Chapter 123 Going to the Military Camp

Cheng Dai'er stood at the door, covered in dust and smelling of iron filings from the weapons workshop.

Jiang Yutang and Cheng Daier exchanged uneasy glances. They wondered how much of their conversation about "divorce" the other had overheard.

"Auntie, you're only just getting back?" Jiang Yutang chuckled awkwardly, trying to cover up her earlier embarrassment.

Cheng Dai'er responded coldly, her gaze sweeping over the tent before finally landing on Jiang Yutang: "I came to thank you for the quilt and supplies you sent; they're very warm."

Her tone was flat and emotionless.

Jiang Yutang smiled and said, "It's nothing, I'm just glad you like it."

Remembering Lin's solitary demeanor, she hesitated for a long time before holding back her words, and simply offered a word of comfort: "The work in the military camp is heavy, you... take care of yourselves."

Cheng Daier stared at her for a few seconds, her eyes sharp as knives, before suddenly speaking: "I will make things clear to Lan Zhou about the divorce, and I won't hold you back."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Yutang breathed a sigh of relief, but also felt inexplicably awkward. It seemed that the other party had indeed heard every word of their conversation.

Cheng Daier didn't say anything more, turned around and lifted the curtain to enter the tent.

From that day on, although the two families were only a few steps apart, they really had no contact with each other anymore. When they met, they would just nod to each other, and there was no longer the familiarity they had on the road to exile.

Every day after returning from the clinic, Jiang Yutang and her three older brothers would huddle together in the tent to assemble beds.

The four siblings worked together exceptionally well and completed the assembly in three days.

Together they packed up the tent, replacing the old bamboo mats with clean coarse cloth mats, arranging the beds side by side, and then using a thick blackout cloth to divide the tent in the middle. The bunk beds were neatly arranged, giving it a real sense of a modern mixed dormitory.

Mu carried Xiaoxiao up to the top bunk and exclaimed in delight, "This bed is so sturdy! It's much more comfortable than squeezing together."

Jiang Yutang chuckled and softly suggested, "Sister-in-law, why don't you take Xiaoxiao and sleep on the lower bunk? It'll be easier for you to get up at night."

Because she was far pregnant, Zhu was unable to sleep comfortably and could only sleep on the lower bunk.

"Eeya eeya!"

Xiaoxiao stretched out her arms and kept climbing to the top bunk, determined to sleep there. Mu shook her head with a helpless smile.

"I'll sleep on the top bunk with her, and let Mom sleep on the bottom bunk."

Lying on the brand-new mattress, wrapped in a soft Xinjiang cotton quilt, I was finally free from the hard, damp floor. I figured my sleep would be much more restful now.

Only the even breathing could be heard inside the tent. Suddenly, Madam Yun spoke, her voice tinged with hesitation: "Tang'er, how is that young master who helped us before?"

Jiang Yutang forced a smile and continued fabricating a story: "He's following his family's arrangements and has already gotten engaged. They'll be getting married in a few days."

As soon as she said this, her family couldn't sit still and pressed her for details about what had happened.

"Why aren't you all asleep yet...?" She buried her head in the blanket in exasperation. "Please leave me alone, I don't want to talk about this anymore."

Everyone assumed she was heartbroken and stopped talking.

Jiang Songzhi sighed from the outside: "What a pity. I thought it was a destined relationship."

The next morning, Jiang Shengan called Jiang Yutang to his side, his expression serious.

"Since that young master is preparing to get married, you should cut off all contact with him. Remember the favors you received from him before, but don't take any more benefits from him in the future, lest you ruin his reputation and give others cause for gossip."

Jiang Yutang quickly nodded in agreement: "Father, I understand."

Now that his family is safe and secure and they have enough supplies, the identity of this "mysterious young nobleman" is no longer needed. This is a good opportunity to completely eliminate this hidden danger.

Life returned to its usual rhythm, and Jiang Yutang spent her days organizing medicinal herbs and treating refugees at the clinic, leading a fulfilling and peaceful life.

A few days later, in the morning, she was helping Doctor Xu grind medicine when the door of the clinic was suddenly kicked open, and a soldier rushed in, sweating profusely, his voice urgent.

"Dr. Xu! Something terrible has happened! During today's drill, one of our brothers fell off the high wall and can't move his leg. You must come with me to the military camp immediately!"

Upon hearing this, Doctor Xu immediately got up to pack his medical kit and turned to ask Jiang Yutang, "Since you came to Danzhou, you haven't been to the military camp yet, have you?"

Jiang Yutang shook her head, looking at the other person with some anticipation.

"Come on, let me show you!" Dr. Xu said, pushing another spare medical kit towards her.

"Okay!" Jiang Yutang excitedly agreed and quickly picked up her medical kit and followed behind.

The three hurried toward the military camp and saw rows of tents and training soldiers in the distance, just like the scenes in the TV series, only the environment was worse.

The ground was uneven and full of potholes, with clothes drying everywhere and weapons scattered about. The air was thick with the smell of sweat and dust.

As a rare female doctor in the military camp, Jiang Yutang was immediately locked onto by a series of gazes as soon as she stepped inside.

She suddenly understood why Doctor Xu had dressed as a man.

The soldier leading the way lifted the curtain of a military tent, and a cacophony of smells—a mixture of sweat, medicine, and foot odor—immediately assaulted the senses.

The smell was exactly the same as when she did dormitory checks in college; it was so pungent that it was almost impossible to breathe.

The stench made Jiang Yutang subconsciously take a half step back, close her eyes briefly, and then open them again with fluttering eyelids.

"What's wrong, Miss Jiang?" the soldier who led the way asked kindly.

"Oh, it's nothing, it just stings my eyes a little." She quickly rummaged through her medical kit for a clean piece of fine cotton cloth, dipped it in some peppermint oil she carried with her, tied it to her face as a mask, and then crawled back inside.

When Dr. Xu saw her in her protective gear, he couldn't help but laugh out loud: "You'll get used to it after a few more times."

Jiang Yutang gave a dry laugh, sounding somewhat desperate: "Dr. Xu is really amazing."

The tent was covered with dry grass, and several soldiers were gathered around it. The wounded soldier lay on the ground, his face pale, his left leg twisted at an unnatural angle.

"Dr. Xu, you've finally arrived!" The surrounding soldiers quickly made way for him.

Dr. Xu squatted down, first feeling the injured soldier's leg bone, then asking a few questions about the situation, before turning to Jiang Yutang and saying, "Go and prepare the splints and bandages, and get a bottle of strong liquor to disinfect."

Jiang Yutang stepped forward in response, and as soon as she opened her medical kit, she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure flashing past the tent entrance.

"Third Brother!"

Jiang Huaiyu, holding a weapon in her hand, seemed to have just finished training. She opened her eyes wide in surprise: "Little sister? What brings you here?"

"I came to the military camp to treat patients."

Jiang Yutang gestured with her chin toward the tent, her tone urgent: "Now is not the time to chat. Are you free later?"

Jiang Huaiyu pointed to the empty tent next to him: "Yes, I can take a break in the tent next door for a while. Come find me when you're done."

"Okay, see you later." Jiang Yutang agreed, turned around and handed the prepared splint and strong liquor to Doctor Xu.

Dr. Xu was intently applying pressure to the wounded soldier, his forehead glistening with fine beads of sweat. Jiang Yutang stood by, holding her breath, sometimes helping to hold the soldier's shoulders to stabilize his body, sometimes handing him clean gauze, their cooperation was very tacit.

Jiang Yutang was eager to finish her work so she could go find Jiang Huaiyu to ask about her recent situation, so as not to worry her family.
