Gu Jinzhou sat in the corner, silently looking out the window, lost in thought.

These lively or quiet moments had nothing to do with Yan Yu and Ruan Tang.

Their little courtyard is a warm world of its own.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Yan Yu got up just as dawn was breaking.

He didn't let Ruan Tang do anything; he prepared breakfast by himself and properly packed the New Year's gifts to be sent.

He didn't go into the bedroom until the sun rose, and dug Ruan Tang out of bed, her little face flushed from sleeping.

Ruan Tang was wrapped up tightly in a thick cotton-padded coat, scarf, and hat, with only her almond-shaped eyes, still sleepy, showing.

Yan Yu took her warm little hand and went to the home of the brigade leader, Chen Fengshan.

Chen Fengshan and his wife were incredibly hospitable and insisted on inviting him to stay for a meal. Yan Yu, with his usual indifference, politely declined with a few words, put down his things, said a few polite New Year's greetings, and then took his leave with Ruan Tang.

Next was the home of former Party Secretary Chen Zhangmin.

The old Party Secretary's house was even more lively, with the whole family there. Han Qiaohua's eyes were practically glued to the baskets they were carrying.

Yan Yu remained aloof, polite but unapproachable.

After going around in circles, I finally completed the task.

Back in her own courtyard, Ruan Tang let out a long sigh of relief as she closed the gate.

Home is still the best.

The two of them barely went out during the entire New Year holiday.

Yan Yu cooked her all sorts of delicious food, and in just a few days, her little face became rounder.

Ruan Tang, on the other hand, was perfectly content to be her little lazy cat, either snuggling in Yan Yu's arms reading or directing Xiao Bai and Da Ju to "train" in the yard, living a leisurely and comfortable life.

Meanwhile, in Beijing, a thousand miles away...

In a windowless basement, the air was as heavy as if it were filled with lead.

Jia Ximei knelt down on the cold cement floor with a thud, her forehead pressed tightly against the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably.

In front of her was an open briefcase.

The box was empty.

The two jade pendants that she had painstakingly obtained from Jin Yuhong, even at the cost of exposing herself, were gone.

When was it lost?

She didn't know.

On her way back to Beijing from Jilin Province, she was extremely careful, keeping her suitcase with her at all times. Yet, right before her eyes, the contents vanished without a trace.

"waste!"

A cold male voice came from the shadows in the corner.

Jia Ximei shuddered violently, burying her head even lower, wishing she could embed herself into the ground.

She remembered being brought back to this place a few months ago after the Ruan family's mission failed.

Those cold instruments, the excruciating pain, the torment day and night... she thought she was going to die.

But the organization gave her another chance.

They haven't found the master key to the Ruan family's house, so they dare not make any rash moves for the time being. Although they could use explosives to blast open the cave, the noise would be too great and could easily attract trouble.

Therefore, the organization changed its plan, sending her to contact several other companies first to ensure that all the "keys" were firmly in her grasp before taking action.

She risked her life to complete the task in order to make amends for her mistakes.

She had already succeeded.

But now...

"I...I don't know...Sir, I really don't know..." Jia Ximei's voice was choked with sobs, filled with despair.

The person in the shadows remained silent.

But that chilling killing intent overwhelmed her completely like a tidal wave.

Jia Ximei knew that this time, she would have no more chances. (This chapter has been read. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
