Chapter 46 The Scoundrel

When Lu Zhiheng saw the little girl follow him in, he blinked and then reached out to close the door, leaving a small crack. The two of them, one tall and one short, stood by the crack and looked at the gate of the courtyard outside.
The knocking was rather urgent. If it were the old man, he certainly wouldn't knock like that. The neighbors have been here for so long and have never encountered such a rude person. Knocking on the door like this during the New Year means there must be some grudge or resentment.
"Who is it? It's the New Year..."
"Routine check, please open the door."
"What routine inspection? I've never heard of such a thing. What kind of routine inspection is needed? Who are you? Honey, have you ever heard of anyone coming to do a routine inspection during the New Year?" He Yuping recognized the voice as that of a notorious hooligan on the street.
He Caiwei quickly reached out and grabbed Lu Zhiheng's sleeve to get him to reply.
Lu Zhiheng understood what she meant and quickly said, "No, I just got back. It's some kind of routine inspection so early in the morning. I'll go ask Dad later. He's lived here for several years, so he must know if there are any routine inspections. It's like they're going to tear the door down this early in the morning."
Lu Zhiheng's voice was deliberately rough and his tone was particularly strong. The people outside were stunned when they heard this voice. They had inquired and found that this family had only moved in not long ago. The woman in the family was very beautiful. They had been watching for a long time and had never seen any men other than the waiter and the old man here. Why was there a man's voice now?
When Lu Zhiheng heard the voice, he knew it wasn't one of the people who were tracking him. Nevertheless, he still peeled off the skin from the man's face, wiped his face, took off his coat, and then came out of the house.
He Caiwei was stunned by his actions. When she saw Lu Zhiheng's face clearly, she was even more stunned. Holy crap, he's so handsome.
No wonder her mother said that with hands like those, her face must be good-looking too. Indeed, she is good-looking; her mother has a good eye.
"Who is your wife?" Lu Zhiheng asked casually, leaving He Yuping and her daughter stunned.
"Oh, they said it's a routine check." He Yuping was taken aback by his question, but quickly came to her senses.
Lu Zhiheng reached out and opened the courtyard gate, finding three men dressed in black cloth who looked rather unreliable. His eyes turned cold: "Who are you? What do you want to check?"
"This...this...no, no, I'm sorry, I disturbed you, I disturbed you." By the time she finished speaking, she had already run several meters away.
Lu Zhiheng quickly closed the door, turned around and saw the mother and daughter staring in disbelief, and suddenly felt like laughing.
"What's with those expressions on your faces? Comrade He, you should try to avoid opening the door in the future if you encounter something like this. Judging from this, it seems that some hooligans in the neighborhood have their eyes on you two." Lu Zhiheng's expression turned serious at the end.
Based on what he had just seen, the men were indeed local thugs, and they probably came looking for them because it was just the mother and daughter.
“Mom, next time they come, we’ll beat them up and see if they dare to come again. It’s pretty blatant of them to come knocking on the door on the first day of the Lunar New Year,” He Caiwei said fiercely, clenching her little fists.
Seeing her fierce yet adorable appearance, Lu Zhiheng smiled, reached out and scooped her up, hoisted her onto his shoulder, and walked into the courtyard.
"Don't bother with those people. I'll have someone teach them a lesson later. The police chief here is my comrade-in-arms. I'll go and tell him to keep an eye on you and your daughter." Lu Zhiheng spoke sincerely. He was genuinely worried about the safety of the mother and daughter, after all, they had saved him twice.
It wouldn't be unreasonable to ask someone to take better care of these things if I did a small favor.
"Hey! Uncle, put me down." He Caiwei was a little bewildered by being carried like this. Just as she called out, there was another knock on the door, this time much gentler.
"Daughter, come open the door!" The old man was startled when he heard those hooligans knocking on his daughter's door. He quickly put on his coat and ran over without even buttoning it up.
He Yuping quickly turned around and opened the door. Seeing that her father's cotton-padded coat was only half-on, she quickly pulled him in and helped him put the coat on and button it up: "Dad, why did you run so fast without putting on your clothes properly? What if you get cold later? It's very cold outside now."
"Didn't I hear someone say that some thugs from the street came to cause you trouble? I was in such a hurry that I didn't even notice what happened to my clothes. Are you alright? Where's my little one? This... who are you? Get out of here right now! You dare to harass my daughter? You must be tired of living. Before I call the police, put my little one down right now." The old man was halfway through his sentence when he suddenly saw a tall man carrying his little one, and his eyes immediately changed.
He quickly pulled his daughter behind him, grabbed his pipe, and confronted the man.
"Uh, Dad, Dad, it's a misunderstanding, it's a misunderstanding. Let's go inside and talk, let's go inside and talk." He Yuping quickly stopped her father, reached out and pulled him into the house. Her father had been too loud, and this would attract the attention of the neighbors.
"What misunderstanding? Who is this person? What are you doing here on the first day of the Lunar New Year?" Old Man He stared intently at Lu Zhiheng, afraid that if he blinked, this guy might do something, or even hurt his little granddaughter.
As he turned around, he took a step forward and snatched his granddaughter back into his arms.
"Tell me what's going on here?" Old Man He looked at his daughter with some unfriendly eyes, thinking that this man was brought by his daughter.
“Dad, we rescued this comrade last night. You can’t know his identity yet. It was because of him that those people ran away in a panic. Alright, Dad, don’t worry about this. Have you eaten yet? I made meat porridge this morning. Sit down and relax for a bit. I’ll get you some bowls and chopsticks.” He Yuping took her daughter from her father’s arms and placed her on the table. The meat porridge she had just made was already on the table; all that was needed now was another set of bowls and chopsticks.
Old Man He looked at the man, then at his own daughter, and glared at him fiercely: "Don't you dare have any improper thoughts about my daughter, or I'll break your legs."
The old man was afraid that his daughter would once again entrust herself to the wrong person, so he wanted her to wait a little longer. His daughter would only be twenty-three after the New Year, and although she had a young girl by her side, she was not worried about getting married at all.
He's only been here a few months, and several people have already inquired about him, but he doesn't want his daughter to find someone new so soon, so he's turned them all down.
“Uncle, you’ve misunderstood. I’m a legitimate soldier. I was injured on a mission yesterday and hid in this courtyard to escape pursuers. That’s how Comrade He and her daughter were rescued. I have to leave soon, but before I leave, I’ll have someone take good care of Comrade He and her daughter. The head of the local police station is my comrade-in-arms. If you need anything, you can ask him for help. My surname is Lu. Just tell him Lu Zheng asked him to help, and he won’t refuse.” Lu Zhiheng’s courtesy name was Zheng, a name only a few people in Qingjing knew. This police chief was his sworn brother who had risked his life for him.
