"What?"
Sun Xiulian glanced nervously at the door, making sure it was tightly closed, before bringing her mouth close to Su Wantang's ear, her voice barely audible.
"I overheard her mother-in-law talking to Aunt Wang next door, saying... saying that raising a little girl is a waste of the family's resources, all she does is cry all day, she's so annoying..."
As Sun Xiulian spoke, she shuddered, her eyes filled with unconcealed terror.
"She said...she said it would be better to give it away sooner, so that...so she could get some money or food coupons to buy her youngest son a few bottles of good wine..."
That was a living, breathing human life! It was Liu Fen's own flesh and blood, born at great personal risk!
In that old hag's eyes, it wasn't even as good as a few bottles of cheap liquor!
Su Wantang said coldly, "This is going too far."
“That’s right!” Sun Xiulian nodded repeatedly. “I was shocked when I heard that. What kind of grandmother is that? That old lady even said that raising a girl is a money-losing business, and it’s better to get rid of her as soon as possible to save food.”
Su Wantang's brows furrowed tightly. She recalled the desperate look in Liu Fen's eyes when she came to her for help with her child, and the faint cries of that frail baby in its mother's arms.
"Where is Liu Fen? Does she know about this?"
"She probably doesn't know; she's still feeling weak these past few days."
Wen Yuzhen had just returned from buying groceries when she noticed Su Wantang's unusual expression and quickly went over to ask what was wrong. After hearing what had happened, this simple rural woman was also furious.
"What a tragedy! Even tigers don't eat their cubs, is this old woman's heart made of iron?"
Su Wantang didn't say anything more, put on her coat and walked out: "I'm going to talk about this."
"Xiao Tang, don't go," Wen Yuzhen said anxiously. "You're still in your postpartum period, your health is important. If you want to go, I'll talk to them!"
"You wait here, you rest well at home! I'll go tell them right away!" With that, Wen Yuzhen strode forward.
Liu Fen's house was in the back row, a rather old bungalow. As Wen Yuzhen walked to the door, she heard arguing coming from inside.
"Mom, where's Nannan? I just woke up and I can't see her." Liu Fen's voice was weak, but it was filled with obvious anxiety.
"I'm sleeping, why are you bothering me?" a rough, hoarse female voice replied impatiently.
"But I need to breastfeed her, she must be hungry..."
"If you're hungry, someone will take care of you. Why are you worrying about it?"
Wen Yuzhen frowned and knocked on the door.
The door was quickly opened, revealing a mean-looking face. Liu Fen's mother-in-law, Granny Li, was in her fifties, with a face full of fat and small eyes that revealed shrewdness and ruthlessness.
"Oh, isn't this Su Wantang's mother-in-law?" Granny Li immediately forced a fake smile. "What a rare guest."
"Yes, my daughter-in-law is in her postpartum period and it's inconvenient for her to come over and check on me."
As Wen Yuzhen spoke, she walked into the room and immediately saw Liu Fen sitting on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed). In just a few days, the woman had become emaciated, her face sallow, her eyes sunken, and she looked utterly listless.
"Auntie." Liu Fen's eyes lit up when she saw her, and she tried to get up, but Granny Li pressed her down.
"You're still weak, don't move around too much," Granny Li said with concern, but her hands were surprisingly strong.
Wen Yuzhen walked to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and sat down, taking Liu Fen's hand in hers. Her hand was cold and trembling slightly.
"How are you feeling? Do you have enough breast milk?"
"That's enough, that's enough..." Liu Fen nodded, but a hint of panic flashed in her eyes. "It's just that Nannan is acting a bit strange today. She's been sleeping the whole time and won't even drink milk..."
