Yan Yu pushed the cart piled up like a small mountain, his steps light, following behind the old Party Secretary out of the courtyard.

The courtyard they bought was at the end of the village, requiring them to walk through most of the village to get there.

The road leading from the brigade headquarters to the end of the village was relatively smooth, mainly to facilitate the passage of tractors. However, the further up the hillside you went, the more potholed and uneven the road became.

But this seemed to have no effect on Yan Yu.

He pushed the cart steadily, the wheels rolling over the gravel, and the luggage and grain on the cart didn't even budge.

Ruan Tang, who was standing next to the car, was looking around curiously.

On both sides of the road, there are mostly houses built of adobe and stone, and every household has a courtyard wall. Occasionally, you can see one or two impressive brick and tile houses.

There are hardly any people on the streets right now. Those who can work in the village are in the fields, and those who can't do physical labor are mostly working in the tofu workshop at the entrance of the village. So right now, you can only see chickens, ducks and geese coming and going on the village roads.

After walking for about fifteen minutes, the old Party Secretary pointed ahead with his pipe, his voice hoarse.

"It's on the hillside ahead."

Ruan Tang raised her eyes.

Following the direction he pointed, we saw a separate courtyard standing on the hillside, with no other houses around. We could only see other houses about ten meters to the east.

Blue bricks and gray tiles, towering courtyard walls.

Behind the courtyard are rolling, dark green mountains, and a winding path brushes past the courtyard before quietly disappearing into the depths of the verdant forest.

Ruan Tang's heart skipped a beat for no reason.

This place... is absolutely wonderful.

"This place is quiet."

Chen Zhangmin tapped the ash from his pipe on the sole of his shoe and exhaled a long smoke ring.

"It's some distance from the river, so even if there's heavy rain and flooding, it won't reach here."

"We just have to be careful of wild animals on the mountain, but don't worry, the walls are high enough, and our militia patrols the foot of the mountain every day, so it's very safe."

He paused, then pointed in another direction with his pipe.

"A little over there is the home of Captain Chen Fengshan."

"Just a few more steps and I'll be at my house."

"From now on, if anything happens, just shout in the yard, and we'll all hear you."

As they talked, the three of them climbed the gentle slope and arrived at the entrance of the courtyard.

The two courtyard gates are right next to each other, both heavy wooden doors with simple copper rings, and the stone walls are more than two meters high and very sturdy.

The old Party Secretary took out a bunch of keys from his pocket, first opened the west door, and then opened the east door.

“Look, the courtyard on the west side is bigger, and the one on the east side has a well.”

"You guys clean up first, check where there are any problems, and Fengshan will bring people over to fix them in a bit."

After giving his instructions, Chen Zhangmin waved his hand, put his hands behind his back, and strode back to the brigade headquarters.

With the old Party Secretary gone, only Ruan Tang and Yan Yu remained under the tall courtyard wall.

Yan Yu's gaze fell on Ruan Tang, and he asked in a low voice, "Which one do you choose?"

Ruan Tang pointed eastward with her slender finger almost without hesitation.

"I want the one with the well in it."

She hated trouble more than anything in her life, and having a well made drawing water much easier.

A knowing smile appeared in Yan Yu's deep eyes, showing no surprise whatsoever.

As expected, his little darling chose the one on the east side.

"good."

He answered decisively, his voice filled with a doting affection he himself didn't realize.

Yan Yu pushed the cart and walked into the east courtyard first. The courtyard was full of weeds. He didn't put down his luggage in a hurry, but bent down and started pulling weeds.

Ruan Tang, carrying two crossbody bags, stepped into the house.

The house has three main rooms, with the central room being the main hall and the two side bedrooms, each with a kang (heated brick bed). The layout is quite nice.

However, since no one lives there year-round, the house is covered with a thick layer of dust, cobwebs hang in the corners, and a musty, musty smell wafts out.

Ruan Tang frowned slightly.
