Director Zhang genuinely felt sorry for Lu Zheng. From childhood to adulthood, apart from his older brother and sister-in-law, no one cared about him. Having a father was like not having one. It's a fact that people say that if you have a stepmother, you'll have a stepfather.

Just like this time, Lu Zheng's fate was already uncertain, and his father, that traitorous son, was put down by the old woman's two drops of cat urine.

Brother Lu and Sister-in-law Lu were so angry that they almost severed ties with the old man, but without finding Old Lu, they dared not make any rash moves.

He had just made a phone call and heard Brother Lu's choked voice. Upon hearing that Old Lu was still alive, and hearing Brother Lu's joyful tone, Director Zhang felt very fortunate that Old Lu still had this older brother.

As he was talking, he thought of Lao Lu's leg, which would be like this from now on, and his heart ached. Such an outstanding person was ruined just because of those two words from that beast.

But that unreasonable old man let the culprit go so easily, making even an outsider like him feel indignant for Old Lu.

“It’s okay, I know my situation. If I’m crippled, so be it. I don’t want to go back to Kyoto. I’ll get treatment here. Call my older brother again and have him transfer my household registration to Pengcheng as well. I don’t want to go back to Kyoto, and I don’t want to see that old man’s disgusting face.” Lu Zhiheng said through gritted teeth, the pain in his body making him unusually clear-headed.

Although he wanted nothing more than to shoot that brat, he was crippled and couldn't do anything now. He didn't want to go back to Kyoto and become a laughingstock for that family.

To their surprise, Brother Lu arrived early the next morning, accompanied by Sister-in-law Lu, Brother Lu's two sons and a daughter, as well as a renowned orthopedic surgeon from the Kyoto Military Hospital.

Brother Lu's name is Lu Zhining, and he is forty-two years old this year. His wife's name is Wu Meifang. They are from the same village and were classmates. They grew up together as childhood sweethearts and later joined the army together after getting married.

After his father went abroad to study, he stayed in Kyoto and abandoned his wife and son. He married another woman in Kyoto, and their son was only two months younger than Lu Zhiheng.

Their mother was weak after giving birth and died less than a year later, never seeing the unfaithful man return before her death.

Lu Zhiheng was raised by his older brother and sister-in-law from a young age. Lu Zhining and Wu Meifang raised this younger brother as their son. So when they first got married, they always thought they would wait until Lu Zhiheng was older before having children.

So much so that they are now in their forties, and their children are still young.

The eldest son, Lu Qingfeng, is only 15 years old this year; the second son, Lu Qingzhu, is 12 years old this year; and the youngest daughter, Lu Qingyue, is only 7 years old this year.

Brother Lu and Sister-in-law Lu are both in the military, and their children are studying at the military academy for children of military personnel, living in the military compound.

The old man repeatedly asked to move in with them, but Wu Meifang refused each time. What a joke! Why would they give the house they were allocated to that family?

Upon receiving the news that his brother-in-law was hospitalized, the family hurriedly packed their things and prepared to drive over, but the journey was simply too far.

Lu Zhining submitted a report requesting a plane and a doctor, since her younger brother was injured during an organization's mission. The report was quickly approved, and a military plane was dispatched to transport them.

Just as he was leaving the compound, the old man stopped him again, wanting him to plead with higher authorities to release his son. That was utterly delusional; he'd harmed his brother and expected them to overlook the matter and intercede—that was impossible.

The people in the compound had been watching this situation for a month and knew all the ins and outs, so when the old man tearfully accused his two sons of being unfilial at the door, no one paid them any attention.

Before leaving Kyoto, Brother Lu made a special phone call to publish a statement in Kyoto's most prestigious newspaper, announcing that he and his brother were severing ties with the old man.

This message caught the old man completely off guard. By the time he tried to find them, they were nowhere to be found. He had no idea where his eldest son had gone. He went to his grandson's school but couldn't find his grandson or granddaughter either. The whole family seemed to have vanished without a trace.

They went to the door to ask, but no one knew where the family had gone. Or perhaps no one was willing to talk to the old man, so even if someone knew where they had gone, no one would tell him.

When Lu Zhining saw her younger brother on the hospital bed, tears streamed down her face. The man on the bed had sunken cheeks, dark circles under his eyes, and a stubble beard. His hands were wrapped tightly and placed on the blanket. He looked nothing like his usual handsome and languid self.

Wu Meifang covered her mouth, afraid that she would cry out and wake her brother-in-law. The thought of her brother-in-law's body covered in wounds made her heart ache. This child had grown up with them since he was little, and they had doted on him like their own son.

It's only been a month since we last met, and he's been tortured beyond recognition.

Lu Qingyue couldn't recognize that this was her uncle, who was famous throughout the military compound for his handsome appearance.

The little girl burst into tears when she saw his hands.

The crying woke Lu Zhiheng up, and when he saw his older brother, tears streamed down his face uncontrollably.

"Ah Zheng, it's so good that you're still alive. Your big brother is here. Don't be afraid. No matter what you become in the future, your big brother will never abandon you." Lu Zhining walked over and wanted to reach out to touch his younger brother, but he was injured all over and couldn't touch him at all.

Yes, just being alive is enough. This has been Lu Zhining's simplest wish for the past month or so. No matter what happens, as long as you're alive, there's hope.

"Uncle, are you in pain? Dad brought a doctor over. The doctor will heal you. You have no idea how scared I was when you weren't here." Lu Qingyue came over too, but she didn't dare touch her uncle, afraid of touching his wound.

"Qingyue, be good. Uncle is fine. I'll be better soon. Don't cry. I'll introduce you to a friend later. You can play with her. She's a pretty girl." Lu Zhiheng was at a loss when he saw his little niece crying.

Looking at the little girl reminded her of another little girl, and she suddenly wanted to see the two little girls playing together.

"Is she my uncle's daughter?" Lu Qingyue assumed that the young lady her uncle was going to introduce was his daughter. This girl subconsciously forgot that her uncle was not married at all, and didn't even have a wife, let alone a daughter.

Wu Meifang, standing nearby, was amused by her daughter's words: "What are you saying, girl? Your uncle doesn't even have a wife, so where would he get a daughter who can be your sister? That's utter nonsense. Azheng, are you feeling any better? Your older brother picked up Dr. Wu from the military hospital, and he'll check your injury."

"Sister-in-law, thank you for your hard work. The doctor has set the bones in my hand. With proper care, it should recover. As for my kneecap and shinbone, I'll have to trouble Dr. Wu with those." Lu Zhiheng raised his hand and waved it in front of his brother and sister-in-law to show that his hand was fine.

Only he himself knows that, whether he's lying down or prone, his whole body aches.
