Chapter 13 Cooking

The rest was mostly cornmeal and various coarse grains like potatoes and sweet potatoes. It wasn't much at all. Seeing just a few pounds of grain, Yunxi instantly felt insecure.
It's only August now, and if we want to wait until after the autumn harvest to distribute the grain, it will take at least three more months. Just thinking about it, we know that this amount of grain is definitely not enough.
It seems she's going to the legendary market, which is held every tenth of the month. Although there aren't many good things at the market, mostly things grown in people's private plots or picked from the mountains, at least it's a place to sell things.
But going to the market is a matter for later; let's fill our stomachs first.
She had absorbed all of Yunxi's memories and made them her own. With the fusion she had experienced today, she felt that she should be able to handle cooking with ease.
Looking at the less than two pounds of rice in front of her, she remembered that this stuff was delicious, so she decided to try it today. If it was good, she would definitely stock up on more next time she went to the market.
It's a good thing that rice isn't grown here; otherwise, we wouldn't feel so bad about spending so much on it.
Wash and rinse the rice to remove any sand, then cook it directly in a large pot.
Yunxi originally thought it would be difficult for her to start a fire, since she was originally a tree and had a natural fear of fire. Unexpectedly, she was quite talented in this area and managed to start a fire in no time.
Even though it was already dark and there were no candles lit in the room, for Yunxi, the night was like daytime, and it didn't affect her sense of light at all.
It took an hour to cook the rice inside the house, then steamed it again, and stir-fried two vegetables. Dinner was ready.
When Yunxi ate rice for the first time, she thought it was much tastier than the sweet potatoes she had for lunch.
She decided that if she had the chance, she would definitely bring back more rice.
I wonder if the white flour in the recipe is as delicious as it is; I definitely have to try it.
After washing the dishes, I realized I was all sticky and grimy after a long day, so I quickly boiled some water in the pot to wash up.
In the past, people would take a shower when it rained, since a big tree doesn't need to be showered as long as it gets enough water.
But once you become human, you have to be especially hygienic. She doesn't want to be dirty all the time and have any other smells on her body.
After all, she felt that the faint scent of peach blossoms on her body was quite nice, and she definitely wouldn't be used to other scents.
There didn't seem to be a separate place to shower while washing up, so Yunxi had no choice but to carry the hot water back to her room.
She wanted to take a good shower inside the house, but since there were enough houses in the yard, she figured she could set up a room specifically for washing up.
After a good night's sleep, Yunxi got up early the next day and made herself a bowl of noodles with flour in the kitchen.
Although the noodles were rolled out very thick, Yunxi thought they were pretty good for her first time eating them. It's just that her cooking skills were really lacking, but I can understand that it was her first time making them.
I only heard the loudspeaker signaling the start of work outside after I finished breakfast.
Looks like I'm early enough today.
I was prepared today, so I brought my basket and the sickle I used to cut grass yesterday when I went to work.
She would be cutting pig feed all the time, so she didn't return the sickle. Most people who cut pig feed used to do this; as long as they didn't lose anything, it didn't matter.
She also carried a machete, not forgetting what she had thought of yesterday: to go up the mountain and cut down two relatively straight tree trunks, so that if anyone else acted like Granny Yun, she could just grab a stick and start attacking without having to be polite.
When the horn sounded for the second time, we quickly locked the door, grabbed our things, and headed to the brigade headquarters square to assemble.
The first time the loudspeaker rings, it's to tell everyone to get up quickly and have some breakfast. The second time the bell rings, it's to tell everyone to gather quickly. When the third bell rings, it's time to start working.
Yunxi thought she was quite smart; she had only been here for a day and had already adapted well to human life.
She felt that if too much time passed, she would be no different from the little girl she used to be.
She was wearing the same hat she'd worn yesterday, and her face wasn't dirty anymore. After all, she wasn't afraid now; if anyone caused trouble, she'd just fight them.
When Yunxi arrived at the brigade headquarters, she found that there was no one cutting pig feed. Apart from herself, everyone else was working in the fields.
She suddenly felt like she didn't need to come here at all. As long as she completed the task of feeding two baskets of pig feed a day, it didn't seem to matter when she did it.
Then I turned around and walked straight down the mountain. I didn't have any experience today, but I'll know when I have more experience that I don't need to rush up the mountain.
Along the way, we also encountered other elderly people and children carrying baskets, and they all looked very happy.
I also ran into Grandma Huang, and quickly went up to greet her, "Hello, Grandma Huang."
Grandma Huang is the wife of Seventh Grandpa. Although they are several generations apart, they are still relatives within the five degrees of kinship. In addition, she originally liked Yunxi. So when she saw Yunxi greeting her, she smiled.
“Yunxi is here. Come with me to cut pig feed today. Your seventh grandfather asked me to take you out more often when I have free time. I don’t know if you can recognize the wild vegetables on the mountain. So you can come with me for the next couple of days. I’ll tell you everything that’s edible.”
Although Yunxi regretted having to cut pig feed herself, as she couldn't slack off when the two of them were together, she didn't refuse.
In the little girl's memory, there weren't many vegetables to eat in winter. Apart from the vegetables at home that were dried, she would dig up more wild vegetables on the mountain when they were available, soak them in water and dry them in the sun. When she wanted to eat them in winter, she would just soak them in water.
"Okay, thank you Grandma Huang. I'll work with you for the next couple of days and learn from you."
The moment Yunxi raised her head, Grandma Huang got a clear look at her face. She didn't think much of it, just that the little girl had grown up and was getting prettier.
In addition, as she got older, her eyesight became increasingly blurry, and she had some kind of problem, like a normal person with myopia of 300 or 400 degrees. She couldn't see clearly before, let alone now.
Just by looking at the person and listening to their voice, she can confirm who they are.
Seeing Yunxi's obedient demeanor, Grandma Huang took her directly to her secret base, where the wild vegetables were especially fresh and tender, with a wide variety of types, and even plenty of pig feed.
She would never bring an ordinary person along; almost everyone has their own secret base.
She was already being very generous by bringing Yunxi along.
