Chapter 25 Old Tieshan Commune (2/2)
Reading Settings
However, this group of educated youth was generally lucky. The county they were assigned to was surrounded by relatively wealthy villages under the jurisdiction of the surrounding communes. Each village had its own industry.
For example, there are breeding cooperatives, brick and tile factories, and even a handicraft workshop. It is said that the daily supply and marketing cooperatives are vying to do business with them.
Being a sent-down youth here, as long as you are willing to work hard and endure hardship, you can not only have enough to eat, but also learn some real skills.
When Yan Yu and Ruan Tang arrived, several educated youths were already standing nearby.
The two of them stood to one side, and the girl who had wanted to switch seats with Chen Siming on the train and her fiancé also came over.
As Ruan Tang approached, she noticed that the girl's eyes were swollen, suggesting she had just been crying.
So these two had another disagreement after getting off the train? If they're so incompatible, why did they get engaged in the first place?
Once most of the people had arrived, the educated youth office staff began taking attendance and then arranging for them to board the vehicles.
This Liberation truck was specially borrowed from the Armed Forces Department and had to be returned this afternoon. So once the personnel were confirmed, they were put on the truck and driven away quickly.
A total of 80 educated youths boarded several trucks parked by the roadside. The group of people were crammed into the truck beds, swaying and rocking. By the time they arrived in Beilu County, it was already 10 a.m.
After getting off the truck, these people were given no time to react before being assigned to communes by name. From the county town to the communes, some communes sent tractors to pick them up, while others only sent people.
Fortunately, the Laotieshan Commune, where Ruan Tang and his group were going, sent two tractors, which was quite a generous gesture.
An old Dongfanghong tractor was parked in front of the brand-new one, with the words "Laotieshan Commune" affixed to its body in red.
The driver was a young man in his early twenties with dark skin and a bright white smile.
Standing next to him was a middle-aged man wearing a faded blue cadre uniform, whose shrewd eyes scrutinized everyone.
"Don't just stand there! Those going to Laotieshan Commune, get on here!" Chen Aiguo's voice boomed. "Hurry up, the sun won't wait for anyone!"
A group of people pushed and shoved their way into the truck bed. Ruan Tang was about to climb up herself with her bag when Yan Yu grabbed her shoulder.
"Don't move," he whispered, lifting the backpack from her hands and his own suitcase together. He jumped into the truck bed in a few steps, carefully placing the two suitcases on the side of the sideboard, and then padded the backpack. "Sit here."
Under the watchful eyes of everyone, his movements were clean and efficient, and his tone was domineering yet with a hint of doting, making Ruan Tang's ears burn slightly.
After everything was settled, Yan Yu sat down next to her, their knees almost touching.
Soon the tractor started moving, and a strong smell of diesel fuel mixed with the stench of mud filled the air.
As the tractor jolted along, Ruan Tang soon felt that after getting train sickness, she was now getting tractor sickness.
She felt her internal organs churning up and down in rhythm. At first, she could manage to hold on, but later her face grew paler and paler, and she even bit her lower lip until there were faint teeth marks.
Yan Yu glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and saw that the little girl's already snow-white face looked even paler now, and her almond-shaped eyes were wet, making her look aggrieved and as if she could cry at any moment.
He frowned slightly, subtly took out the little girl's water bottle, unscrewed the cap, and handed it to her: "Want some water?"
The tractor was too noisy, so he leaned close to Ruan Tang and spoke in a low voice, but everyone could hear what he was saying immediately.
Seeing that Ruan Tang didn't react, he simply picked up the kettle, brought the spout to her lips, and coaxed her in a low voice that only the two of them could hear:
"Sweetie, drink a little, you'll feel better." (This chapter has been finished. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
