Ruan Tang didn't even bother to take off her shoes properly. With a flick of her toe, she kicked the cloth shoes away, and like a fish out of water, she eagerly fell into the embrace of the bed.

The scent of the old wooden bed, a unique blend of sunshine and dust, lingered around my nose.

In my ears, I could hear the steady footsteps of the puppet grandma occasionally moving around in the courtyard.

The sound grew farther and farther away, becoming increasingly faint...

Consciousness sank completely into the boundless darkness.

Ruan Tang slept exceptionally soundly, as if trying to dissolve all the fatigue and fear accumulated over two lifetimes into this moment of peace.

The sunlight outside the window gradually transitioned from bright golden-white to warm orange-yellow, and was finally completely swallowed up by the calm indigo.

The whole world seemed to fall silent as she fell into a deep sleep.

Ruan Tang was awakened by hunger.

This mortal body is so delicate; if I miss a meal, I'll be starving, my stomach will feel empty and burning.

She rubbed her eyes and sat up. It was well past dinner time, and there probably wasn't even a single vegetable left to see at the state-run restaurant's window.

The puppet grandmother walked in carrying a bowl of warm spirit rice porridge and two small dishes. Her perpetually expressionless face revealed no emotion whatsoever.

The porridge is still the same porridge, cooked until soft, smooth, and fragrant, with glistening grains of rice, full of vitality.

But Ruan Tang only took one sip before losing her appetite.

All she could think about was the rich and satisfying taste of that meat bun she had eaten at noon.

Without comparison, there is no harm.

No matter how good this spirit rice porridge is, it's just "feed" to replenish energy, bland as water, and can't compare to the delicious, oily worldly food.

She sighed heavily, pinched her nose, and resignedly gulped down a bowl of porridge.

Never mind, let's fill our stomachs first.

After finishing her meal, she felt her strength returning.

Ruan Tang jumped off the chair and clapped her hands.

"Grandma, I'm leaving."

She nimbly climbed onto the broad back of the puppet grandmother, and then casually pulled out the treasure-hunting rat that was sleeping sprawled out, clutching a storage bag, from her spatial storage.

Little Bai was startled awake. His beady black eyes were still a little dazed, but when he saw Ruan Tang, he immediately straightened up and became energetic.

With a flick of her finger, Ruan Tang sent three invisibility talismans, each as thin as a cicada's wing, into the body of her, the puppet granny, and the treasure-hunting rat.

The three figures vanished from their spot in an instant, as if they had never existed.

The night breeze swept through the narrow alley, carrying a few fallen leaves.

"First stop, west of the city, No. 7 Chunliu Lane."

Ruan Tang whispered the address into her mother-in-law's ear.

That was where Mayor Bai kept his mistress.

Compared to Mayor Bai's heavily guarded home, this place is undoubtedly a better entry point.

…………

Chunliu Lane is an old alley, with dim streetlights that cast long shadows.

The entrance to Courtyard No. 7 is not large, with a black lacquered wooden door and dust on the door knocker, looking like an ordinary family's home.

With a swift movement, the puppet grandmother silently carried Ruan Tang over the courtyard wall and landed steadily inside the courtyard.

This is a rather elegant little courtyard with three main rooms, one bright and two dark. In the corner of the courtyard grows a grape trellis, the vines of which have already climbed all over the wooden frame.

The room was pitch black; the occupants were clearly asleep.

Ruan Tang slid off her mother-in-law's back, took out a small incense burner from her storage bag, lit a tiny flame with her fingertips, and ignited the incense inside.

A faint, almost undetectable sweet fragrance, like a wisp of smoke, drifted leisurely in through the crack in the window.

After doing all this, she leisurely patted the treasure-hunting rat's fluffy head and placed thirty brand-new storage bags in front of it.

"Little Bai, listen carefully." This chapter has been finished. (Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
