Chapter 114 The Riddler (Part 10)

White, an agent who joined the League at the same time as Erenshere, has an unfortunate appearance.
With an unfortunate nose, an unfortunate mouth, and unfortunate eyes, White would receive an equal amount of sarcasm whenever his colleagues mentioned what tasks Erenshere had accomplished.
Now that Ellen Sher is dead, White feels he can do it again.
The news spread quickly through the fortress, and people two streets away were talking about the guy whose brain had been eaten.
"But then again, even though we found Irencel's body, it also proves that the fortress is not safe. Have you heard? We keep hearing ghostly voices near the obelisk lately. I'm wondering if it's related to the head-eating monsters."
A guy with a small mouth and thick eyebrows was talking to another fat and strong orc.
White and four agents happened to be passing by.
When Billis heard the word "obelisk," he quickly associated it with what he had seen in Hyperion.
"What was that obelisk that person was talking about?"
"The Leberio Obelisk, the highest council of the Heroes' Alliance, where the high-ranking members hold meetings."
"Can you take us to see it?"
Although he was granted greater investigative authority, White felt that as long as Ryan wasn't around, he should be in charge of where to conduct the investigation.
"The obelisk is only open when something important happens; it's usually locked."
"Can't I even take a look?"
“Weren’t you going to investigate the files of the other nine high-ranking members? Rein sent me with you because he was afraid you would trespass. Don’t forget what happened in the courtyard last time.”
The streetlights hanging on the ring road lit up, actually all of them, except for the ones leading to the archives building, which were only open two days a week.
The entire archive building has only one floor, but it is as big as an exhibition hall. The space is dimly lit and very oppressive. Every file and every piece of material lies lazily in the drawer, some of which have been lying there for ten years.
All employee files at the barrier are publicly accessible, except for a few files, including those of high-ranking employees, which are locked in well-sealed cabinets with combination locks.
Irenshere would deliver the secret document to one of the high-ranking officials, someone with whom he would have a close relationship.
White skillfully pulled out the thinnest file from the nine files, believing it to be the one the agent was looking for.
"There are only two women in the entire high seat, and this is one of them, Luna. She's petite, likes to read people's expressions, and has some dealings with Irencel."
Judging from the photos, Luna is a semi-reincarnated being with long, thin limbs and a flat chest. Her eyelashes, however, resemble long, narrow, and distant landmasses; you get used to them after looking at them a few times.
It was common knowledge that Irenshere had relationships with many women during his lifetime, and even Mia had a brief affair with him.
Luna's file box contains four photos of her life: one of an island, one of a desert, and one of a forest, all of which show her dressed very attractively.
In the island photo, she sits between an old man and another woman, most of her body covered, with only her head peeking out, looking like a mischievous child.
Another document contains detailed family background information; the older man is the father, and the woman is the older sister.
"When did she become a secret agent?" Lisa asked curiously.
White replied, "Yes, I was chosen."
"By whom?"
"The founder of the alliance, the first batch of agents, including myself and Irenshere, were all chosen by him."
"I want to see the founder's information."
"The founder is the only one without any file. Apart from high-ranking agents, ordinary agents have never even seen him. We were chosen through a spokesperson, but that spokesperson is no longer here."
"What does the spokesperson look like?"
"It's hard to describe. It was glowing all over, like a god descending from heaven. You couldn't even open your eyes. Nobody knew what it looked like."
"Was it the founder who bestowed these high-ranking positions with these responsibilities?"
"The senior staff shares responsibilities with the founder. We usually address the founder as 'Your Excellency.' Only SSS-level tasks require Your Excellency's approval; for other tasks, the senior staff can approve them."
"The founder wasn't a reincarnated being?"
"Nobody knows, just like his appearance, it's a mystery."
The information on high-ranking officials, judging from their photos, all share a clear characteristic: a significant change from humility and caution to arrogance and disdain. This is especially true in the archives photos from the past year, where a certain conceited attitude overwhelms everything.
The highest council has the highest judicial authority in the alliance. The high seats were originally to be adjusted every three years, with those agents who had outstanding mission results competing for the positions. However, since last year, this adjustment system seems to have been interrupted.
The reason given by the high-ranking officials is that no suitable replacement has yet emerged.
White explained that Irenshere was one of the candidates, but he withdrew during the meeting. At that time, the intelligence department theft happened, so Lord Rein quickly connected the two events and found out that Irenshere was the real thief.
White also said that thanks to Lord Raine, no serious damage was caused.
Lisa thought of something else that was easily overlooked: another secret document mentioned that there used to be twelve people in the high seats, but two of them went missing. Richie was involved in the investigation and later discovered that their heads had been eaten.
To prevent White from knowing that they had seen the contents of the secret document, Lisa deliberately asked, "But I heard in my previous investigation that there were originally twelve people in the high seats, and two people stepped down from their positions. Is there a reason for that?"
"Oh, you mean those two people? They're old and retired."
Are there any relevant files?
"I'm sorry, they left the Alliance a long time ago, and the archives only contain materials related to the Alliance."
What White said was completely different from the contents of the secret document! Those two people might be the key.
The agents then asked White for information on Irensie.
Irenshere's file was full of photos, which almost immediately identified him as a vain guy, and every photo was a group photo with friends.
The photos show that he knows people all over the city, and in terms of proportion, women make up the majority.
One of the photos is a picture of him and Mia, with the two of them holding bottles of liquor, arms around each other, looking very intimate.
The person involved was right there, but Mia quickly denied it, saying she was drunk that night and didn't remember anything.
Lisa discovered another suspicious point: among the many photos of him with friends, there was none of Richie's, even though in the previous investigation of Richie, everyone said that he and Irensie were friends.
Should we ask Richie himself? But where is he hiding right now? And there's that troublesome guy White following him around.
"Show me Richie's file again."
"It's 10:30, let's talk about it tomorrow."
"No, I want it now."
Richie's file box contained no photos, not even normal work photos, only a few simple forms and test scores. His physical test scores were the opposite of Irenshere's, not very good, but his written test scores were excellent, so he was assigned to the intelligence group.
Richie's file box is different from others; it is lighter at the top and heavier at the bottom. Only careful observers will notice that there is a thumb-sized double-layered gap at the bottom, which can be used to stuff things inside.
Sure enough, Lisa pulled out a small crumpled piece of paper from inside.
White saw Lisa clutching something in her hand, looking rather furtive, and asked, "What did you find?"
"A crumpled piece of paper, possibly an archive cover that was accidentally torn off."
Just like last time when he was digging for treasure under the big tree, White eagerly stretched out his hand and gestured with his fingers: "Give it to me."
What if White discovers that Richie is still alive?
The paper ball was neatly folded, indicating it wasn't torn from somewhere.
So Lisa spoke up first, saying, "Let me see first."
The crumpled paper had only one name written on it: Waldo.
White saw the name too, and his face instantly turned grim.
"Who is this?" Lisa asked.
"They are retired high-ranking members."
Lisa seized the opportunity and said, "We'll go to his house to investigate tomorrow."
"Let's investigate somewhere else."
"Waldo retired, but his house wasn't demolished, was it?"
“He left the league two years ago and has absolutely nothing to do with this case.”
"Can you guarantee there's no connection? Irenshere said he's handed the remaining classified documents over to a high-ranking official, but he didn't say it was the current one."
Now it was White's turn to be mute.
