Chapter 162 Finding Faults and Making Things Difficult
Reading Settings
Several middle-aged women sitting at the village entrance believed it: "If that's the case, then you really are going to live a good life."
For the girls in the village to want to become officers' wives was simply wishful thinking, but they couldn't resist the fact that the officers had a capable relative.
Ding Rumei never mentioned that Huang Meiling paid her wages every month; she only said that she was going to help and that she would go to the village to repair roads when things got better.
She said with a smug look on her face, "There's no way around it, I'm too capable. My aunt is also a discerning person. If it were someone else, I wouldn't bother going. But we're family, so there's some face between us, and she's an elder."
The villagers didn't know what was going on; they just said she was very lucky and would be a city dweller from now on, no longer needing to go back to the village to farm or be a peasant.
Upon seeing Shu Ying, Ding Rumei extended her hand: "You must be Zhiyan's wife, right? You're quite pretty, but you're not quite good enough for my brother. Looking at your delicate skin, you probably haven't done any housework before, have you?"
Li Dongfang's expression changed. Was this a relative?
They're here to cause trouble, aren't they?
Shu Ying felt a little uncomfortable, but considering that it was Huang Meiling who had sent her, she held back.
She led the person into the house, implying, "Yes, my parents have always spoiled me, and my in-laws are also good-natured. They were worried that I would get tired, so they specifically asked you to come and help."
Ding Rumei didn't understand the meaning behind Shu Ying's words; instead, she became even more proud.
"I'm not saying this to be mean, but you city people are just being picky. In our village, someone your age can do any kind of work with ease. You're just lucky to have married my brother. Someone as lazy and good-for-nothing as you would never be able to get married in our area."
Song Zhaodi's eyebrows furrowed into a knot, making her look even more like Xie Zhiyan.
She casually placed Ding Rumei's belongings outside the door, stood in front of Shu Ying, and responded to her rudeness.
"I wonder if you're married or not, and your husband is willing to let you out?"
Ding Rumei was speechless. She came here this time hoping to find a city man to marry. She had long known that she was not from the village and that she would one day become an outstanding person. Fortunately, she did not rush into marriage.
She came in from outside, very familiar with everyone. She had been on the road for who knows how many days, and hadn't even washed her hands. When she saw Yueyue and Yangyang in the living room, she reached out and pinched their fair little faces.
"You know what, those two kids are quite strong. My brother makes a good living, doesn't he?"
Shu Ying sat on the sofa, already showing signs of impatience.
This person isn't here to help; they're clearly taking over and treating this place like their own home.
If she were truly reasonable, she would welcome her with open arms, but Ding Rumei clearly seemed to lack common sense.
Song Zhaodi picked up the two children and said, "You need to pay attention to hygiene in the future, especially with the children. You can't pinch a child's face."
Ding Rumei didn't seem to care much: "Don't make a mountain out of a molehill. Aren't you a nanny too? We're even relatives. Would I harm my own child?"
As she spoke, she walked around the house for a while, finally choosing a sunny room and nodding in satisfaction.
"Sister-in-law, I think this room is quite nice. I'll stay here from now on. Is that alright?"
That was where Li Qingqing used to live with her child; it was a bit larger, about the same size as the master bedroom.
Before Shu Ying could even respond, she rudely sat down on the sofa and looked at Song Zhaodi with an air of superiority.
"How can you be so insensitive? I've been here for so long and you haven't even poured me a glass of water. Go get me some water."
She had traveled a long way and hadn't eaten anything along the way. Although they were all here to work, they were still family.
Song Zhaodi felt uncomfortable, but she didn't want to cause trouble for Shu Ying. Just as she was about to pour water, Shu Ying stopped her and took a foam cup from under the coffee table to pour her some ordinary water from the teapot.
"It's not easy for my cousin to come all this way, did the journey go smoothly?"
Shu Ying patted Yangyang, signaling the two children to go out and play.
Ding Rumei leaned back on the sofa, looking around. The house was quite large and spacious, but when she faced Song Zhaodi, she started to find fault.
“We country folk don’t really know what’s going smoothly or not. But sister-in-law, you’re obviously not good at managing a household. Where did you find this old woman? Is she even honest? Look at how haphazardly things are arranged in this house. And this sofa is so soft; it’s bad for your back.”
Shu Ying glanced apologetically at Song Zhaodi, suppressing her nameless anger. This person was disgusting; if she stayed here, the house would become an unbearable mess.
Originally, they wanted her to share some of Song Zhaodi's workload, but they didn't expect to invite such a demanding person. She started bossing people around not long after she arrived, acting as if she were the master of the place.
"Cousin, you have a child at home. Your mother-in-law said she will pay you a salary every month. We usually do our research before hiring a nanny. I wonder what kind of cooking you are good at?"
Ding Rumei was displeased to see that Shu Ying was really treating her like a nanny. She said in an unfriendly tone, "It's just everyday meals. Don't worry, I'd rather use someone else than a stranger."
As she spoke, she began gesturing and pointing at the yard again.
"You city people are really something, hiding yourselves in such small courtyards. In our countryside, every household has a big courtyard, much more spacious and bright than yours."
The smile on Shu Ying's face disappeared.
Ding Rumei could tell that Shu Ying was unhappy, but since her brother was in charge at home and they were relatives, she would have to do whatever he said.
As she thought about it, she saw the groceries that Song Zhaodi had just bought on the dining table and looked at them with disgust.
"Is this the fish you bought? It looks nice, but it's expensive and tastes terrible. And these vegetables, they look expensive too, and they don't look as good as the ones from the countryside. You don't know how hard my brother works to earn money, you don't know how hard he works to make money."
Then she looked at Song Zhaodi and said, "Where are you from? You're not from your sister-in-law's family, are you? Judging from your behavior, you seem to think you're the head of the household."
Song Zhaodi glanced nervously at Shu Ying. Ever since Shu Ying rescued her on the train, she had been thinking about how to repay her and Li Qingqing, and never thought of taking over their place.
“Yingying, I…”
She felt uneasy, afraid that Shu Ying might feel uncomfortable.
Although she makes the decisions about things at home these days, everything she buys is with the consent of Shu Ying and Li Qingqing.
Shu Ying patted her hand, her expression not changing much.
“Cousin, if I remember correctly, your mother-in-law asked you to help take care of the child, right? I don’t know how much she paid you a month, but Sister Song was someone I specifically hired to take care of the child. Every word you say needs to be supported by evidence.”
