Chapter 113 The Riddler (Part 9)

Ryan pushed his cigarette far away, and when he caught sight of the ashtray, the music stopped. He then casually tossed the cigarette butt into it.
'We can't delay any longer; we must find Irenshere as soon as possible,' a voice whispered in my head.
Raine stood up, ready to go out for a walk, but as soon as he reached the door, as if he had drunk too much, his steps became uncontrollable, he lay down on the sofa, and then sat back down.
'Damn it! These are my feet, you'd better leave me alone!'
'Aren't we in this together? By the way, all your troublesome work was handled by my subordinates. Who do you think you owe your glamorous life to?'
"Don't let my thoughts pop into your head every time something happens. If you're so capable, come find me directly."
"Looking for you? Then open the door, I'm right there."
Raine suddenly widened his pupils and ran over quickly. He ran so fast that it was as if he had crossed two streets in the blink of an eye.
The door opened, and White was standing outside.
Both men were terrified of each other, but Ryan was probably more frightened than White. His head throbbed, and he was trembling with anxiety, tension, and prolonged smoking.
White was almost hit, but luckily he dodged quickly; it was only a centimeter away.
"How is it you?" Hot air billowed from Renn's crocodile nostrils.
White was usually quiet, and after being scolded by Ryan, he became even quieter.
"I was just about to knock on the door..."
"That's not what I meant. Who sent you here?"
"I came by myself because I have something important to discuss."
Ryan glanced outside mysteriously to make sure no one else was there, then grabbed White, threw him inside, and closed the door.
"Speak quickly, don't wait until I lose patience."
"You'll love to hear this, sir! Irenshere's body has been found!"
Raine's agitation vanished instantly, and he feigned composure as he laughed heartily. After a strange spasm in his throat, he still didn't intend to stop.
After swatting the fly that had landed on him, he quickly lit a cigarette, inhaling until he was breathless, muffled sounds coming from his nostrils.
White had never seen such a horrible Ryan, as if he had contracted some incurable disease.
I was filled with sorrow, restless and anxious, hating myself and everyone here.
Ryan stubbed out his cigarette, grinding his serrated teeth, and said, "Where? Take me there now, right away!"
The two people sped through the loop, arriving at the scene before the reflections of the buildings on the horizon intersected.
The four agents had already dismantled the charging device and broken the illusion, revealing a house with a chimney.
Ryan couldn't wait to go inside.
Upon entering, I saw a pair of shoes, looking like dirty radishes, one left on the left and the other kicked to the right.
The house was supported by several pine stakes. In the middle was a long table with six candles on it, all of which had burned out. Next to it was a whole set of tableware, all of which were empty plates.
Under the table was an old tin can, half-filled with dirt, half of which looked like it had been gnawed on by something.
To the left of the long table is a stand-in workbench, on which lies a corpse with only half a head.
There were three people standing on each side of the large closet at the back, and Elsa couldn't squeeze in, so she had to sit inside the empty closet.
After carefully examining the body, Ryan determined that the figure matched that of Irensie, but since he couldn't see the face clearly, he couldn't draw a conclusion.
"Is this Irenshere?" Renn asked.
Lisa nodded: "He was already dead when we found the house."
"How did he die?"
Something ate his head.
Renn felt as if he had been electrocuted. He had seen this kind of death several times, but he never expected it to happen to Irenshere.
"The high-ranking officials need evidence to prove that the deceased was Irenscher."
"The evidence is in the safe on the second floor; we found the stolen confidential documents."
Ryan suddenly turned around, without saying anything about taking me to see it, and ran upstairs by himself.
The second floor is a very frugal bedroom, containing an empty milk bottle, half a small round bread, three or four newspapers, and a third-rate magazine that exposes the interior.
The safe Lisa mentioned must be the treasure chest in the middle. This chest has a combination lock, just like a pirate chest.
The lock was half-open, and inside were more than a dozen identical treasure chests, each smaller than the last.
The final treasure chest contained a large envelope and a small envelope, and Ryan immediately took a liking to the large envelope, which indeed contained the stolen documents.
The file had been opened; it contained only a short threatening letter that read:
'The Sky City project is also a mistake. If your government insists on continuing, then accept the judgment of anger.'
There is no signature at the bottom.
Ryan searched the treasure chest for a long time but couldn't find the second document. Only then did he turn his attention to the small envelope.
Raine trembled all over, his expression panicked as if he were witnessing the resurrection of the dead. In all the years he had known Irenshere, he had never been so nervous.
A letter slipped out of the envelope, and it read:
"By the time you see this letter, I'll be dead. You can't pry open a dead man's mouth, right? Okay, buddy, stop looking so gloomy. I killed Richie, and now I'm dead too. It's karma. The other secret document is in the hands of someone in a high position. You're probably wondering why I'm telling you this. Well, the game's over. I'm tired of it. If you think those investigators are capable, have them give you one last push."
In a fit of rage, Ryan tore the letter to shreds.
'He hit the nail on the head. I never imagined the dead man would outsmart you. My good buddy, that guy had a lot going on in his head.'
'Did you eat his brain?'
"I'm not going to lie to you. It definitely wasn't me, but I can't guarantee it wasn't one of my subordinates."
'Would you be unhappy if I asked you to get less involved in this?'
'I'll be furious. They'll find me, and then both of us will be finished.'
'I thought you were some kind of amazing person.'
"Friend, I've just awakened and need time to recover. Money, fame, promotion—I can get you all of that. What more could you want?"
There's one seat above the top row; I'd like to sit there.
"I have to remind you of two things. Do you know why I don't occupy your mind? Because I find it quite interesting to talk in your head with someone who shares the same ideals. But desires need a limit. You reincarnated beings think you know much about this other world? Just the tip of the iceberg. You'd better do as I say before I actually devour your brain."
Ryan patted his head, and the contents inside his head wobbled as if they were too heavy to function.
White followed the agent upstairs and saw the scraps of paper on the floor. He asked, "Sir, what's this?"
Renn seemed to have been seriously ill, and his voice wasn't as loud anymore.
“Irenshere is dead, but the case is not closed. The letter says that another confidential document is in the hands of a high-ranking person. I’m granting you access to retrieve it. Oh, and by the way, White must be involved in the entire investigation. You must not peek at the other confidential document, understand?”
