During the days he was unconscious, Chen Mengmeng tirelessly wiped his body every day, spoke to him softly, and used her warmth to wake him from his slumber.
Finally, one morning, sunlight streamed through the window and fell on Xu Wenhua's face. He slowly opened his eyes and the first thing he saw was that face that had captivated him.
At that moment, all the long-suppressed emotions surged out like a flood bursting its banks, and could no longer be contained.
From that day on, their relationship quickly heated up and they became very close.
However, at this moment, Chen Mengmeng suddenly looked worried and asked, feigning sadness, "Then what about your fiancée?"
Upon hearing this, Xu Wenhua was slightly taken aback, but then firmly embraced the person in his arms and made a promise gently and solemnly.
“I had absolutely no feelings for her to begin with. Over the years, I’m sure she’s come to that conclusion by now.”
"When I get home, I will immediately propose to break off the engagement." After saying this, he gazed deeply into Chen Mengmeng's eyes, his eyes filled with sincerity and determination.
"I'm scared!" Chen Mengmeng looked at Xu Wenhua with teary eyes.
"What if your family doesn't agree to annul the engagement? What if your family doesn't like me?" Chen Mengmeng asked nervously.
"Silly girl, you're so good, how could my family not like you? How could they disagree?" Xu Wenhua gently wiped away her tears.
"You and your fiancée have been engaged for so many years, do you think she will agree to break off the engagement? What if she doesn't agree?" Chen Mengmeng asked him softly, looking at him expectantly.
“I have no feelings for her, and she knows that. After all this time, if she had any self-awareness, she should have agreed. Otherwise, dragging this out won’t do her any good.” A cold glint flashed in Xu Wenhua’s eyes.
On the morning of Lunar New Year's Eve, before the sky was fully bright, Shen Junqi and Qian Ahua got up early.
They quickly washed up, ate breakfast, and prepared to head to the Xu family's house.
"Mom! Are we going just the two of us? Isn't Dad coming?" Shen Junqi asked, looking towards home.
“Your dad is asleep, you can’t be woken up by thunder. And he told me before he went to bed yesterday that he’s not going to get involved in this matter and that we should handle it ourselves,” Qian Ahua said irritably.
Shen Junqi's eyes were filled with embarrassment. "What about my brother?"
"You don't know your sister-in-law is pregnant. She took him back to her parents' house last night." Qian Ahua's face was full of smiles when she talked about her daughter-in-law's pregnancy.
Shen Junqi didn't say anything more; there was no point in saying anything more.
For Shen Junqi, the name Xu Wenhua has now become an indelible pain in her heart.
He has been away from home for a long time.
The resentment in Shen Junqi's heart burned like a raging fire, growing ever stronger. She was determined to go to the Xu family on this special day to demand an explanation.
"Junqi, are you really going?" Qian Ahua frowned as she looked at her daughter's stubborn expression, her voice filled with deep worry.
Shen Junqi gritted her teeth, nodded forcefully, and answered resolutely, "Mom, I must go! Xu Wenhua hasn't come home for so long, without even sending a word. Are we just going to keep waiting like this, without knowing anything? I'm not willing to accept that!"
Seeing her daughter's resolute attitude, Qian Ahua knew that any further persuasion would be futile.
She sighed softly, her eyes filled with helplessness and heartache, and finally nodded.
When they arrived at the Xu family's door, they found the gate tightly closed, and the surrounding households were already up making breakfast, creating a lively atmosphere.
Shen Junqi took a deep breath and went up to knock on the door.
After a while, the door slowly opened, and Xu's mother appeared before them.
They were having breakfast in the main room when they saw Shen Junqi's family suddenly arrive. Their expressions instantly darkened, and their eyes revealed a clear displeasure.
"Hey, isn't this Junqi? What's up? It's Chinese New Year, everyone else is busy preparing for their New Year's Eve dinner at home!"
"You guys are really something, actually coming here. You're not going to celebrate the New Year," Mrs. Xu said, glancing sideways with a half-smile on her lips, her words filled with sarcasm.
Shen Junqi clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deep into her palms, but she still tried her best to control the raging anger in her heart. After taking a deep breath, she tried to keep her voice calm.
"Uncle, Aunt, I'm sorry to bother you. I came here today to ask if Wenhua will be able to come home after so long since he hasn't been home. I wonder when he will have leave to visit his family and be able to come back?"
Mr. Xu frowned slightly, a hint of impatience on his face. His tone was unusually cold: "How could we possibly know anything about Wenhua's affairs?"
“He’s a soldier, you know the special nature of soldiers. Sometimes when they’re on a mission, it’s not uncommon for them to not be able to go home for more than a year or two, but even five or six years.”
Upon hearing this, Shen Junqi felt a pang of sadness, and her eyes instantly welled up with tears.
She bit her lip, forcing back her tears, and choked out, "Uncle, you see, Wenhua is still my fiancé!"
"So much time has passed since we got engaged, and he still hasn't come back. Besides, as you know, I'm not young anymore..."
At this point, she could no longer control her emotions, and tears streamed down her face like a burst dam.
Xu's mother sneered, her tone laced with sarcasm: "Junqi, I'm not trying to be mean, but my son is a soldier. Soldiers' return dates are unpredictable. What do you mean by bringing your parents here today?"
"Are you here to force him into marriage? You've come to the wrong place. The army is busy, he can't come back, and there's nothing we can do."
Upon hearing this, Qian Ahua flew into a rage: "What do you mean by that? Your son hasn't come back to get married even though it's been a year or two since his engagement, and he's dragged my best friend into becoming an old maid."
"We're here today to find a solution, not to act so sarcastic and unhelpful."
Mr. Xu waved his hand impatiently: "Alright, alright, it's the New Year, stop making a fuss here. Wenhua didn't tell us about his situation in the army, so we don't know anything about it."
Shen Junqi felt a chill run down her spine when she saw the perfunctory attitude of Xu's parents.
She knew that it was impossible to get any results from asking today.
"Mom! Let's go back!" Shen Junqi stopped Qian Ahua, who was about to argue, and said to Xu's parents. "Uncle, Aunt, then we'll go back first," Shen Junqi said, fighting back tears, and pulled her mother outside.
"Old man, is it inappropriate for us to say this?" Mrs. Xu asked with a sigh as she sat down.
