Chapter 40 Xie Yan Seems to See Himself

Inside the shed by the gate, Shen Nanzi was munching on a white radish, sitting on a wooden chair with her legs swinging.

Xie Chengze had disappeared somewhere. Little Huang was right in front of her, slurring his words as he watched Shen Nanzi munching on a radish.

The moment Shen Nanzi saw Xie Yan, the white radish in her mouth suddenly lost its sweetness, and she tossed it to Xiao Huang.

She took out a handkerchief and wiped the juice from between her fingers.

"You brought beans here!" Xie Yanren's voice came before he even arrived.

He strode up to her, his face set with the air of someone settling scores with her.

Shen Nanzi stood up defiantly, facing his anger head-on, her beautiful eyes fixed on him.

“These aren’t your beans!” she said righteously, pointing at the mother cat in his arms.

"I told you, I killed your beans a long time ago! I buried them under the tree to use as fertilizer."

“These are my beans,” Xie Yan pointed to the ears on the top of her head, “one white ear, one black ear, and heterochromia.”

“There are plenty of kittens that look alike in this world, this one is not your Bean.”

"Shen Nanzi! You're lying through your teeth again." Xie Yan was both angry and delighted.

Douzi didn't die. He brought Douzi home just two days after it was born and raised it with great difficulty.

He went out for a while, and when he came back, he didn't see it.

She said she took the stone away, beat it to death, and buried it under the tree.

He also saw the blood-stained stone, the one she used to smash the beans to death.

He stormed into her yard and demanded to know why she had killed his cat.

What did she say? She just couldn't stand the sight of it!

He said he only knew how to hug his cat all day long, and then he went on and on, but anyway, she killed his cat!

He even said he'd kill her if she wasn't satisfied!

Her attitude was so arrogant that he was so angry he wanted to strangle her!

Seeing that Douzi is still alive, it seems as if the stubborn problem in his heart has suddenly been cleared away.

However, her refusal to admit it only fueled his anger.

He harbored unspeakable resentment towards her.

"I said it's not true, and that's final. Don't make up stories about your cat." Shen Nanzi stubbornly refused to admit it.

"You actually let her get pregnant and have puppies?" Touching her loose belly, Xie Yan felt both angry and heartbroken as she thought about how it had been abused by other male cats.

This is the kitten he raised himself.

She's so heartless to let it give birth! "What if it dies in childbirth?"

Shen Nanzi grinned, looking at Xie Yan in disbelief.

"It was a free-choice relationship; I didn't force her!"

Shen Nanzi was furious. He felt sorry for a cat so much that he was worried about her having a difficult birth.

He couldn't help but sneer, "What? You want to strangle me again?"

"Whatever, you're Prince Jing anyway, you can do whatever you want!"

It's not that she's competing for attention with a cat, it's just that she can't stand it.

In his heart, she wasn't even as good as a cat.

When she gave birth, he was angry with Xiao Wan because of her, and was ordered to go to provide disaster relief.

Later, she took care of the child, and he raised the cat.

She noticed how much he cared for the cat, yet he ignored Cheng'er's illness.

In a fit of anger, she took his cat away.

Back then, she was young and impetuous, thinking that if she took away his beloved cat, he would pay more attention to the child.

But instead of his concern, she heard his anxious cries.

Her son, Cheng'er, was running a high fever and his life was hanging in the balance, but he was extremely anxious because of a cat.

When the stone came, she pointed to the stone that had been used to kill the chicken and told him that she had killed the cat by hitting it and buried it under the tree.

Xie Yan stormed into her courtyard in a fit of rage, and she would remember his fierce and menacing appearance for the rest of her life.

"Get away! Don't come near my mother!"

Xie Chengze suddenly appeared between the two, pushing Xie Yan's legs with both hands, his small body tense, resisting with all his might.

Xie Yan lowered her eyes and met a pair of bloodshot eyes, their dark, bright pupils like two burning flames, filled with anger and sorrow.

Xie Yan felt a tremor in his heart, as if he were seeing his younger self.

When his mother was seriously ill, he made his way through crowds and pushed aside the guards blocking his way to find his high and mighty father, the emperor.

He knelt before him, begging him to heal his mother.

However, his father only glanced at him before ordering his men to drag him away.

At that time, he hated his father intensely.

Xie Yan recalled his disheveled state with some disgust, and looked at Xie Chengze with some surprise.

What is he doing?

It seems he is repeating his father's behavior towards him!

He stared blankly at Xie Chengze, his small shoulders hunched, his arms straining, and his jaw clenched.

Despite not having much strength, Xie Yan was still pushed back a step by him.

He was shocked and guilty, and instantly understood why Shen Nanzi always covered Cheng'er's ears.

"Cheng'er!" Shen Nanzi quickly protected Xie Chengze and pulled him behind her.

"It's okay, Mom and Dad are just talking about the cat, don't be angry."

Xie Yan looked at the mother and son, and how much they resembled her mother protecting him back then!

In an instant, her anger dissipated. Holding Douzi, she said somewhat awkwardly to Xie Chengze, "Yes! We were just talking about Douzi."

Shen Nanzi looked at him, somewhat surprised that Xie Yan was actually explaining to Cheng'er.

This is truly the first time I've ever seen an iron tree bloom like this!

Xie Chengze, however, was unmoved. He gazed at the cat in Xie Yan's arms with a calm expression, then glanced at the cat's nest.

"Put it down."

Xie Yan wanted to say something, but in the end, he silently put the beans into the cat's bed.

It lay down obediently, and the three kittens, attracted by the scent, went to its lap to nurse.

Looking at Douzi with a motherly expression, she showed him her three babies.

Xie Yan didn't say anything more!

It's good that it's still alive. It's a female cat, and it'll be a mother cat sooner or later.

It was beyond her control.

Xie Yan turned and left.

Shen Nanzi watched him ride away on horseback, then turned to ask Xie Yu.

"Why is he here?" His tone was full of displeasure. "What did you say?"

Xie Yu recounted their conversation.

Shen Nanzi patted her chest, "I was worried that he wouldn't let me come again."

“Third Brother is not an unreasonable person,” Xie Yu said truthfully.

Shen Nanzi shook her head, gazing at the sky. "What kind of person is he? I know him all too well. He's definitely the worst person to me in this world."

"You two might just not be suited to be a couple," Xie Yu said with a smile, glancing at her.

She wore a white brocade jacket embroidered with red flowers, her waist was slender, her hair brushed past her snow-white skin, and her eyelashes were thick and slightly curled.

Her exquisite face was breathtakingly beautiful.

“You’re right! I’ve spent ten years and I’ve come to the complete conclusion that we’re not suited to be a couple.”

She smiled, like a beautiful and elegant peony.

"Xie Yu, have you ever thought about becoming the crown prince?"

Xie Yu, like her, was gazing at the sky.

The tree branches blocked part of the sky, but also provided the background color for it.

The sprawling branches, under the vast expanse of white, did not appear so menacing.

"Third Brother is more suitable than me."

"This person has no ambition; he only wants to watch the flowers bloom and fade, and the clouds drift and gather."

"To be a carefree prince."

Shen Nanzi looked back at him, "Alright! Then be a carefree person and never step into the vortex of power."

Later, fate did not go as they wished; everyone was controlled by fate.

Everyone embarked on a path that was not originally theirs.
