't be late."
Xie Lin nodded and watched Liang Cheng leave.
The moment the door closed, he could no longer hold back. He turned around and hugged Lin Mianmian, his voice filled with barely suppressed excitement: "Mianmian, our lives are slowly going to get better."
Lin Mianmian hugged him back, her eyes slightly red, and nodded with a smile: "Yes, things will get better."
After Liang Cheng left, Xie Lin read the employment contract three times over, his fingertips tracing the gold lettering of "Liang's Group" on the paper, his heart still pounding in his chest.
Lin Mianmian went to the kitchen to cut a plate of fruit for him. When she brought it out, she saw him staring blankly at the contract, his eyes revealing an undisguised pride.
She walked over quietly and placed the fruit plate on the coffee table.
Xie Lin snapped out of his daze, pulled her into his arms, rested his chin on the top of her head, and said in a voice full of longing, "When I start my job, I'll take you to that steakhouse in the west of the city that you've been talking about for so long with my first month's salary."
Lin Mianmian popped a piece of apple into his mouth, the sweet juice melting on his tongue: "I'd rather eat your tomato and egg stir-fry at home."
As the two were talking, Xie Lin's phone suddenly rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
He frowned, pressed the answer button, and before he could even speak, a sharp and sarcastic female voice came from the other end of the line: "Xie Lin? You're that poor kid who chipped the paint, right? Pay up right now! Three thousand yuan, not a penny less!"
