Chapter 44 Starting Work (2/2)

Not far behind him was Zhao Weiguo, who was also pushing a cart.
Both of them were trained, with strong and healthy physiques. They pushed the stacked carts on the muddy road with ease, and their speed was much faster than that of others.
Yan Yu parked the cart on the dry open ground, bent down and carried off the heavy bundles of wheat, stacking them neatly.
He worked quickly and emptied the cart in no time.
As soon as he looked up, his gaze was precisely locked onto Ruan Tang, who was not far away, holding a wooden fork and clumsily spreading out wheat ears to dry, just like the others.
Yan Yu strode over and naturally took the wooden fork, which was taller than her, from her hand, saying in a low voice, "I'll do it."
With a flick of the man's wrist, the heavy wooden fork became as light as a straw in his hand.
In no time, a large pile of wheat ears was spread out flat and evenly, even more skillfully than the aunties who worked there year-round.
He had just finished when Gu Jinzhou and Chen Siming pushed their carts into the threshing ground. Gu Jinzhou was alright; after all, he came from a military compound and wasn't too useless.
Chen Siming was no match for him. His physique clearly showed that he hadn't done much physical work. He pushed the cart unsteadily, struggling to move forward with all his might. His steps were unsteady, and his face was flushed. After only a little over an hour, he looked like he had been soaked in water.
Yan Yu finished all the work in the small area that Ruan Tang was in charge of before handing the wooden fork to Ruan Tang.
As Ruan Tang took the wooden fork, she handed over the water bottle she was holding in her arms.
Yan Yu took it and, without any hesitation, tilted his head back and gulped down several mouthfuls from where she had just drunk.
The cool spring water slid down his bobbing Adam's apple, but his deep eyes remained fixed on the little girl's face, his gaze so intense it seemed to melt her.
After he finished drinking, he screwed the cap back on the kettle, held it in his hand, and spoke in a gentle and indulgent tone.
"If you're tired, go rest under the tree. I'll help you with that later."
After saying that, he got up, put the water bottle back in the basket, and then pushed the empty cart, following behind Chen Siming into the field.
Before leaving, he glanced coldly at Gu Jinzhou, who was watching them from a distance, with a look that was as sharp as an ice-cold knife.
It was a gaze filled with the possessiveness of a wild beast and a bloodthirsty warning.
Gu Jinzhou froze, feeling a chill rush from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, and even his breath caught in his throat for a moment.
Seeing this, Shen Yishan felt as if her heart was being pricked by needles, and her eyes instantly turned red.
She looked at Ruan Tang with envy, her voice trembling with tears: "Your boyfriend... is so good to you."
“Unlike Gu Jinzhou, he… he’s always cold and distant, and he doesn’t like to talk to me.”
Ruan Tang blinked her large, watery almond-shaped eyes and remained silent.
She couldn't really understand Shen Yishan's thought process.
Anyone with eyes could see that Gu Jinzhou was avoiding her like the plague, but this girl seemed to be blinded and insisted on banging her head against a wall.
Lin Xiangnan, standing to the side, didn't have Ruan Tang's good temper. She couldn't stand Shen Yishan's self-pitying appearance and immediately retorted:
"That's because you're stupid!"
"You have to hang yourself on one tree!"
"If you find someone who loves and cherishes you, wouldn't you be pampered like our Ruan Ruan?"
Lin Xiangnan originally wanted to call out "Tangtang".
But when she thought about how Yan Yu's sharp gaze had shot over her the moment she uttered the word "Tang," the icy coldness emanating from it could freeze a person to death.
As soon as Lin Xiangnan thought about it, she shivered.
She quickly shook her head; her life was more important. "Ruan Ruan" sounded nice too. (This chapter has been read. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
