Yan Yu's question, "What is it?", though not harsh, made An Sanchuan's heart clench.
He was completely deflated.
The tiny spark that had just been ignited by a glimmer of hope was extinguished by those three words, leaving not even a spark.
He finally understood that hiding even the slightest thought from someone like that was tantamount to digging his own grave.
Beads of cold sweat seeped from his forehead, sliding down his temples and bringing a chilling sensation.
His throat was so dry it hurt. He dared not hide anything any longer and squeezed out each word in a hoarse voice, almost as if he were making his last arrangements.
"It's... a rumor about a treasure."
“I heard those old folks boasting when they were drunk in the Abe family’s ancestral land. They said that in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, there were a few patriotic elders who had accumulated enough wealth overseas to buy half a country and wanted to bring it back to save the country.”
As he said this, a glimmer of light, which he himself did not even notice, flashed in his lifeless eyes.
"But for some reason, that money didn't end up in the national treasury; instead, it was hidden away in a very mysterious way."
"The keys to unlocking the treasure are scattered among the descendants of those predecessors."
"I have no right to know exactly who it is. All I know is that the 'Miracle' organization was founded from the very beginning to find this treasure. They've been searching our country for decades with just a few old, almost rotten photos."
"Gu, Jin, Chen, Han, and Jin are their final targets. As for whether there are any others, I couldn't say even if I were torn to pieces."
An Sanchuan finished speaking in one breath, then slumped back in his chair, as if all the bones in his body had been removed, his chest heaving violently like a broken bellows.
He revealed his last card, nervously watching Yan Yu, awaiting the final judgment.
Yan Yu's gaze lingered on his face for a few seconds. An Sanchuan's disordered heartbeat and the slight twitching on his face did not escape his eyes.
I didn't lie.
Yan Yu withdrew his gaze and did not ask any more questions. Instead, he turned his head to look at the little girl in his arms who had been listening quietly the whole time.
That glance was both an inquiry and complete trust.
Ruan Tang met his gaze, and the puzzle in her mind about the five jade pendants was perfectly pieced together with a "click".
I see.
She peeked her little head out from Yan Yu's arms, looked at An Sanchuan, and asked in a sweet voice, "Why did that 'Miracle' organization contact you?"
“I was able to come back this time because of the connections they made,” An Sanchuan quickly replied, afraid of being a second too slow. “We ‘tools’ not only do the dirty work in Japan, but we also have to run errands for ‘miracles’. It’s like… a kind of transaction.”
Ruan Tang nodded, her mind perfectly clear.
To put it bluntly, he was a double agent being used as a tool by two groups of people.
She looked at Yan Yu beside her, and seeing that he had nothing to ask, she prepared to jump off the kang (a heated brick bed) and go to the bedroom to get something.
But as soon as she moved, Yan Yu was one step ahead of her.
He stretched out his long arm, his broad and warm palm pressing down on her shoulder, using irresistible force to push her back onto the warm kang (heated brick bed).
He stood up, his tall figure blocking most of the light, and asked in a low voice, "Where?"
Ruan Tang smiled, her heart filled with sweetness. She pointed to the locked mahogany box in the bedroom: "In the bottom little box, there is a white jade pendant."
Yan Yu didn't say a word, turned around and went into the bedroom.
A moment later, he came out with a warm, white jade pendant, sat back down on the edge of the kang (heated brick bed), and handed it to Ruan Tang.
