It's impossible to take it down!

Manlin was completely shocked after entering the city; the layout here was completely different from when he left Shadow City to guard the watchtower.

As expected of General Mo Yuan!

He actually demolished most of the houses in the city and turned the entire place into a simple fortress. The remaining scraps could even be used to arm the soldiers!

Every street here is guarded by personnel. Any trained soldier can use the traps and terrain to fight three or even five enemies at once!

“This place has changed so much…” Manlin told his team members to put down their weapons and followed Klin toward the city lord’s mansion.

“Yes!” Klin nodded: “General Mo Yuan seems to care a lot about this pardon. He sent the weak to the front lines to wear them down, while deploying the real elite troops in the city.”

"Use the time delayed at the front to allow the city to rest and recuperate."

Klin pointed to the various streets, where the houses were completely destroyed, but this was the perfect place for urban warfare!

"He said that all the knights would find it difficult to move an inch in the city, and his mission was to capture the sons of various families alive in exchange for a pardon."

"He is conducting this battle with a specific purpose."

Manlin nodded. He didn't quite understand General Mo Yuan's actions. If he cared about being pardoned, did that mean he could be turned?

No!

He is someone who would rebel against the royal family, so what right does Elsie have to make him submit?

"Have we arrived at the city lord's mansion?" Manlin asked.

"The city lord's mansion? No, that's now called the fortress center by the general." Klin pointed in a certain direction, while also finding a sentry post on the map.

After checking the tokens, the sentry directed them to another post.

Manlin felt afraid. The entire fortress was quiet, but every now and then soldiers would emerge from the shadows to check their identities.

"Don't be nervous, getting lost is normal. General Mo Yuan deliberately designed this place as a maze to make urban warfare more chaotic." Klin pointed to himself: "Stay close!"

Gradually, as they approached the fortress's central hub, the number and rank of the soldiers appearing around them increased, and Manlin felt an inexplicable pressure.

“We’ve arrived…” Klin gazed at the steps of the fortress’s central hub.

After reporting to the guard at the door, he was told to wait, and then he went in to inquire.

Manlin was thinking about what to say when the guard came out again!

Wow, so fast! Could it be that General Mo Yuan is unwilling to receive me, or that he is not here?

"Manlin, the General has been waiting for a long time, please come in!"

The guard's words made Manlin's heart stop!

"Wait, only one of you can go in!"

Manlin glanced at the team members behind him, then silently stepped onto the stairs, each step sounding like a death knell.

He sensed this was a road leading to a graveyard. What should he say if he actually went in? Would he die? Certainly! Should he run now? Run!!

“No…” Manlin stopped in his tracks. He was now standing in front of the gate, which was tightly closed and waiting for him to push it open.

He placed his hand on it, but at one moment he felt that the door was covered in blood, including the filthy blood on his palm that he could not wipe away, and he heard a shriek like that of a banshee!

"Creak—"

He slowly pushed open the door, and in the dim and quiet room, he could clearly hear his own heartbeat.

He gazed at the only candle in front of him, and in the candlelight was General Mo Yuan writing a letter.

With his gray hair, he resembled an old man nearing his end, but his imposing physique did not signify his inability to resist!

"stare--"

Manlin was startled, his heart almost stopped, as he suddenly realized that there was a squad of fully armed soldiers on both sides of him!

They all remained silent, their calm gazes fixed on him, like sharp swords ready to be drawn at any moment, awaiting only General Mo Yuan's command.

These are the elite guards, the real killers!

Damn it! Could they be General Mo Yuan's former subordinates? Weren't these guys executed for treason?

A sound came from the corner.

Manlin's gaze fell there, and in the dim light, he could only see a pile of bloody flesh.

Who is that?

“A traitor who tried to assassinate me attempted to use my head to surrender to the cadets.”

The voice came from ahead; it was General Mo Yuan!

He kept his head down as he wrote, while observing Manlin's every move.

“My men subdued him, and I personally skinned him alive…” Mo Yuan picked up the wine in front of him and took a sip.

He frowned, placed the written envelope on a candle to burn, and then threw the lit envelope into the trash can.

"You've got some nerve!" Mo Yuan sneered as he drew his mithril dagger and walked over.

"What, you want my head too?"

Manlin's teeth chattered as he quickly pulled out a dagger hidden in his clothes, but before he could even grip it, Mo Yuan slapped it away!

"!"

He froze instantly, and the soldiers around him drew their swords and placed them against his neck. A chill ran through him.

"Slap—" Mo Yuan slapped Manlin's cheek with his dagger: "If you don't dare to swing your knife, what are you doing?"

"Ugh—" The lump of flesh in the corner let out a painful whimper.

Manlin seemed to have already guessed his fate! To die in such a humiliating and painful way!?

Is it too late to surrender?

"Ha, hahahaha..." Mo Yuan suddenly grinned and laughed wildly.

"you……"

"You were sent by Elsie, weren't you?"

"!!!" Manlin was stunned.

“At the front lines, I saw the knightly orders of all the families, except for the Tilan family. Yesterday, I heard a short, sharp bell ringing from the south, and that's when I guessed it.” Mo Yuan sheathed his dagger.

He walked back to the table, picked up the bottle and took a few more sips, then waved to the soldiers to release Manlin.

"How interesting. The royal family wants my head, and now I have to curry favor with those nobles just to survive." Mo Yuan stomped on the envelope in the trash can.

The sparks shone brightly in the darkness...

"Burn...burn...the last light before dawn."

"Heh..." He finished his drink in one gulp and said, "I've never met Elsie. What kind of person is she?"

"The flank tactic is good, but that was a flaw I deliberately left. In a real battlefield, it wouldn't be like that."

"Elsie may be quite good, but in the grand scheme of things, she's just a tool..."

“She isn’t!” Manlin retorted loudly, “I am willing to fight for her, to make a final struggle before dawn, like the cry of a blue moon butterfly before it emerges from its cocoon!”

"We might die at the moment of breaking free from our cocoons, we might die for her, we might never achieve fame... I've had enough, I've lived enough, I want to make a move..."

"I want... the Saint Yaluo flower to bloom at my grave..."

Manlin knelt down, his head bowed: "I..."

"I betrayed you, the assassination failed, please just kill me quickly!"

"Ha! Kill you?" Mo Yuan shook his head.

"I should worship you!"
