Chapter 158 The 158th Day of Not Running Away The First Day of Not Running Away...
When Lin Qingfeng and his brother arrived, they saw that Chen Bozheng's house was bustling with activity.
The children from both sides of the courtyard came to wish each other a Happy New Year.
"Brother, how much is in your red envelope?" a little girl in a floral cotton-padded jacket asked her brother.
Her brother tore open the red envelope, glanced at it, and exclaimed happily, "I have ten yuan!"
"I'll have ten yuan too!" the little girl said happily. "Let's keep two yuan to buy candy, and give the rest to Mom and Dad."
Lin Qingfeng's younger brother watched the children run away, then turned back to Lin Qingfeng and said, "Brother, Zheng-ge is really generous. Those two don't even look like they're from our compound, why did he give them twenty yuan?"
Lin Qingfeng, carrying two large bags of things, said, "Brother Zheng has always been generous, you know that."
Lin Qingfeng and his brother squeezed through the crowd and saw that the monks had also arrived and were helping to distribute red envelopes.
The fat man also scolded the kids, "What are you grabbing for? You've messed up that little girl's hair. If you keep grabbing, I'll make you line up again."
The little kids got embarrassed and shrank back.
Lin Qingfeng carried the things inside, jokingly asking, "Fatty, why are you so angry? Where's Zheng-ge?"
He had just finished speaking when he saw Chen Bo coming out of the house.
Chen Bo saw him, paused for a moment, and nodded: "You're here?"
Lin Qingfeng smiled broadly: "Brother, it's so lively over here. Why didn't you tell me? I would have come over to help distribute red envelopes too."
Chen Bozheng smiled slightly, "I didn't intend to call anyone, but they all came on their own. As for you, what did you bring? Why are there two big bags?"
Lin Qingfeng realized what was happening and quickly picked up the two bags and handed them to Chen Bozheng: "I bought some things, mostly tonics. People say they're good for people with weak constitutions, like ginseng and bird's nest. I don't know anything about them, so I just bought them randomly. Brother, you're healthy, you don't need to take these. I also bought you a watch."
He took a box out of his coat pocket and handed it to Chen Bozheng. When the box was opened, a Longines watch was inside.
The fat man saw it, exclaimed "Damn," ran over, picked up the box, looked at it, and said, "This watch isn't cheap. It's from Hong Kong, at least several thousand dollars. Fengzi, you're something else, you've really struck it rich."
Lin Qingfeng smiled, somewhat smugly, "It's alright, only a million or so, not much."
His brother's chin is practically pointing to the sky.
Wen Chan had just come in from outside, having bought a bunch of candies and cookies with Liu Yan, when she heard Lin Qingfeng say this.
Liu Yan didn't mince words and immediately said, "Fengzi, you're really talking big now. A million or so isn't a lot? How much is considered a lot?"
When Lin Qingfeng saw them return, he greeted them. When Liu Yan said something that was both affectionate and sarcastic, he touched his nose and said, "I was just joking. Why did you and your sister-in-law buy all these snacks? They're all cheap stuff. If you want some, I have plenty at home. I'll get them for you."
Wen Chan smiled faintly and said, "No need. We just accidentally gave out all the snacks and went out to buy some for them."
These snacks are already quite good for the children in the tenement.
No one complained about the cheap price. After taking the candy and cookies, they thanked them sweetly and praised Wen Chan and the other girl for being pretty, which made Liu Yan very happy.
Liu Yan grabbed a little girl and asked, "Er Ya, do you think I'm prettier, or is Sister Wen Chan prettier?"
Er Ya sniffed, looked at Wen Chan, and said without hesitation, "Sister Wen Chan."
Liu Yan, feeling embarrassed, retorted irritably, "I gave you candy for nothing."
Er Ya chuckled and said, "Sister Wen Chan is just as pretty as Sister Yan Zi. If Sister Yan Zi didn't nag me, she would be even prettier."
"You little rascal, you're quite clever." Liu Yan said, both amused and exasperated, as she grabbed a handful of fruit candies and stuffed them into her pocket. "You shouldn't be running around like that all the time. Your mother isn't well, so you kids should help her with some chores, okay?"
"Okay, we've even learned how to make matchboxes recently," Er Ya giggled. "Sister Yanzi is so kind."
She even blew a kiss, just like foreigners, which made Liu Yan laugh.
Wen Chan wasn't familiar with the children, so she grabbed a handful of each one. Seeing Liu Yan's enthusiastic activity, she joked at lunchtime, "Yanzi is the queen of the kids in our compound; I think she knows every single one of them."
Lin Qingfeng and his brother stayed for lunch. Upon hearing this, Lin Qingfeng said, "That's right. When we were bullied as kids, Sister Yanzi often stood up for us, especially Monk. He was often beaten up when we were young, and it was always Sister Yanzi who helped him fight back."
Wen Chan looked at the monk with some surprise in her eyes, "A monk has had this kind of time?"
The monk's ears turned red. "I was young then."
“You were not only young back then, but also very honest. When someone tricked you into believing there were coal nuggets to collect, you actually believed them. In the end, they belonged to someone else, and you almost got arrested as a thief.”
Lin Qingfeng joked.
The monk frowned slightly, seemingly somewhat displeased.
Liu Yan said, "It's been so many years. I didn't really want to be a leader of the kids, but those kids nowadays are even wilder than we were when we were young. They run around outside all the time, and there are so many cars now. If you accidentally bump into one, something terrible can happen. Like Er Ya and her sisters, last time they were chasing a dog outside and they almost got hit by a car."
"Isn't Er Ya from the big courtyard next door?" Fatty said to Liu Yan while shoveling rice into his mouth. "Yanzi, you're so kind. You even care about the people in our big courtyard next door."
Liu Yan rolled her eyes at him, "I care about someone from out of town like you, so why wouldn't I care about someone from our neighboring compound?"
Everyone couldn't help but laugh, their shoulders shaking with mirth.
Everyone was sensible and knew that these few days of the Lunar New Year were a rare time when Chen Bozheng and Wen Chan could finally have some free time, so they left after lunch.
Chen Bozheng told Lin Qingfeng to take the things he brought with him, but he left them behind.
Wen Chan went over and opened the bag to take a look. It was all goods from the Friendship Store, and the prices weren't cheap. All the items added up would cost several thousand.
She looked at Chen Bozheng, "What should we do with these things?"
Chen Bo walked over with his hands in his pockets, glanced at the items, and frowned slightly. "You can keep them. I'll return the gifts to him later."
Wen Chan glanced at Chen Bozheng and said, "Are you not happy?"
Chen Bo was about to deny it, but when he met Wen Chan's frank gaze, he couldn't lie and could only nod, "I'm not very happy."
"Because Lin Qingfeng is very arrogant and cocky now?" Wen Chan casually packed her things. Her health wasn't very good, so she didn't take any supplements. Instead, she followed the doctor's advice on her diet and routine.
Chen Bo sighed and leaned against the table. "I asked Fengzi about the TV before. He told me that a friend introduced him to it."
Chen Bo picked up an orange from the table, peeled it, tasted it, and thought it was pretty good. He then shared half with Wen Chan. "Tell me," he said, "what kind of friends does he need to have this kind of connection to be willing to help him make money like this?"
Chen Bo was helping the monks make money because they had been friends for many years, and one person simply couldn't handle all these businesses. He wanted to keep the profits within the family, and he trusted the monks' abilities and character, so he gave them a hand.
Selling televisions is different. Televisions are in high demand, especially before the Lunar New Year. It's no exaggeration to say that anyone who isn't a fool can sell a fully functional television.
This kind of business doesn't require many people. As long as you have goods, there are plenty of people willing to buy from you.
Wen Chan tidied up the files on the desktop, glanced at him helplessly, and said, "Chen Bozheng, you sometimes overthink things. I understand that you are their brother and feel obligated to take care of them, but they are not children anymore. Not to mention others, even the monk's mother has to take care of finding him a wife. Sometimes you should learn not to meddle."
Chen Bozheng is actually a very loyal and sentimental person.
Wen Chan didn't think there was anything wrong with it, but it depended on who it was dealing with and how it was handled.
If someone clearly doesn't want you to ask or care about them, then there's no need to interfere.
Chen Bozheng didn't say anything, but while peeling the orange, he accidentally got orange juice sprayed all over his face.
Wen Chan handed him a piece of paper and, as he wiped his face clean, said, "Liu Yan said there's a place that makes really good mutton soup. Why don't we go try it tonight?"
"Okay," Chen Bozheng agreed.
The mutton soup place was a bit far. Liu Yan had originally planned to tell them the way so they could have some alone time, but it turned out that even Chen Bozheng didn't know how to get there.
There was no other way but to go along. Wen Qunshu had heard that they were going to eat mutton soup when he came over, so he shamelessly dragged the monk along.
"Monks can come, but what are you doing here?"
Wen Chan spoke to Wen Qunshu rather bluntly.
Wen Qunshu chuckled and said, "President Wen, as your employee, you and your loved one need someone to help you when you go out. I'll take care of everything for you."
The monk's lips twitched; he could hardly bear to watch.
Wen Chan said, "Okay, then you can serve me faithfully later, but don't eat anything."
Wen Qunshu's face immediately turned as bitter as a gourd. He looked at Chen Bozheng and said, "President Chen, I used to be one of your soldiers. Are you just going to watch President Wen bully me?"
Chen Bo patted him on the shoulder, "A real man won't die from missing a meal."
Liu Yan, standing to the side, was almost laughing herself silly.
She glanced at her watch: "If we're going to leave, let's hurry up and leave. Otherwise, it'll be too crowded at mealtimes. They also sell barbecue over there. Anyone who doesn't like mutton soup can have barbecue instead."
Fearing they would attract too much attention, the group didn't drive the Rolls-Royce, but instead drove Chen Bozheng's Santana.
That place is really remote. It used to be a residence, but it was converted into a storefront. The place isn't big, and the entrance is full of bicycles, motorcycles, and cars.
Chen Bozheng and his group arrived at just the right time; someone had just left, and they were passing by.
The waitress was a pretty young girl, about seventeen or eighteen years old. She probably helped with chores at home and was there to help take orders.
Wen Chan didn't have any particular taste, so they just ordered whatever they wanted. Chen Bozheng and the others, on the other hand, ate a lot. They ordered five bowls of mutton soup, asked the restaurant to add more offal, and also ordered a lot of barbecue, including beef, pork belly, mutton, and chicken wings.
Liu Yan also ordered beer and a pot of tea for Wen Chan.
