Chapter 119 Pretending to be a God

In the middle of the night, when most of the villagers were already in a deep sleep, Jiang Yuan and Xie Wanniang quietly got up from the earthen bed.

The two slept from dusk until midnight, and now they are both very energetic.

Jiang Yuan tiptoed out of the house and quickly tossed two sugar cakes to the two dogs that had heard the noise.

The two dogs had been fed by Jiang Yuan quite often before. Although the feeding time and food were different this time, they still wagged their tails and ate happily.

While they were eating, Jiang Yuan and Xie Wanniang quickly opened the courtyard gate and went out.

Unbeknownst to the two, Aunt Ge, who lived in the landlord's room, had already opened her old eyes.

The old lady lay motionless on the kang (a heated brick bed), her granddaughter sleeping soundly in her arms.

She didn't ask any questions, nor did she stop Jiang Yuan and Xie Wanniang from leaving.

Of course, she didn't know that Xie Wanniang was also among those who went out; she only thought it was Jiang Yuan, who was quite skilled, who had sneaked out.

The old lady wasn't worried that Jiang Yuan would harm the villagers. Although she hadn't known Jiang Yuan for long, she still had a good understanding of what kind of person he was.

Thinking of the incident that morning when Atai was chased and scolded by his aunt, the old lady sighed with mixed feelings.

There is another family in the village with a similar situation to her family and Atai's family. However, the three children in that family not only have their elderly grandparents who are still willing to take care of them, but also their uncles, aunts, and other relatives who will farm for them for free and bring them food from time to time so that they don't go hungry.

The uncles, aunts, and fathers of those three children are not like Atai's eldest uncle and aunt, who are so black-hearted that they are simply unbearable to look at.

Regardless of the complex emotions in the old lady's heart, Xie Wanniang and Jiang Yuan soon arrived at Uncle Atai's house.

Uncle Atai was also a hunter, and his family originally kept dogs. However, after they occupied Atai's house, his dogs and pigs were moved to Atai's house.

The reason for the transfer was simple—Atai's aunt couldn't bear to see her daughter-in-law idle, but she was also worried about leaving her with chickens that didn't lay eggs regularly, so she left the dog and pig with her.

Since their family hadn't actually separated, they were just temporarily moving into Atai's house so their little family could stay there. Atai's aunt wasn't worried at all that her son and daughter-in-law could keep their dog and pigs.

Thanks to her, Jiang Yuan and Xie Wanniang's infiltration operation went very smoothly.

The two climbed over the wall and busied themselves for a while. Before leaving, they handed Atai four grain cakes that Xie Wanniang had specially left for them through the window of the woodshed.

Atai thanked the two men in a low voice, and then asked them if they had any medicine.

Perhaps it was because his fear and dread had accumulated to a certain extent, but his younger sister, Xiaomei, who had been beaten quite a bit before, suddenly developed a fever this time.

Fortunately, her fever wasn't too high. When Xie Wanniang and Jiang Yuan arrived, her temperature was still within a manageable range.

Xie Wanniang took her pulse through the window, then gave her some emergency antipyretic and sedative pills, instructing her to take them in two doses according to the dosage.

"You should be free by tomorrow morning, then I'll give you a proper check-up."

The reason she didn't do it now was twofold: firstly, Xiaomei's condition wasn't serious, and secondly, it was too dark for her to find enough torches or oil lamps to examine Xiaomei's injuries in the dark.

Anyway, there was no bleeding, and no bones, head, or internal organs were injured. If we just hold on, we can make it to tomorrow when things settle down.

After the two left, Atai first shared the four grain cakes that Xie Wanniang had brought with Xiaomei. Then he took out the pills that Xie Wanniang had given him and asked Xiaomei to swallow the two pills she was supposed to take that night with cold water.

After seeing Jiang Yuan and Xie Wanniang, Xiao Mei felt hopeful and her spirits were already a little better than before. Now, after eating the cakes and medicine given to her by Xie Wanniang, she immediately felt much better.

Of course, this was mainly because she wasn't hungry anymore, and after taking the medicine, she gave herself a certain degree of psychological suggestion.

It wasn't until about half an hour later, when Atai noticed that her forehead wasn't as hot and her breathing wasn't as labored, that she truly began to recover.

Jiang Yuan tiptoed back to Aunt Ge's house and used the same trick as before, giving each of the two dogs a piece of candy.

While the two dogs were engrossed in eating their pancakes, Xie Wanniang and Jiang Yuan quickly slipped back to their room, took off their shoes, climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed), and continued sleeping.

Only when there were no other noises coming from the courtyard did Aunt Ge turn over and try to fall asleep again.

The next morning, Xie Wanniang and Jiang Yuan got up early.

The two washed up while waiting for the exciting drama to unfold in the house two doors down.

To their surprise, it wasn't until they sat down at the table with Aunt Ge and her grandson that a loud scream, which they had been waiting for, finally came from Uncle Atai's house.

"They've finally arrived!" Xie Wanniang muttered to herself, but on her face she wore the same surprised expression as the two children.

The three of them turned their heads in unison, looking in the direction from which the sound came.

Finding they couldn't see anything through the courtyard wall, the three of them got up at the same time, opened the door, and ran towards Uncle Atai's house.

Jiang Yuan followed closely behind, saying, "Auntie, you put the food in the pot first, and I'll bring them back to eat after we've finished watching the excitement."

Aunt Ge looked helpless, but she still did as he said.

After putting away all the food, Aunt Ge locked the door and slowly went to Uncle Atai's house.

She didn't get there quickly enough, but because the two families lived close by, she managed to squeeze into the courtyard.

As for Xie Wanniang and the others who rushed over at the first moment, they are now standing firmly in front.

Two adults and two children stood in a row, enthusiastically enjoying the melon with the rest of the village.

Looking around, Aunt Ge saw that Atai's usually fierce aunt was now slumped like a lump of mud at the entrance of her house.

"Her face..."

"Shh!" Before Aunt Ge could finish speaking, a middle-aged woman standing in front of her nervously pressed down her raised hand.

Not only did the other party forbid Aunt Ge from pointing her finger at Aunt Atai, but they also nervously shushed her, saying, "Auntie, you can't point your finger like that."

She turned her head, lowered her voice, and said to Aunt Ge in a strange tone that was both frightened and excited, "I heard from Uncle Clan Chief that there are two bloody characters on her face: 'bad' and 'return'."

"And her husband and her two sons, each with a bloody handprint on their face, tsk tsk."

"Look at her roof, it's covered with dead chickens with their necks broken. Blood is dripping all over half the yard, oh my, it's terrifying."

Aunt Ge: ......
