Because of this little incident, the atmosphere changed somewhat.
Ling Ruoke has already experienced a failed marriage and hasn't fully recovered, making her a sensitive person. Moreover, while Cang Weiwo imprisoned her, he kept bringing different women back, and this emotional entanglement was a fatal wound for her.
Her relationship with Huo Qingfeng had only just begun, not even on the right track, and yet someone had already stepped forward to declare war on her. How could a man as outstanding as him have only one admirer? How many more such entanglements would she face in the future? She lacked any cunning; how could she possibly compete with them? If a relationship required scheming to win, wasn't that too exhausting?
A series of question marks kept popping up in her mind, causing Ling Ruoke's mood to plummet.
"I'm a little tired after walking for so long, shall we go back?"
Huo Qingfeng pressed down on her shoulders and cupped her face. "Ruo Ke, you're angry with me."
Ling Ruoke pried his hand away, forcing a smile as she shook her head. "No. I'm just tired because I haven't moved around in a long time."
"If it's alright!" Huo Qingfeng wouldn't let her escape, stubbornly turning her face towards him.
“You don’t need to be insincere in front of me. I know it was my fault regarding Miao Miao, but I have no feelings for her. It was just Grandpa and Grandpa Gu joking around; don’t take it seriously.”
Ling Ruoke shook her head, her heart aching, yet she still smiled. "I wasn't being dishonest, I just... I just..."
She desperately wanted to say, "I'm just scared. The feeling of watching my man bring different women home every day, even putting on a live sex show, is terrifying!"
Huo Qingfeng was about to speak when his phone suddenly rang.
"You answer the phone first." Ruo Ke smiled and turned around, taking a deep breath to suppress her excitement.
She understood that it was all her own fault, not Huo Qingfeng's. It's natural for outstanding men or women to have no shortage of admirers.
"Okay, I understand."
"Is something wrong at the military base? If so, you should go back right away; that's important." This would give her a chance to calm down.
"No, it's just that some people from my family have come and are waiting at the military guesthouse."
"Then you should go back quickly, don't keep them waiting."
Huo Qingfeng looked at her, feeling a pang of sadness. He had hoped to spend a pleasant day with her, but then he ran into Miao Miao, and now his family was visiting, forcing him to rush back to his unit. "I'm sorry."
Ling Ruoke quickly shook her head with a smile. "This isn't your fault, why apologize?"
"Let's go. We'll take a taxi back, and then I'll drive back to the unit."
Throughout the journey, Ling Ruoke was held in Huo Qingfeng's arms, and neither of them spoke.
When they arrived at the apartment building, Huo Qingfeng put his arm around Ruo Ke and kissed her forehead. "Don't overthink it. The person I've chosen in my heart is you, and no one can change my mind."
Ling Ruoke nodded and gave him a bright smile. "I know."
Soon, the car sped away and disappeared from sight.
Ling Ruoke stood there for a while before stepping into the elevator.
Back inside, Tan Peishi was doing yoga and watching TV on the floor when she saw her and ran over in surprise.
"Why are you back so soon? You don't look well. What happened? Did the captain bully you?"
Ling Ruoke quickly shook her head, afraid that she would misunderstand. "No. His family came, so he has to rush back to the army. I'll go back to my room to rest for a while. You can continue."
Tan Peishi grabbed her and examined her closely. "Something's wrong! Something must have happened!"
He put his arm around Ruoke's shoulder and led her to sit on the sofa, taking her hand in his. "Ruoke, tell me. You like to keep everything bottled up inside, which isn't good; it can cause problems."
Ling Ruoke couldn't persuade her otherwise, so she had no choice but to tell her everything.
"That's all? That's all?" Tan Peishi exclaimed in disbelief after hearing this. She thought it was something serious, but it turned out to be just a minor incident involving a green apple.
Although she and the captain had an irreconcilable feud, she couldn't bear to see her best friend miss out on a good marriage, since the captain was still a very reliable person.
"I know what happened in the past has left you with lingering fears, but you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater, can you? Not all men in this world are like Cang Weiwo. It's not fair to the captain that you're doing this."
"Peishi, I—"
"Listen to me first!" Tan Peishi knelt on the yoga mat, took Ruo Ke's hands, and looked up slightly into her eyes.
"If you can, love is also a war. It's not enough for two people to love each other to be happy for a lifetime. You have to fight with your rivals, your in-laws, all sorts of unexpected events, your lover, and even yourself. These words may sound strange, but they are all true. You just haven't realized that it is actually a war."
"If that's the case, isn't it too tiring?" Ling Ruoke took a deep breath, truly feeling that love was exhausting.
"Ruoke, you can't be so pessimistic! The Ruoke I knew before wasn't like this! I remember you once said that life is more meaningful because of its ups and downs, you haven't forgotten, have you? Love is the same. If two people spend their whole lives without ever having a single moment of passion, wouldn't that be too boring? You know, many extramarital affairs happen because of this, don't they?"
Ling Ruoke pursed her lips and smiled. Although she still felt a tightness in her chest, she felt much better.
"Back to today's matter, she's just a naive little girl. The fact that she likes the captain proves he's a good man. If I were you, I would do the same—"
As she spoke, she put her hands on her hips, pointed her right index finger forward, and looked fierce.
"You little brat who hasn't even grown a beard yet, how dare you try to steal my man? You've got a death wish!"
"Pfft!" Ling Ruoke was amused by her funny expressions, actions, and words, and laughed. With that laugh, she felt the weight on her heart dissipate. It really wasn't a big deal; she was just too vulnerable right now.
"Peishi, thank you. Don't worry, I won't give up so easily." Happiness is something that needs to be fought for.
Tan Peishi waved her hand and sighed deeply. "Oh dear, I've discovered I'm a real psychology master. If I opened a psychology clinic, all those psychologists would have to go home and grow sweet potatoes."
Ling Ruoke couldn't help but chuckle. "Go ahead, I support you."
Suddenly remembering something, Tan Peishi rushed back to her side.
"However, even if we understand it, we still need to deal with the captain's situation."
He pulled Ruoke along and began to impart his experience in various ways.
Huo Qingfeng, who was in a hurry to get back and worried about Ruo Ke, had no idea that he had been tricked by Tan Peishi again.
God bless him, Amen!
