Chapter 35 Mother Song's Emergency Treatment

It was very late when Song Yan finally got home.

Hearing the door open, Lin Shuangyu rushed over, helped him take off his coat and hang it up, and then brought him a glass of warm water.

Song Yan glanced at her, his expression slightly cold: "What are you doing here?"

Lin Shuangyu was taken aback.

To put it nicely, Song Yan was always polite and courteous; to put it bluntly, he was rigid and boring.

Lin Shuangyu and he had been in a relationship for two years. During that time, she had given him many hints, but he hadn't reacted at all.

He also wouldn't allow Lin Shuangyu to come to his house without his permission.

“I haven’t seen you for several days,” Lin Shuangyu said, sounding aggrieved. “And my aunt said you haven’t been acting quite right lately, so I’m worried about you.”

Song Yan loosened his tie and collapsed wearily into the sofa.

He didn't hear what Lin Shuangyu said.

His mind was filled with replays of everything that had happened with Si Yuan that afternoon.

Lin Shuangyu sat down next to him and asked considerately, "What's wrong?"

Song Yan rubbed his temples in frustration and said, "Xiao Yuan said she has depression."

Lin Shuangyu's expression froze.

Her eyes turned cold, and she silently gritted her teeth.

No wonder Song Yan's mind is now entirely on her.

They still resort to sensationalism as always.

"Depression?"

She stepped forward and sat down next to Song Yan: "How could this be... Wasn't her personality usually very good? There was nothing unusual about her coming back this time."

"I'd like to know too."

Song Yan's Adam's apple bobbed; he hadn't believed it at all.

But Jiang Wang's words that afternoon had given him a wake-up call.

“She stayed abroad for five years. I don’t know if something happened during those five years… I plan to check tomorrow. If something did happen, I can’t let her suffer.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Shuangyu remained silent for a few seconds, then suddenly raised his head, his eyes filled with mixed hesitation. "Ayan, there's something... I don't know if I should say it."

Song Yan opened his eyes and looked directly at her.

“I ran into Siyuan at the mall a while ago. Remembering all the fights we had back in school, I pulled her aside and apologized to her. I told her that I’ve always felt guilty and even been diagnosed with depression. I told her that she’s only been taking care of me because she feels sorry for me. I never expected that she would remember my illness…”

Song Yan frowned slightly: "What do you mean by that?"

Lin Shuangyu sighed: "She probably thinks that only by saying that she has depression can she get you to pay more attention to her."

Song Yan lowered his eyes and began to think seriously.

Lin Shuangyu could tell from his expression that he already had some doubts.

She continued to fuel the flames: "Think about it, kids will follow suit when they see others get what they want in a certain way."

These words were like a bucket of cold water, unexpectedly splashed into Song Yan's heart.

Si Yuan has always been immature in Song Yan's eyes.

That's why they can be easily tricked into following others.

"I always thought that Xiaoyuan would grow up and stop being so childish."

Lin Shuangyu quickly followed up on his words, her tone becoming even softer: "Don't be too angry. Maybe she's just too afraid of losing you. After all, you were so good to her back then, and now that you've suddenly put your heart into someone else, it's no wonder she's panicking."

Song Yan didn't reply, but just leaned back on the sofa and raised his hand to press his throbbing temples.

The streetlights outside shone through the thin curtains, casting flickering light and shadow on his face, making it impossible to discern his emotions.

He really didn't want to believe that his obedient little sister, who used to always follow him around, would turn out like this.

He suddenly felt that he didn't understand her at all.

Seeing that Song Yan was in a bad mood today, Lin Shuangyu stroked his hand with her fingers: "Ayan, don't think about her, it's so late..."

Before she could finish speaking, Song Yan's phone suddenly rang.

Song Yan snapped out of his daze, pushed Lin Shuangyu's hand away, and answered the call.

After a moment of silence, Song Yan's expression suddenly darkened, though he didn't know what was said on the phone.

He grabbed his coat and wrapped it around himself, then rushed out the door before even properly putting on his shoes.

Lin Shuangyu chased after him and tugged at his sleeve: "Ayan, what happened?"

Song Yan didn't stop walking, but turned around and said, "My mother is sick."

——

Si Yuan had just touched the pillow when the bedside phone rang sharply.

She rubbed her eyes and answered the phone. Her father's urgent voice came through the receiver: "Xiaoyuan, can you come to the hospital? Your mother's condition is not good."

Si Yuan frowned in surprise: "I..."

“Your mother loves you so much, why don’t you spend some time with her?”

Si Yuan's fingers, gripping the phone, turned white.

She's someone who can't be decisive about everything.

Undeniably, Song's mother had indeed been kind to her, albeit with a mixture of genuine and feigned kindness.

When faced with matters of life and death, Si Yuan should know exactly what he should do.

She replied in a hoarse voice, "I'll be right there."

After hanging up the phone, she went downstairs.

In the darkness, the sound of a taxi horn broke the silence.

Si Yuan stared out the car window, her heart pounding.

——

When Si Yuan arrived at the hospital, she followed the directions from the nurses' station.

Outside the emergency room, Song's father sat in a chair, his hand supporting his forehead.

The chairman of the Song family in Haicheng, a man as imposing as a mountain in Si Yuan's eyes, looked utterly exhausted just sitting there.

Song Yan leaned against the wall, and when he heard the noise, he looked up at her.

His gaze was somewhat blank.

Si Yuan avoided his gaze and walked straight towards Song's father.

She crouched down and habitually called out to him, "Dad, what happened?"

Song's father's voice was hoarse and somber: "This afternoon, your mother said she had chest pain, and then she fainted in the evening. The doctor said it was heart failure and she is currently being resuscitated."

Song's mother has always been in poor health, especially her heart, but she has always taken good care of herself and it has never gotten this serious.

Could it be because of what happened to me a few days ago?

Si Yuan dared not even think about it.

"Dad, it will be alright."

Much later, Song's mother still hadn't come out of the operating room.

Song Yan told his father to go and rest first, and to inform him immediately if there was any news.

Si Yuan also advised him, "Yes, you two shouldn't both overwork yourselves."

Song's father reluctantly agreed.

After seeing off Song's father, only Song Yan and Si Yuan remained in the hallway.

Si Yuan noticed that her hands were shaking.

She sat down and sighed wearily.

Song Yan sat beside her.

Si Yuan didn't look at him and got up to leave.

But Song Yan spoke first.

"Xiao Yuan, at a time like this, you won't even spend a little time with your brother?"

Si Yuan's lips curled into a cold smile. She didn't sit down. The green light from the emergency room shone on her face, stinging her eyes.

Did he consider himself her brother the moment he threw away her medicine?

“I came back because of my dad’s phone call, because we used to be a family.”

Song Yan closed his eyes briefly: "It will be the same in the future!"

"It can't be."

Si Yuan looked back at him, remembering that his mother was still lying inside.

She suppressed her harsh words and tried her best to speak to him calmly.

"I may be a stain on the Song family, so from now on, I will stay far away from you. You no longer need to pretend to be tolerant and merciful towards me."
