Wang Zhande looked at the person on the hospital bed, his voice tinged with helplessness.

"The doctor said you might not wake up, but I don't believe it. How many times have we escaped death on the front lines? You'd better wake up quickly, otherwise your beautiful sister-in-law might really be kidnapped."

Wang Zhande looked up at the ceiling, then thought about what his colleagues at work thought of Shu Ying.

"Everyone says my sister-in-law is a wonderful person. We used to have a lot of misunderstandings about her, but after getting to know her today, we realize that she has had a tough time too."

He kept muttering to himself, unable to stay still: "And your two children are so cute and well-behaved, Yueyue is just like a little sister to me. I even want a daughter now. You're not even awake to watch over these two precious darlings? Your heart can't really be made of iron, can it?"

A series of hurried footsteps sounded outside. Wang Zhande subconsciously shut his mouth and turned his head to look. Through the glass in the door, he saw Shu Ying outside.

Just as she was about to open the door and come in, Wang Zhande sprang to his feet.

I wonder if his sister-in-law heard what he just said to the commander.

Although he said some nice things, Wang Zhande felt somewhat embarrassed.

Seeing him like a cannonball, Shu Ying suddenly became alert and subconsciously glanced behind her, but there was nothing there.

She placed the things she had brought on the table and asked Wang Zhande, "What's wrong? Did something happen just now?"

She vaguely heard Wang Zhande talking to Xie Zhiyan and thought he had already woken up.

Wang Zhande's body was stiff, and the smile on his face looked even more like a grimace.

He grinned and waved his hands.

"No, no, I just heard footsteps in the hallway. I thought it was the doctor coming. Why did you come so early, sister-in-law? The child is still at home. You can rest a little longer."

Anyway, they didn't have anything to do at night. Shu Ying had already been guarding this place all day, and even an iron body couldn't withstand such a lot of work.

Shu Ying walked around to Xie Zhiyan's hospital bed, lifted his eyelids with one hand to look at him: "Yueyue and Yangyang are already asleep. They can't rest well lying at home. Why don't you come over and relieve them? Is he alright?"

Wang Zhande's face immediately returned to normal: "Not yet. The doctor came by in the middle of the journey and only said that he needs to be observed in the hospital for a while longer. We won't have any specific news until the doctor starts work tomorrow."

Xie Zhiyan's situation was rather special, since he was injured on the head. The hospital didn't dare to be careless and had someone come to check on him three times a day.

Shu Ying glanced at him and understood what was going on. Xie Zhiyan's head was no longer so hot, so the fever must have gone down.

She took out the handmade shortbread she had brought back from home.

"Thank you for your hard work today. You've made several trips back and forth and helped take care of the children. I bought a few boxes of handmade shortbread when I came from Shanghai. It's a local specialty. Please take it back and try it."

Wang Zhande saw that Shu Ying was holding a long row of red boxes. The packaging of the pastries was very high-end, with exquisite patterns, and they looked expensive.

Wang Zhande was flattered and shook his head: "No, no, no, this is all we should do. Sister-in-law, don't worry about it. The commander is usually very good to us."

Shu Ying was adamant and shoved the pastry into his hand without saying a word.

"His kindness to you is his own business. I don't know what you like. It's all from my heart, so please don't mind."

Wang Zhande stood as straight as a young poplar tree, almost ready to lay his heart out to show his loyalty to Shu Ying.

"Of course not, thank you sister-in-law. I'll accept the gift and share it with the brothers tonight."

Shu Ying smiled; in fact, a box of handmade shortbreads wasn't worth much money.

She bought this before the Shu family's accident, and it's been kept in her space recently, which has extended its shelf life.

There's still so much of this stuff; she and her children can't possibly eat it all. It's better to use it as a gift when things get tough, since it's a local specialty of Shanghai that you can't find anywhere else.

"Okay, go back and get some rest. It is indeed a bit late today. If you have training tomorrow, then go about your business. I will take care of things at the hospital. Thank you for your help."

Shu Ying's few light words almost made Wang Zhande feel like he was floating on air.

An embarrassed smile appeared on his face, and he scratched the back of his head somewhat awkwardly with one hand, a blush appearing on his dark skin.

My sister-in-law's voice is so sweet and gentle.

No wonder the leader treasures the pocket watch with his sister-in-law's photo so much. Why didn't he envy the leader so much before?

Unfortunately, the pocket watch is lost; I can't let my sister-in-law know about this.

When Shu Ying saw Wang Zhande standing there dumbfounded, she thought that the smile she had forced out earlier had frightened him, so she immediately stopped smiling.

She doesn't smile much normally, and people who don't know her might think she has a sour expression.

But in reality, she mostly just spaced out or daydreamed.

In addition, Gao Jie had previously spoken ill of Shu Ying, saying that Shu Ying was born with a mean expression. If she hadn't been lucky enough to be born into the Shu family, she would have been beaten countless times for that sour face.

With the mindset of fighting to the end against her cousin's family, Shu Ying was even less likely to force a smile.

She looked at the streetlights outside. The road there had been fairly bright, but she didn't know what time the streetlights inside the compound would be turned off.

She made way for her, saying, "It's getting late, you should go home and get some rest too."

Wang Zhande happily held the pastry: "Then I'll head back first, sister-in-law. If you need anything here, just let me know. My brothers and I will come back tomorrow when we have time. Thank you for your hard work tonight."

When Xie Zhiyan was seriously injured, several of them would take turns looking after him.

This time, it just so happened that Shu Ying came to join the army. Although they could get some rest, Wang Zhande felt a little guilty.

Shu Ying waved at him, her voice much softer: "Let's go."

Wang Zhande nodded and left, looking rather simple-minded.

The ward finally quieted down. Shu Ying closed the window and sat down next to Xie Zhiyan again.

The ward was quiet; Shu Ying could even hear her own heartbeat.

She held a glass of water in her hand, letting go of the day's fatigue.

"Ever since I met you, you've always had this stern face. Why has no one ever said anything about you? Everyone's been talking about me."

Shu Ying tilted her head, looking intently at Xie Zhiyan: "Is it because I lack the uprightness you possess?"
