Chapter 7 New Mission
Reading Settings
Just like the painting on the wall, Thompson is a half-reincarnated person who is close to sixty years old. However, today he is wearing an old-fashioned military uniform with the fashionable collar and cuffs of the other world of Fa'an. He looks very proper and dignified.
Thompson sat in an electronic wheelchair with a directional joystick and could also call for servants via a screen.
But he still chose to let Mia push the wheelchair.
“I’ve been watching you two for a long time,” Thompson said. “I’ve interviewed several agents before, but none of them passed. They either relied too much on their appearance or lacked understanding of the otherworld of Fa’an. Only you two, Mr. and Mrs. Billies, have caught my eye. A demon and a half-reincarnated person living together. So I’ve decided to use this ball to test you. If there’s anything I do wrong, please forgive me.”
Billis took off his top hat first and saluted the old soldier in the wheelchair.
Thompson continued, "Because it's related to the mission ahead, I desperately need two agents who can ignore appearances and discover the inner workings of the character."
"What mission?" Billis asked curiously.
“An old friend of mine was reborn as an undead eight years ago after the Great Reboot. The sunlight separated us, and we can only meet at night or online. Recently, he received an anonymous threatening letter that said he had to move out of the cemetery within seven days or face the consequences.”
"cemetery?"
"Yes, my friend can only live in the shadows; moving away is tantamount to a death sentence."
"Who made such an outrageous request?"
"Although it was a threatening letter, it was definitely not done by the interim government of Fa'an. It was more likely done by some nearby residents who were afraid of the dark."
What kind of threats did he receive?
"The earth shook violently, sir. Several tombs collapsed, and even the other undead living below were affected."
"Is it a type of PVC explosive specifically designed for demolishing buildings?"
"I don't know about that. Let me show you the threatening letter my friend sent."
The group returned to the main house and came to a study surrounded by walnut-colored walls.
Beautiful handicrafts and artifacts unearthed in Fa'an are displayed on the shelves. Several colorful magic orbs are particularly eye-catching, and a huge elemental body whose shape can change at any time is placed on the bookshelf in the center.
A large photograph also hung on the wall, its colors unusually dark.
The one on the left is barely recognizable as Thompson himself, while the one standing on the right should be his old friend.
Because he was an undead, the camera's flash was turned off, and combined with the nighttime shooting effect, all that could be seen was that he was a tall and thin guy with almost no flesh on his face and body.
Thompson took the threatening letter that had been sent from the drawer.
The letter had been opened, and there was still a faint smell of death at the seal.
Thompson took out the letter and showed it to the Billies.
The letter, written in a very harsh tone, stated that his friend must get out of the cemetery within seven days, or the consequences would be dire.
Then look at the signature on the back—"The Great Demon King".
This is clearly not a real demon king; it's just using this frightening name to drive the undead away from the graveyard.
As for what methods are used to intimidate, we'll have to go to the scene to find out.
Thompson said, "I'm hiring the two of you to help my friend find the culprit and stop him."
Billy took the threatening letter and said, "Leave this to us, but where are you going to find your friends?"
Thompson pointed at Mia and said, “Let my daughter take you there. She lives in the north, near the Black Mountain territory. It takes a whole day on the cogwheel train.”
Mia glanced at Billis unintentionally. She radiated light like a work of art in the room, capable of making men weak in the knees and lose their minds.
This is a kind of beauty completely different from Lisa's.
Just because Billy glanced at her a few more times, Lisa gave him another hard tug on the ear.
Lisa, who never leaves the house, only found out today that her seemingly honest and loving husband was actually so unfaithful outside!
After leaving the room, Thompson instructed his daughter to make sure the guests were settled in.
The Billies slept in a room on the top floor of the main building, from which they could see their town.
The town's streetlights were on, and several harpies flew around in the sky, probably trying to seduce men. It was a rare and enchanting night.
Although Billis was looking at the town, he was thinking about something else.
"Biris, what are you thinking about? Aren't you going to sleep?" Lisa asked gently.
Billis, resting his chin on his hand, said, "I was just thinking, what if the things inside the cocoon hatch while I'm away?"
"Ha, so you were thinking about the child."
"Hey, who do you think I'm thinking about, that elf? Give me a break."
Lisa threw the pillow at him, hitting Billis hard in the face.
Billy paused, unsure of what he had said wrong.
The couple suddenly fell silent.
After Lisa fell asleep, Billis quietly went downstairs and lit his pipe outdoors.
Just as I took a small bite, the door quietly opened, and a slender figure darted past, disappearing into the grove of trees ahead.
The speed was so fast that Billy choked on his cigarette a few times.
However, his eyes were as sharp as Lisa's; the shadow he had just seen was Mia.
Where is she going?
Billis followed.
In the grove stood a newly built little house, somewhat like a small church on Earth. Two large floor-to-ceiling windows were carved with pure white angels, who were high above, dealing with the demons below. This was very similar to mythology on Earth.
Beris approached the chapel quietly, without making a sound.
There were two voices inside, one was Mia's, and the other was a man's.
Billis breathed out onto the window and traced a circle with his finger, discovering that the man was a half-reincarnated being using an earth elemental substitute.
As for what they were saying, they spoke very softly, but it was still possible to hear a little bit.
Mia's general idea was that they needed to observe for a while longer and couldn't draw any conclusions immediately.
The earth element signifies a great need for manpower, as the task is both demanding and urgent.
These two people seem to be evaluating something, and judging from their tone of voice, they must have known each other for a long time.
When the earth element speaks, it is straight; when it leaves, it is flat, like a lump of mud.
Billis wanted to look around some more, but Mia suddenly jumped up, climbed onto the chandelier, and pulled a pistol from her white stockings.
Her eyes were as steady and clear as any elf, young or old, and her pointed ears would perk up shrewdly at the slightest sound.
Just as Billy was about to leave, Mia jumped through the window onto his back and pointed a gun at his head.
"What did you hear?!"
Billis pretended to raise his hand.
"I heard a little bit, but it's like I didn't hear anything at all. You were speaking too softly."
"I can make sure you can never go back."
"Oh, don't do that, Madam is still shirtless and waiting for me to go back."
Mia blushed, and taking advantage of the opportunity, Billy snatched the other woman's pistol, grabbed her wrist, and intended to use an evening dance pose to knock her down.
Unexpectedly, a slap landed on her chin. Mia countered with a backhand throw, taking down Billis and returning the pistol to her hand.
Mia used her long legs to press the other person's handprint into the grass, wrapped her wrists around her chest, and twisted them sharply.
Billy pretended to be in pain, twisting and turning.
"Hey! Your father just paid the deposit, and you want to kill me? That's too cruel."
Mia loosened her grip slightly.
Just then, Billy grabbed Mia by the middle of her body, quickly rolled over, went behind her, wrapped Mia's hands around his neck, and snatched the pistol.
"Hey, compared to my wife's skills, you're still a bit lacking."
Just as Billy was feeling smug, Mia stepped on him with her high heels and swept her leg, knocking Billy down again.
Now, Billis had nothing to say and had no choice but to surrender obediently.
But Mia didn't want to continue arguing with him, so she put the pistol back into her stockings.
Billis seemed to have seen something while lying on the ground, which angered Mia so much that she stomped on him again with her high heels.
As a result, Biris barely managed to win one round, while Mia won three.
Billy stared at Mia for a moment, then asked, "Are you a secret agent?"
Mia didn't want to say it, but her actions just now were tantamount to admitting it.
"Your father doesn't know you're a secret agent, does he?"
"Don't meddle in other people's business."
"Ah, we're all special agents, there's nothing to hide, but I feel like you've received special training."
"I'm self-taught, okay?"
Who was that puppet stand-in just now?
Mia handed a hand to Billis and said, "I'll consider whether to tell you after I've finished Father's task."
