Chapter 8 Half a Tombstone Flies From the Sky
Reading Settings
The train travels beneath the clouds, and the river is a pale milky white, very calm.
The path beside the railway tracks was less than a few inches wide, with trees peeking out from the woods, their leaves crowding the fast-moving train windows, and the sunlight shining in low, looking at first glance like flickering torches.
Billy had just woken up after a nap in his seat.
Several waiters pushing food carts politely asked, "Sir, madam, what would you like to order?"
Billis was about to ask the lady if she wanted anything, but when he pushed her away, he found the seat next to him was empty.
Where did she go?
Mia sat opposite her, her cheeks reflecting a purplish-blue hue from the glass. She was wearing the same clothes as the night before: a thin leather jacket, sunglasses, a watch, white stockings, and high heels.
To Billy, this combination was a bit too avant-garde, making it obvious at a glance that he was a secret agent.
Perhaps she herself doesn't care at all.
“Hey, where is my wife?” Billis asked her.
Mia took off her sunglasses and replied, "They were just here. Maybe they went to the restroom."
It was then that Billis noticed a grayish-white patch on Mia's arm. It was too dark to see clearly yesterday, but the color had seeped into her skin, like light shining from a distant star.
"Are you learning magic?" Billis asked curiously.
Mia lowered her head slightly, surprised by Biris's slowness.
"I only know some basic magic, such as Holy Light."
"Who taught you? That earth elementalist from yesterday?"
"Want to learn? I can teach you."
"No, I'm still more used to using weapons."
Billy smiled at her, expecting Mia to smile back, but Mia simply put her sunglasses back on with a serious expression and leaned back against the leather seat.
The announcement of the station came from the loudspeaker.
"The dairy market is approaching. Passengers getting off, please prepare to disembark."
The car door opened, and many short goblins got on. Each goblin carried a bulging package containing shovels, wrenches, and equipment.
The four goblins only occupy two normal seats, so their tickets are cheaper than those for regular passengers.
Billy looked at the goblins and then thought of Thompson's undead friends.
Perhaps that undead friend never even had the chance to ride the train.
Just then, a piece of Bach's piano music came from the last carriage.
As if summoned by his wife, Billis moved from the swaying first carriage to the last.
As expected, it was the lady.
Lisa sat in a rectangular leather chair, her fingers frantically tapping the keys. She stopped playing, probably sensing someone approaching.
Billies clapped his hands, walked over, placed one hand on the back of the lady's hand, put the other arm around her waist, and chuckled.
Why did you stop playing?
"You didn't play it well enough."
“If anyone dares to say you play badly, I’ll throw him off the train.”
Lisa bumped her forehead against Billy's, and their eyes sparkled like mica.
The train suddenly braked hard, and everything in the carriages overturned.
Lisa threw herself at Billy, and Billy hugged his wife tightly.
The train seemed to have just hit something, and everyone was peering out the windows.
"Damn it! There's no mountain here, so why are there huge rocks?"
Upon closer inspection, everyone realized that it wasn't a stone at all, but rather half a tombstone.
Half a tombstone flew in from the sky! It was stuck straight into the railway track, and it was an obsidian tombstone.
The passengers all got off the train, and two strong orcs volunteered to move the tombstones. However, the locomotive was damaged, and it would take several dwarven technicians half a day to repair it.
To others it was a natural disaster or a man-made calamity, but only Billy and his group knew the origin of the obsidian tombstone.
It must be related to the grave of Thompson's old friend.
According to Mia, the cemetery is about 20 kilometers away, and the fact that a tombstone could be brought here from 20 kilometers away shows that it is an extraordinary force.
Without waiting for the train to be repaired, the group decided to walk.
Along the way, they passed an abandoned mine, crossed a stream flowing from Wa Harbour, bypassed an ugly town, and finally plunged into a valley nestled between mountains and water.
The cemetery is located in the middle of the valley.
This valley is called Black Narrow Valley, and it includes three ponds, a stream, a grove of trees, and a pasture.
Thanks to abundant rainfall and the soil, all the plants are thriving, turtles and soft-shelled turtles crawl slowly, and waterfalls cascade down the mountain, creating a splashing water effect that makes first-time visitors feel as if they have entered the Garden of Eden.
What a beautiful place.
If it weren't a cemetery, this place might be a tourist destination.
Led by Mia, the Billies soon arrived at the cemetery.
Perhaps it was fear, perhaps it was tension, perhaps it was the discovery of something lurking in the shadows—a jarring sense of dread began from there, and the turning point occurred.
If what you just entered was the Garden of Eden, the graveyard that appears before you is nothing short of a battlefield.
The tombstones lay overturned and scattered, and the ground was littered with rotting animal bones and maggots. Several things that were intertwined were swaying in the wind.
“Those animals were sacrifices used in some kind of ritual. Since no one has come to clean this place for a long time, they inevitably became unclean.”
A long, drawn-out voice sounded from behind.
"You call this unclean?"
When Billy turned around, he saw a man covered in mangled flesh standing in the shadow of the tombstone.
The guy's feet were covered in black mud, his legs were crawling with insects, his face was almost fleshless, and his dry, smelly, iron-gray hair hung down over his face. He would bare his teeth and grimac when he spoke.
"Did Thompson send you here? My name is Drewwater, an old friend of Thompson's."
Mia saw Drewot, and the two gave each other a token hug.
This horrific scene was somehow comforting; Billy, seeing it, felt nauseous from the sheer horror.
Drewwater led them into a dilapidated house, which was probably the tomb of some rich man, but it was built to look like a house.
The house also has stained glass windows and several rooms inside, each used for offerings. The last room has a large stone candlestick with a statue behind it.
Biris guessed that the statue should belong to the Faan from eight years ago, rather than the current reincarnated Faan.
Mold on the damp wall had completely obscured the statue. Drewor pulled up a lever next to it, and the statue moved, revealing a winding staircase.
The stairs led down into a chilling abyss, where a stench of decay assaulted the senses.
Billys seemed very brave, insisting on walking ahead of the two ladies. As he took his first step, a scream from the abyss nearly scared him out of his wits.
"Mr. Drewwater, what was that sound just now?"
Someone has passed away.
"Can the undead also die?"
"Don't say that only you will die. Many vampires starve to death because they refuse to drink blood."
"Perhaps we could try drinking animal blood."
"The provisional government once provided special poultry and livestock for vampires, like the ones you just saw, but for some reason, they stopped providing them later."
"Because transportation isn't very convenient?"
“I don’t think so, sir. The major reboot eight years ago made us the most unpopular people in the world, and unpopular people should perish.”
"How can you say that? Drewault, we should think like Earthlings, not like Fa'an people. Eight years ago, we were all one family."
Although Drewwater's eyes were empty, they seemed to be filled with tears.
"Is that what you think? But many people don't think that way. They believe that things that are beautiful on the outside are good, and things that are evil on the outside should be eliminated."
"Who would think that? That's a regression in thinking!"
“I’m almost seventy years old. According to Earth’s age, I’ll soon be in my grave. But here, I live in a grave every day and don’t feel the passage of time. As time goes by, our idea of immortality will also become nothingness. If I have the chance, I’d like to try the beauty of death.”
"Stay strong, old man, I'll take care of those troublemakers."
When Billies accidentally touched Drewert's shoulder, he suddenly realized that it wasn't as bad as he had imagined.
Drewault appears to be a melancholy reincarnated being. Is it because the reincarnation into immortality has traumatized him, or because the recent threats have filled him with anxiety about life?
When he entered the icy pit, he learned that there were several other undead like Drewot.
These people were all so ugly they were ashamed to be alive. There was even a child among them who, though his expression was unreadable, seemed very happy.
"Dad! Mom! We have guests at home!"
Billy's heart clenched.
The little boy stared wide-eyed at the guest, though his eyes were already large and intimidating.
