Du Chenzhou sighed and closed his eyes.
After lying down for a short while, Du Chenzhou was notified that there was a dinner party that evening, and he needed to accompany the guests as a translator.
He slowly exhaled a breath of stale air, composed himself for the moment, got up, changed his clothes, went out, and followed Howard and Lusca to a designated place near the military district for dinner.
As soon as he got off the bus, Du Chenzhou glanced up and seemed to see a familiar figure in the crowd.
He paused for a moment, thinking he had misread it, and turned to ask Wu Linghua, who had come with them.
"Director Wu, may I ask which unit those people who got out of that car over there belong to?"
Director Wu glanced at him discreetly, with a hint of scrutiny, and said only one sentence—
“Those are our military factory workers.”
"The military factory..."
Director Wu followed Du Chenzhou's gaze and realized that the person he was talking about was Jiang Yunzhou.
"You two know each other?"
Du Chenzhou gave a somewhat bitter smile.
"I suppose we've met before."
He was also in Beijing, and he worked in a military factory.
Moreover, judging from their interactions, Jiang Yunzhou seems to hold a significant position in the team, and has even become quite close with his colleagues, appearing to have a very good relationship with them.
Du Chenzhou felt even more bitter.
Jiang Yunzhou has already settled down in Jiangcheng and has a formal job. Although Shu Ying is married and has children, as long as he is in Beijing and by Shu Ying's side, there is at least a glimmer of hope.
And what about him?
My current job is only temporary, my status is awkward, and I don't even have anywhere to go.
Comparing the two sides, Du Chenzhou felt even more useless.
His eyes darkened, revealing an indescribable sense of inferiority.
He ate his meal without tasting it, and the translator was also distracted, missing countless sentences and having to ask the other person to repeat them, which made both sides somewhat unhappy.
Fortunately, Howard and Lusca didn't blame him. They even explained that he was just too tired from working with them all day and couldn't concentrate, which is why he made a mistake.
On the way back, Howard and Lusca couldn't help but express their concern for Du Chenzhou.
"Zhou, you seem out of sorts tonight. What's wrong? Are you too tired?"
Du Chenzhou was at a loss for words.
They are friends, but their friendship hasn't reached the point where they can confide in each other.
Moreover, both of them are foreigners and will soon be returning to their own countries. We will never see each other again, so there's no point in saying anything more.
Du Chenzhou sighed inwardly, shook his head, and pinched his brow, pretending to be very tired.
"Yes, I probably didn't sleep well last night. I feel a little tired today. I'm really sorry I couldn't translate properly for you."
Upon hearing this, Howard and Lusca quickly waved their hands.
"It's alright, it's alright. I'm sorry to have troubled you today. Please get some rest when you get back. I won't bother you again if anything else comes up today."
The two politely escorted Du Chenzhou to the door, said goodbye to him, and then went back to their own rooms.
Howard and Lusca kept their promise and did not contact Du Chenzhou again after returning home. Instead, they focused on organizing the confidential information on their own.
When Du Chenzhou went out to fetch water, he saw two guards standing at the door, armed to the teeth, looking on high alert at all times.
It seems the documents they compiled were highly confidential.
Du Chenzhou only thought about it briefly, his gaze lingering on it for long, before returning to his room after fetching the water.
But no sooner had they closed the door than someone knocked on it.
Du Chenzhou opened the door, completely bewildered, only to find two more guards standing at his doorstep.
Du Chenzhou peeked out and saw that the two guards who were standing at the door of Howard and Lusca's house were still there and seemed to be fine.
That shouldn't be because something happened to Howard and Lusca.
"What are you doing...?"
Du Chenzhou was completely bewildered.
The two guards didn't say anything, they just saluted him expressionlessly.
"Comrade Du Chenzhou, please come with us."
Seeing that he probably wouldn't get any information out of him, Du Chenzhou could only follow along in a daze.
As he walked, he kept wondering what he had done wrong.
After thinking about it for a while, I still couldn't come up with an answer.
These past two days, besides accompanying Howard and Lusca as their translator, he's just had dinner with them in the evenings, then come back and go straight to sleep... that's about it.
Du Chenzhou was led to a conference room.
Upon opening the door, Xie Zhiyan, Division Commander Du, and Brigade Commander Zeng were all present.
He had met these two before; they were both high-ranking leaders.
Xie Zhiyan was sitting next to the two leaders.
Today, Xie Zhiyan was dressed in a military uniform, looking very smart. The epaulets on his shoulders, symbolizing his military rank, shone brightly, reflecting a dignified light.
Du Chenzhou's throat tightened involuntarily, and he frowned with some worry.
This is quite a grand spectacle!
He walked hesitantly to the chair opposite the table where the two leaders were sitting, but hesitated for a moment before sitting down.
"What are you two doing?"
Neither of the two leaders made a statement yet, so Xie Zhiyan spoke on their behalf.
Xie Zhiyan's gaze was sharp as a sword. He looked Du Chenzhou up and down without making a sound, and his eyes fell on his face to observe his subtle expressions.
He got straight to the point—
"I've invited you here today to cooperate with the investigation into the pocket watch."
"Comrade Du Chenzhou, please explain in detail how you arrived at the border battlefield."
"Please note that we need you to describe the cause and effect, as well as the course of action, in detail."
The three people sitting in front of him were all very serious. Du Chenzhou was already nervous enough, and Xie Zhiyan's blunt questioning made his heart beat faster for no reason.
He silently calmed his racing heart while trying to speak calmly.
"I already explained all of this at the police station. Is there any other problem?"
Xie Zhiyan remained calm and composed, without the slightest fluctuation: "The investigation needs to be thorough, please cooperate."
Du Chenzhou nodded; there was no other way.
He took a deep breath and, as Xie Zhiyan had asked, recounted in detail all the causes, consequences, and routes he remembered, without holding anything back.
"As for why I woke up on the battlefield, it was because I was mistakenly captured by those two Yue people. I almost lost my life there, but unexpectedly, the people who captured me suddenly died, and I was lucky enough to save my life."
"Everything I've said above is true, without any concealment. I hope you leaders will believe me!"
Xie Zhiyan exchanged glances with Commander Du and Brigade Commander Zeng.
When Xie Zhiyan returned from the border battlefield, he had already submitted a report, which detailed the situation on the battlefield at that time.
Even the report submitted by the company responsible for cleaning up the battlefield later stated that they did not find the bodies of the two Yue people that Du Chenzhou mentioned during the cleanup process.
