When Zhang Sumei returned home and found her daughter missing, she didn't think much of it. After all, her daughter hadn't been staying home properly these past few days. In order to marry her off before she was on guard, she didn't show any unusual behavior.

They didn't come back for lunch, and they didn't look for anyone. It wasn't until evening that Sister-in-law Qu realized something was wrong. She was about to get her clothes to take a shower when she found signs that her wardrobe had been tampered with.

The thought that she had kept most of her assets in there made her quickly call her husband in. The eldest brother of the Qu family thought something had happened to her, but when he came in, he saw his wife's hands trembling as she rummaged through the wardrobe.

"What's wrong, honey? Are you feeling unwell? Should we go to the hospital to get checked out?" Brother Qu was a little nervous, thinking that his wife was newly pregnant and might be feeling unwell.

"Quick, Dapeng, open the hidden compartment and check! I found my clothes have been tampered with." This contains most of her life savings; she can't let anyone steal it, or she'll be devastated. She finally managed to get these things from her mother-in-law, and she can't just let them go like this.

The small yellow fish and jewelry were things that couldn't be seen in the light of day. Apart from her man, no one else knew about them. Who would come and rummage through her wardrobe?

The eldest brother of the Qu family rummaged through the boxes and found that both boxes were there. He breathed a sigh of relief and took out the first box. He weighed it and found that something was wrong. He then reached for the second box. The weight of this one was even more wrong. He knew that the whole box was full of small yellow croakers and it was impossible for it to weigh only a little bit.

With trembling hands, Sister Qu opened the box, then suddenly screamed and fainted.

All of her gold jewelry with small yellow croakers was gone, and even the money notes that her husband had exchanged for the small yellow croakers a few days ago were gone.

Brother Qu was startled and quickly called his mother. Zhang Sumei was also attracted by the box lying on the bed, but she was still startled when she saw her daughter-in-law faint. She quickly went over and pinched her philtrum.

She knew about the things she gave to her son and daughter-in-law, and she also knew that her son used small yellow croakers to exchange for money. But why is everything gone now?

"Mom, where is Qu Qingqing? Did she go into my room today and take all my money? Does she not want your grandson to live? You can't side with her anymore." Qu's wife was smart. She knew that her mother-in-law was only strong on the outside but weak on the inside. She looked tough, but she was rich before, so her preference for sons wasn't very obvious. Now that it had come out, her preference for sons was particularly serious.

Judging from her unwavering agreement to let Qu Qingqing marry that widower, you can tell that she is also a cold-hearted person. Now that her husband has run away, she can only rely on her son from now on, so of course she has to speak on behalf of her son and daughter-in-law.

Upon hearing what her daughter-in-law said, Zhang Sumei glanced at the two somewhat empty boxes, suddenly remembered something, and ran towards her room.

After running back to her room, she started rummaging through her clothes. After searching for a while, she discovered that the clothes she had specially made to store her things were gone.

There were still things hidden in those clothes of hers, some of the money and tickets she had exchanged when she went back to Pingcheng with her daughter. She thought that if she hid them in those clothes, no one would go through those few pieces of clothing that only she could wear.

Fortunately, she still knew that she shouldn't put all her eggs in one basket. She divided the money she earned into four parts: one part was put in her clothes, one part was in a hidden compartment in her wardrobe, and the other part was deposited in the bank. She wrapped the passbook in two sheets of oil paper and buried it in a hole dug in the corner of the wall.

The other dowry was originally intended for her daughter, after all, she was the daughter she had spoiled and raised, and she would never let her just pack two tattered clothes and get married.

"Mom, were your things taken too? Should we call the police?" Brother Qu looked at his mother's distraught appearance and thought that her belongings had also been confiscated.

“We can’t report it to the police, son, we can’t report it to the police. She’s your own sister. I don’t know where she ran off to. Let’s just pretend she’s dead. Here, take what we have left to comfort your wife. From now on, let’s pretend she never existed. There’s a huge commotion outside right now. We can’t report it to the police because of our past identities.” Zhang Sumei held her son’s hand, worried that her daughter would be brought back, but even more worried that their identities would be discovered.

She has witnessed firsthand how cruel those outsiders are to the wealthy people of the past, and she cannot allow her son and grandson to be labeled as capitalist bastards.

Brother Qu suddenly realized why his mother didn't want him to call the police; it was mainly because their identities couldn't stand up to scrutiny.

Thinking of this, Brother Qu could only nod helplessly. Just thinking about the shocking scene outside made him shudder. If his unborn child had to go through that, he would hate himself for it.

"I understand, Mom. I'll make sure my wife is happy." Brother Qu took the bag his mother had given him and went back to his room.

Seeing the look in Brother Qu's eyes, Sister-in-law Qu knew what was going on. She was still very angry and wanted to call the police, but after her husband analyzed the situation, she was terrified.

Looking at the things her man brought over, she could only grit her teeth and accept them, vowing fiercely in her heart that if Qu Qingqing didn't appear again, she would let it go, but if she ever met Qu Qingqing again, she would make her pay double.

"I'm sorry, wife. I knew she was restless, but I didn't know she was this restless. From now on, let's pretend she's not in our family anymore. Don't be angry, don't ruin your health, it's not worth it," Brother Qu said, stuffing the things he had brought into his wife's hands as he comforted her.

Qu Qingqing had already run back to Pingcheng. She bought a bag made of homespun cloth from a villager she passed by, which was just right to put those few pieces of clothing in. She knew that carrying so many things on her might slow her down if she really went into the water, so she bought a few of the floating bags made of sheepskin from the villagers along the way. She didn't dare to buy too many, mainly because she was afraid that others would steal them.

Things made of sheepskin like this can be easily attached by simply blowing air into them and then tying them to your legs and hands so they won't sink.

The train journey takes two days and one night to travel from Pingcheng to Pengcheng. By then, the time for transporting supplies has passed, and train tickets are relatively easy to buy, although they are quite expensive.

After several days of travel, they finally arrived at the seaside of the fishing village, where He Caiwei saw Qu Qingqing looking disheveled.

Actually, she just looked rather disheveled, which was intentional on her part, in order to protect her belongings. The more tattered they were, the less likely anyone would want to steal them.

After arriving at the seaside, she would blow up a sheepskin bag every day and put a small roll of banknotes, about ten or so yuan, into it.
