The words of Captain Chen Fengshan instantly caused an uproar among the educated youth.

Go to a fellow villager's house?

The rent is only one yuan a month, and meals are extra?

Lin Xiangnan and the others never expected that after all their troubles, they wouldn't even have a place to stay for the educated youth.

This is quite different from what they had heard in the city about "vast lands and great opportunities."

"B-Brigade Leader, we haven't even been assigned a settlement for educated youth here?" Lin Xiangnan originally thought that at the very least, there would be a few simple rooms, but he never expected it to be like this.

The three male educated youths, Zhao Weiguo, Chen Siming, and Gu Jinzhou, looked at each other, their expressions not very pleasant.

They are men, so it doesn't matter if they are rough around the edges, but they don't even have a place to stand, and they are feeling uneasy.

"What? There are no educated youth settlements?" A sharp female voice suddenly rose in pitch, and Shen Yishan's eyebrows furrowed, her pretty face turning bright red.

She was already seething with anger because Gu Jinzhou had been giving her the cold shoulder the whole way, and now she finally found an outlet for it. "We came all the way from the city to help with the construction, and this is how you treat us? You won't even provide us with a place to sleep? Is this how you treat us educated youth?!"

Gu Jinzhou, standing beside her, looked at her coldly with a livid face. Why would such a stupid woman want to get engaged to him?

Since you've never cared about him since he was a child, why insist on arranging his marriage?

Gu Jinzhou pursed his lips, his eyes dark and unfathomable, coldly watching Shen Yishan make a foolish move, but his tightly clenched fists betrayed his suppressed emotions.

Chen Fengshan's temples throbbed from the shrill voice of Shen Yishan.

He interrupted her gruffly, his face dark, "Comrade, what you're saying is not fair! What do you mean we won't arrange anything for you? Haven't we already told you the policy? This is the first time our brigade has suddenly received a notice that educated youth are coming. We held a meeting overnight to discuss countermeasures."

"Do you think building a house is like blowing up a balloon, something you can just build whenever you want? Besides, the wheat harvest is just around the corner, and the team is short-handed. How can we have time to build houses for you right now?"

He paused, his tone becoming increasingly angry: "The resettlement allowance given by the higher-ups was partly intended to solve your housing problems. We don't have time to build houses for you now! Back when we were making our revolution, we survived living in caves and eating tree bark. You city kids, on the other hand, haven't even started working yet and you're already being picky!"

"You..." Shen Yishan almost choked on her words, and was about to say something more when Lin Xiangnan interrupted her, "Alright, do you think you can get a house by just yelling here?"

They were all newcomers, and it wasn't very smart of them to offend the brigade leader right away. The group huddled together, discussing whether to build a new house together or rent a house from a fellow villager, but they all found it too troublesome and couldn't come to a conclusion for a while.

Ruan Tang stood quietly to the side without participating in the discussion. Only after Shen Yishan stopped making noise and the others gathered around to discuss it did she walk over to Chen Fengshan.

Ruan Tang had long anticipated the harsh conditions in the countryside, and unlike others, she did not find it difficult to accept the lack of readily available settlements for educated youth.

Staying at a fellow villager's house would be inconvenient with so many people around, and she wouldn't be able to use the things in her spatial storage. It would be best if she could live alone.

"Captain, are there any vacant old houses in our village?"
