Chapter 30 Baked Buns

"No, you just need to stay out of the fire. Do you have any steamed buns? If you'd like to try baking some, I can help you." The soldier sitting next to He Caiwei generously offered to bake some steamed buns for her.
"Yes, but I want to try baking them myself. Uncle, wait for me a moment." He Caiwei ran back to the mule cart. In the small basket inside the cart were a few steamed buns that they had placed outside to avoid attracting attention.
The aroma of their baked flatbreads was so enticing that she wanted to try it herself. However, she forgot that steamed buns made in those days didn't contain sugar, so they didn't taste as good as the milky-flavored steamed buns of today.
However, He Caiwei was happily grilling a steamed bun on two sticks.
He Yuping waited in the car for her daughter to return, but she couldn't. So she got off the car to look for her. As soon as she got off, she found that the little girl was getting along very well with a large group of soldiers.
"Ai, you're awake! I'm baking steamed buns. Do you want to try some? They smell so good, but I don't know how they taste." He Caiwei sensed He Yuping getting out of the car the moment she turned around and called out happily.
"You little rascal, you didn't even tell me you were coming out. I was so worried about you sitting in the car." He Yuping was genuinely worried, after all, there were still many refugees in this desolate wilderness.
It's perfectly normal for homeless people to steal children and other things.
"Dad, I saw you were resting so I didn't disturb you. Anyway, I'm just strolling around here and won't go far." He Caiwei didn't think it was that dangerous outside, after all, there were so many soldiers around.
"Youyou, He Youyou," Lin Pingan called out twice, somewhat uncertainly.
"Brother Ping An, what are you doing here?" The sky was gradually brightening, and the facial features of the people outside could be clearly seen.
Lin Ping'an had known since childhood that his younger sister would tinker with strange things on her face, and when he saw the young man with similar features, he thought he was seeing things.
"Hey, Youyou, where are you going? This little cutie must be Weiwei." Lin Ping'an looked at the mother and daughter with some confusion. Why would they give up being the proper Madam of the Qu family and come here?
“Brother Ping’an, you live so close to Pingcheng, why didn’t you go back to see Uncle and Aunt? I think Aunt misses you a lot.” He Yuping was still thinking about Uncle Lin and his wife. Now that she saw their son, of course she wanted him to go home and see the two old folks.
"No, we have a mission this time, and we don't have to go through Heisei, so I didn't go home to see my parents. Sister, where are you going? And why are you taking Weiwei with you?" Lin Ping'an felt a little sad when he thought of his parents at home. He had been away for more than ten years.
They weren't originally going to join the army; they just followed their boss to Haicheng to make a living. However, their boss was a cunning man who hid many things very well. He always kept raising the prices of important military supplies.
Lin Ping'an couldn't stand it anymore, and his father told him that no matter what kind of money he earned, the most important thing was to be true to his conscience.
Seeing the boss's behavior, Lin Ping'an looked down on him completely, which is why he resolutely gave up that high-paying job and went directly to the army.
Ten years passed in the blink of an eye. He only returned once during that time, and the other few times were when he was on a mission. When he passed by his home and saw his parents, whose hair had turned white, Lin Ping'an felt both guilty and helpless.
“We’re going south to find my father. You know the Qu family is gone, right? I’m free now and don’t want to associate with those people anymore, so I’m taking Weiwei to Pengcheng to find my father. The Lin family father and son who drive the mule cart are villagers from Linjia Village, but I only asked them to take us to Yuncheng.” He Yuping didn’t hide her destination from Lin Ping’an.
"It's good that it's gone, it's good that it's gone, it should have been like this a long time ago. I heard it was burned down by fire. Were you and Weiwei hurt?" He really didn't expect He Yuping to become a concubine in the Qu family. After all, He Yuping was a very strong-willed person and disliked those who had multiple wives and concubines the most.
When he returned, Qu Weiwei had already been born, and changing the situation was unlikely. He had considered taking her with him when he left, but He Yuping refused, so he never brought it up again.
They grew up together, and he had always treated He Yuping like his own younger sister. Now, seeing her escape from the clutches of wolves, he was happy for her.
"No, we ran away when the fire started, but no one knew we were alive, so we hurriedly prepared to leave." He Yuping didn't say much, just letting him know that she and her daughter were unharmed.
"It's good that you're not injured. We're also going to Yuncheng. Why don't you ride with us?" Lin Ping'an thought of giving the mother and daughter a ride.
"No need, we'll just take the mule cart. If you don't know the way, just follow Uncle Lin. He's a skilled driver and has traveled this road through Yuncheng many times. He can show you the way, but a mule cart is no match for a car." He Yuping didn't dare bring her daughter on their cart. The food they had left outside was almost gone, and they wouldn't be able to sneak any if they were on their cart.
"You haven't changed a bit all these years. Fine, if you're not happy, then forget it. This truck is full of supplies, we can't afford to be delayed on the road. Let Uncle Lin come with us. I'll send a junior soldier with you. That way, we can protect you. When we get to the city gate of Yuncheng, we'll drop Uncle Lin off there, and he'll wait for you there. Okay, I'll go talk to Uncle Lin myself. Have you had breakfast? It seems like there's nothing to buy around here. We bought our dinner from Uncle Lin last night. I'll buy you and Weiwei something nice to eat when we get to the city." The supplies Lin Ping'an and his team were escorting were extremely urgent and couldn't be delayed. He hadn't traveled this route in ten years, and it had changed a lot. They almost took the wrong turn last night.
If we go the wrong way, who knows how long it will take to get back. It's safer to find someone we know.
"I'm fine with it, you can go talk to the uncle yourself." He Yuping felt that supplies were quite important. There were refugees everywhere outside, and if they were robbed, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Lin Ping'an left after speaking. He needed to talk to the uncle about the supplies, as they were really in urgent need of them; they hadn't stopped working for two days and two nights.
The reason we stopped last night wasn't just because we didn't know the way, but also because we wanted the guys to rest.
The rations they brought were robbed in half by some refugees on the way because a new recruit was too soft-hearted, which is why they had to buy food from the old man to fill their stomachs.
When He Yuping heard that they had run out of food, she beckoned her daughter over, thinking that she could give them some help. She couldn't let the heroes who defended their country go hungry.
