Chapter 113 Finding a Little Tabby Cat

Shen Nanzi lifted her skirt and stepped off the carriage, following the sound of the cat's meow.

The weather was scorching hot, and the streets were almost deserted.

Shen Nanzi found a tabby cat under the shade of a tree not far from the carriage.

That mournful sound was its cry.

It was about the size of a palm, standing shakily with thin, wiry limbs, matted fur, and a sunken belly.

A pair of dark eyes looked at her pitifully.

Shen Nanzi's heart almost melted. She took out her handkerchief and wrapped it around the kitten that kept meowing.

Qinghe and I circled around the area but couldn't find the mother cat; instead, we found the body of another kitten.

It seems to be a little tabby cat that has been abandoned.

It's hot, and there's no water or food nearby. I doubt we'll survive more than two days.

Shen Nanzi took the little tabby cat into the carriage and said to the coachman, "Go quickly to the Flower and Bird House."

After her carriage left, two men emerged from the alleyway next to her.

They exchanged glances, and one of them said, "You go back and report to your master; I'll go with her."

The other person left immediately.

Fearing the kitten would die, Shen Nanzi urged the driver to head towards the flower and bird hut.

After drinking milk from its mother cat Douzi, its meowing finally stopped.

Shen Nanzi and Qinghe were both very happy, and the water buffalo was gesturing as well.

It means he will take good care of Little Tabby, so she can rest assured.

Shen Nanzi's anxious heart finally calmed down. "I will come to visit it whenever I have time."

The water buffalo picked up a stick and wrote on the ground: "Prince Jing has come five times, all to see the beans."

Shen Nanzi looked at the writing on the ground, then at Douzi, who had already given birth to her second child.

Xie Yan…

"Water buffalo." Xie Yu's voice came from the doorway.

Shen Nanzi and the other two turned around and saw his guard holding a sleeping little boy.

He looked about three or four years old, dressed in tattered clothes, and his exposed skin was filthy.

My calf is still in a splint; it's injured.

"What's going on?" Shen Nanzi stood up and walked towards Xie Yu.

"This child had his leg broken. He's a beggar, an orphan. He was injured by other beggars while fighting for food."

Xie Yu said, "Such a young child, if no one takes care of him, he will definitely die."

"So, you picked it up again." Shen Nanzi understood Xie Yu all too well and quickly went to check on the child's condition.

I touched my forehead; it was cold.

"Thankfully, there's no fever. With proper care, the child will recover quickly."

The group of several people settled the child at the place where the water buffalo and Cui'er lived.

Xie Yu instructed, "Water Buffalo, the doctor will come to deliver medicine to him regularly. You and Cui'er should take good care of him."

"Once he recovers, he can stay if he wants, or let him leave if he doesn't."

Shen Nanzi looked at Xie Yu: "He's so young, where can he go?"

Xie Yu readily agreed: "Then let him stay! When he's older, it's up to him whether he stays or leaves."

Shen Nanzi was finally satisfied and looked down at the child on the bed.

It's so pitiful that she had to suffer the pain of a broken leg at such a young age. If she hadn't met Xie Yu, she probably would have stayed in this summer forever.

After settling the child in, it was getting late, so the two headed towards the exit at the foot of the mountain.

"What a strange day! You found a little beggar, and I found a stray cat..."

Before Shen Nanzi could finish speaking, she sensed something was wrong and looked at Xie Yu.

Xie Yu also realized what was happening, met her gaze, and whispered, "How many have we found in all these years? And yet we found a beggar and a cat on the same day?"

"It seems someone deliberately lured us here." Shen Nanzi thought of Madam Sun from the previous two days, and her voice was also very low.

Xie Yu's usually relaxed face showed a hint of seriousness as he instructed her, "Be sure to be careful these next few days."

Shen Nanzi understood, "You also need to be careful. Your status is not what it used to be. You are a thorn in the side of your enemies."

"I'm afraid our friendship will be exposed and used against us by others."

"Then let's try to avoid meeting each other for now, to avoid any trouble." Xie Yu's expression was deep. "If anything happens, I'll go to see Grand Commandant Shen."

"Hmm! Have you found any leads on the person who tried to assassinate you last time?" Shen Nanzi was also investigating and had made some progress, but then the investigation stalled.

"I have no clue whatsoever. Recently, I've made connections with the Phantom Pavilion and have been able to obtain more comprehensive information, but there's still no progress."

Xie Yu was somewhat troubled. "We need our own intelligence gathering department."

“I am doing it,” Shen Nanzi said. “Don’t I have businesses all over Yunhan?”

"I made some inquiries, and they are actually quite similar. If we want to get information about the rest of Yunhan, we just need to go from the open to the covert."

Xie Yu's eyes lit up, and he tilted his head, whispering, "Your brother is right, you are very useful."

Shen Nanzi smiled and said, "You flatter me! I can't offer much help to your court affairs; I only wish to do what I can. However, this takes time, and I'm afraid I won't have enough time."

"It's alright, something is better than nothing."

"You and your brother must not let anyone find out about your private army," Shen Nanzi said in a very low voice. "We're probably being watched right now, with everything we say and do being monitored."

"Grand Commandant Shen is truly a talented individual, quite remarkable." Xie Yu was extremely pleased and admiring. "At least for now, he seems impeccable."

"Of course, it doesn't matter whose brother he is."

The two heads were very close together as they spoke in secret.

Xie Yan walked into the flower and bird hut and saw this scene as soon as he looked up.

His anxious gaze flickered with a moment of surprise before returning to calm.

In his obsidian-like eyes, like an ancient pool, beneath the surface of calm, a turbulent undercurrent is all the more apparent.

Wu Ying looked at the two people above who seemed oblivious to everyone else, barely able to contain her anger. "Your Highness, you heard that Princess Jing had not returned to the Jing Prince's residence, and you were anxiously searching for her everywhere."

"How is Princess Jing doing? She's actually here joking and laughing with the Sixth Prince."

Wuying felt that if she said the words "private meeting," her prince might not be able to handle it, so she said "just kidding."

Xie Yan watched the two approaching figures from afar, then turned and left.

Wuying followed behind, saying, "Your Highness, Princess Jing is your wife. How could she disregard your reputation and have a private relationship with the Sixth Prince?"

"I believe you should stay and take Princess Jing back, or at least warn the Sixth Prince."

"Shut up!"

Xie Yan went out, mounted his black steed, and with a flick of his whip, the horse galloped through the mountains and forests.

Halfway there, he pulled on the reins, causing Wuying, who was following behind, to brake suddenly. The horse's neck was pulled very high, and its front legs were raised before it came to a stop.

"Your Highness, why did you stop?"

Wuying assumed that his lord had listened to what he said.

“There are hoofprints here.” Xie Yan looked at the potholes in the mud, which were obviously fresh.

Just now he saw two carriages parked in front of the flower and bird hut.

It belongs to Shen Nanzi and Xie Yu.

They were also marks left from the previous night's downpour, which had washed away the mud and made the ground very smooth.

The hoofprints from the horses coming down the mountain were too obvious.

This indicates that before they went up the mountain, others came down from above.

It seems he really needs to go up there.

So, when Shen Nanzi and Xie Yu reached the door, Xie Yan also appeared at the door.

The group looked at each other.
