Chapter 124 Pretending not to know

Half an hour later, the broken leg bone was finally put back in place and fixed. Doctor Xu wiped the sweat from his forehead and gave detailed instructions to the soldiers who had gathered around.

"Don't get it wet for the next two weeks, and don't lift anything heavy. I'll come to change your dressing every day. If the pain gets too bad, call the clinic."

After settling the wounded, she found a clean straw mat to sit on, looked at Jiang Yutang and asked with a smile, "Did you run into someone you know just now?"

“It’s my third brother. He also works in this military camp. We just happened to run into each other.”

Jiang Yutang clenched her hands uncomfortably, looking at Doctor Xu with a hesitant expression.

Dr. Xu waved his hand knowingly: "Since we've run into each other, let's go over and catch up for a while. We'll go back to the clinic together after dinner."

"Thank you so much, Dr. Xu!" Jiang Yutang excitedly hugged her arm, then turned and ran quickly out of the tent.

The soldiers beside him stared in astonishment, then looked at Doctor Xu with envy.

Dr. Xu watched her excited figure disappear into the distance and shook his head helplessly: "That girl."

Jiang Yutang tiptoed to the outside of the next tent, peeked inside, and saw Jiang Huaiyu sitting together with several soldiers, chatting and laughing.

Jiang Huaiyu caught a glimpse of her at the tent entrance and immediately stood up and walked out.

"Hey, where are you going?" a bearded soldier next to him teased with a smile. "Is this girl your wife?"

Jiang Huaiyu frowned and corrected her seriously: "Don't talk nonsense, she's my own sister."

Upon hearing this, the soldiers' eyes lit up instantly, and they all greeted Jiang Yutang with exceptional enthusiasm, wanting to leave a good impression on her.

Jiang Huaiyu shook her head helplessly: "Hey, stop surrounding my sister, go to the side."

He led Jiang Yutang to a secluded tent at the edge of the camp before stopping and looking her up and down: "How have you been lately? Are your parents and sisters-in-law adjusting well?"

"All is well, everyone is at peace."

But when Jiang Huaiyu looked at her smiling face, his eyes were full of heartache.

"Stop being stubborn. I've heard everything from the brothers in the camp. A few days ago, a girl was crying and begging for help at the city gate. I knew it was you the moment I heard her description of her appearance and clothes."

As he spoke, a deep sense of self-reproach appeared on his face: "If I had known, I would not have joined the army. It seems like I got a good job, but I can't even protect my family, and I don't even know that you have been wronged."

Jiang Yutang was taken aback, then grinned and explained to him, "Brother, it's all a misunderstanding!"

She recounted in detail how she had pretended to cry and act cute to get the soldiers to help transport supplies, and also described her family's current situation in detail.

After hearing Jiang Yutang's words, Jiang Huaiyu's tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed, and she finally felt relieved.

"It's good that you're alright, it's good that you're alright. Don't overwork yourself at the clinic. If anyone bullies you, ask someone to send me a message."

Jiang Yutang gave a mischievous smile and teased, "Then you'd better be ready for my letter anytime! I'll give you a list of people who bully others, and you can teach them a lesson one by one for me."

"Hey, I won't do anything shady."

Jiang Huaiyu burst into laughter, and the self-reproach and tension between her brows vanished instantly.

The brother and sister sat side by side on a stone bench next to the tent and chatted about everyday things.

Upon learning that the "young nobleman" was preparing to get married, Jiang Huaiyu also felt somewhat regretful.

He patted Jiang Yutang on the shoulder and comforted her, "But don't worry. Look around this military camp. If there's someone you like, your third brother will help you play matchmaker. I guarantee things will be handled perfectly."

Jiang Yutang pouted and glared at him, complaining, "Third Brother and Fourth Brother haven't even settled down yet, why are you urging me? You should settle your own marriages first before worrying about mine."

"Do you think Third Brother doesn't want to?"

Jiang Huaiyu sighed, narcissistically smoothing a strand of hair from her forehead, and said helplessly, "I'm surrounded by men every day, where am I supposed to find you a sister-in-law? Your fourth brother is also a clueless person, like a fool."

These words made Jiang Yutang laugh out loud. After laughing for a while, he suddenly remembered the important matter and asked, "By the way, Third Brother, did you see Cheng Dai'er in the military camp?"

Jiang Huaiyu was taken aback for a moment, then nodded: "I've met her a few times. I heard she went to work at the armory. I didn't expect she would have the skill to forge weapons. The veterans in the camp all praise her for her craftsmanship."

When he spoke of Cheng Daier, his eyes shone with admiration.

Jiang Yutang saw this and smacked her lips, but she didn't say anything, only smiling and agreeing with a couple of comments.

She glanced at the sky; the sun was already setting in the west. She quickly stood up and said, "It's almost time. I should go back to the clinic. Doctor Xu is still waiting for me."

Jiang Huaiyu accompanied her to the front of the military tent. Just as they reached the door, they saw Doctor Xu come out from inside.

When Doctor Xu looked up and saw Jiang Huaiyu, his eyes lit up at first, but then he awkwardly adjusted his clothes.

Jiang Yutang stepped between the two and introduced them: "Dr. Xu, this is my third brother, Jiang Huaiyu. Third brother, this is Dr. Xu. He has always taken good care of me at the clinic."

Jiang Huaiyu smiled brightly and cupped his hands, saying, "My little sister is still young, so I'll have to trouble Dr. Xu to take good care of her at the clinic."

Doctor Xu lowered his eyes, avoiding his gaze, and softly replied, "Miss Jiang is intelligent and capable, no trouble at all."

Just as the two turned to leave, they saw a group of soldiers walking towards them, led by Cheng Lanzhou.

He was dressed in military uniform, with a sword at his waist, and stood tall and straight like a pine tree. No matter how you looked at him, his demeanor and attire were different from the soldiers around him.

Cheng Lanzhou also noticed Jiang Yutang instantly. Their eyes met quickly before she looked away as if she had just seen a stranger.

Jiang Yutang's eyelids twitched uncontrollably twice, a strange feeling rising in her heart. She then composed herself, pretending not to see him, and brushed past him.

On their way back to the clinic from the military camp, the two walked quietly, and even the sound of the wind blowing through the grass was exceptionally clear.

Jiang Yutang felt suffocated and was about to find a topic to break the silence when she turned her head and saw Doctor Xu staring blankly at the ground, with a hint of gentleness on his lips, looking exactly like a girl with a secret heart.

She blinked, wondering to herself: Could it be that she ran into someone in the military camp just now?

The first person that popped into my mind was Cheng Lanzhou.

Indeed, a man like him would inevitably leave an impression on any woman who met him.

Jiang Yutang cleared her throat and tentatively said, "Dr. Xu, among the group of soldiers we met outside the military camp just now, there was one who looked quite outstanding, with a different temperament from the others."

"ah?"

Dr. Xu snapped out of her daze, her eyes still somewhat unfocused. After a moment of stunned silence, she realized who she was referring to and said with a sudden realization, "You mean Cheng Lanzhou? I heard he used to be a general, it's just a pity... he seems to be married with a wife."

"Married and has a wife?"

Jiang Yutang abruptly stopped, filled with doubt.
