When Jin Miao took the college entrance exam, she didn't have to worry about applying to universities at all. It was when Jin He was out traveling that she suddenly received a call from her sister, who said that several schools had already contacted her. Those schools had even received Jin Miao's college entrance exam scores earlier than she had received hers.

Jin He almost burst into tears backstage after hearing that her younger sister had secured the top score in her exams. Jin Miao also lived up to expectations, choosing one of the nation's top medical universities for a combined bachelor's and master's degree program.

Jin Miao had just finished her experiment and changed her clothes when her phone rang. She wondered who would still make a phone call these days. After putting on her coat, she pulled out her long hair.

Hello?

"Is this Xiao Miao?" a woman's voice came from the other end of the phone. "Oh, that's great! What are you doing?"

Who are you?

The woman paused for a moment, then said, "I'm your mother. We met just a couple of days ago. Don't you remember me?"

"oh."

Jin Miao didn't have many memories of her mother. She only remembered that her mother rarely came home from childhood to adulthood. Every time she came home, she would bring Yang Jiahui a lot of new clothes and delicious food. When she was little, Jin Miao didn't understand and asked Jin He, "Why has Mom never bought us anything?"

She must have been seven or eight years old then, and her brother was only eleven or twelve. The boy was tall and slender, and he held his sister's fair little hand and said, "Because we are staying at Uncle's house, Mom has to make Uncle and Aunt happy so that we can have a good life."

Another time, when she was in the second year of junior high school, her mother suddenly threw her a bag of women's underwear, saying that girls should be more discreet as they grow up, and that she shouldn't need others to remind her about wearing underwear anymore. She was too young to understand at the time, and only remembered that when she put on her lace underwire bra that morning, her brother immediately objected.

He took a morning off that day, took Jin Miao to the village chief's house to help pick strawberries and earned fifty yuan. He then took Jin Miao on a swaying bus to the town and bought two vests.

Many years later, she learned that it was actually Jin He who brought up this matter with her mother that day, saying that Xiao Miao was growing up and should buy some things for girls. As the older brother, he had some inconveniences and hoped that her mother could take her younger sister to a better place to buy underwear.

Why did you think of my brother? Jin Miao sighed. I'll go see him tonight after the experiment!

"Oh, it's like this. I've been free lately, and your little brother is starting kindergarten soon, so I brought him to see what your prestigious university is like. I hope he'll study hard and get into a good university like you."

"Okay, you guys have a good time." Jin Miao was about to hang up the phone. "I have a group meeting in a bit."

"Hey, hey, Xiao Miao!" Yang Xiaoli quickly intervened, "Why don't you come and keep Mom company? Mom doesn't know the way either, what if you don't want to?"

Jin Miao held the phone between her shoulder and cheek, reached under the tap to get water to wash her hands, and listened absentmindedly.

"I also brought your little brother with me. His name is Xiaoxi. He's such a cute kid, you'll love him!"

"I don't like children."

Yang Xiaoli was taken aback by Jin Miao's retort, then said, "You two should get to know each other better over time. After all, you're siblings, it's different. Besides, Mom came all this way just to see you. Can you bear to let Mom go back empty-handed?"

"I understand." Jin Miao couldn't stand her nagging anymore. "Where are you? At the school gate?"

"Hey! Yes! Yes! We'll be waiting for you right here."

Jin Miao hung up the phone, changed into a thick coat, gave some instructions to her senior in the lab, and went out. Yang Xiaoli was indeed waiting at the main entrance, with a little boy standing next to her, happily munching on a string of candied strawberries. His mouth, face, and hands were all dirty and sticky. Jin Miao frowned before she even got close.

Sure enough, there's a reason she doesn't like children.

"Hey, Little Stream, look! It's your older sister! Call her 'older sister'!"

Hello, sister!

The child called out in a drawn-out tone, and Jin Miao, not wanting to stoop to the child's level, reached out and patted his head: "Hello."

Yang Xiaoli stood there and smiled: "Then let's go in. Xiaoxi, would you like your sister to hold your hand?"

"good!"

Jin Miao is usually very quiet around people she doesn't know well. If Jin He were here today, she probably would have chatted away, "Brother, look, this is our library. There are so many books inside, several floors! But it's a pity you can only get in with a card. Oh, don't be disappointed. I borrowed a card from my roommate to take you in. And look, that's the gymnasium, and the swimming pool too! And this is the cafeteria. There's a really delicious vegetable ramen place there. I'll take you there later!"

But the people around her were different, so Jin Miao didn't bother to say much: "The library... this is the cafeteria, the playground..."

The school was too big, and the child got tired after walking for a while. He turned to Yang Xiaoli and asked for a hug. Yang Xiaoli looked at Jin Miao and awkwardly picked up the child.

“You didn’t come to me for no reason, so just tell me what you want. I have to go back to a meeting in a bit.”

"Little Miao, look at you, you child. Can't your mother come to visit you even when she has nothing else to do..."

"If you don't tell me, I'm leaving."

“Hey, hey…” Yang Xiaoli called out to her, “We went to see Xiaohe a couple of days ago. He might have some misunderstandings about Mom and doesn’t really want to talk to me. You know, your brother has always been very principled since he was little. Once he thinks something is right, not even eight oxen can pull him back.”

"But we're family, so please help me persuade him."

What advice did I give him?

“Xiaoxi is still his brother no matter what,” Yang Xiaoli said. “I’m also worried that your brother’s job might cause some inconvenience for Xiaoxi. You know that your brother’s reputation isn’t very good right now. I just want to get Xiaoxi into a better kindergarten so that when he starts school, people won’t find out that he is Jin He’s brother and he won’t be bullied.”

Jin Miao: "..."

“Oh dear, your brother is definitely not as outstanding as you are now. You went to a prestigious university and are a graduate student. You'll be a great doctor in the future. Look at your brother, he only dropped out of high school. With that kind of financial means, wouldn't it be great to send Xiaoxi to a prestigious university?” Yang Xiaoli seemed oblivious to Jin Miao’s increasingly unpleasant expression and continued to chatter on.

“Look at your brother. He works in public, but he only succeeds because of the face I gave him. Anyone that good-looking can be successful. It’s just that he’s useless and has ended up like this,” Yang Xiaoli said. “You know, this kid just can’t tell what’s important. It’s much more important for his younger brother to get into a good school. Anyway, he didn’t go to college…”

"Enough!" Xiao Miao shouted, startling Yang Xiaoli into shutting up.

"Why are you suddenly angry, you child?"

"Angry? You should be glad I don't have my scalpel with me right now, otherwise I could stab you both twenty or thirty times and still get the court to sentence you to minor injury!"

An Yi became much more obedient after that. He would basically fulfill all of Jin He's reasonable requests, and even if some requests were not so reasonable, he would still grit his teeth and fulfill them.

Sometimes after meals, Jin He would curl up in bed and read for a while. He wasn't usually allowed to exercise too much; at most, he'd be allowed to take a walk, but only when his stomach was unbearably bloated after eating.

So now he was curled up in bed, engrossed in reading an all-English edition of Harry Potter, with an oxygen tube under his nose. An Yi sat at the foot of the bed, gently massaging his feet until they were warm. He then went to the bathroom to wash his hands before coming back to kiss Jin He: "What are you looking at?"

"Harry Potter"

"Didn't you see it before?"

Jin He didn't even look up: "Shall I look at it again...?"

An Yi was about to juice an orange for Jin He when he heard the door suddenly open. Jin He looked up and was amused.

"What's wrong? Your lips are pouting so much you could hang an oil bottle on them."

Jin Miao walked in with a dark face, closing the door behind her, and said in a muffled voice, "It's nothing."

When An Yi saw Jin Miao arrive, he silently took out another orange from the bag.
