Chapter 36 The Train to the Countryside - Let's Go!
Reading Settings
When Bai Nuo arrived at the meeting point, she exchanged the ticket given to her by the educated youth office for a train ticket to Kaiyuan City, Liaoning Province. She pulled her hat down a bit, lowered her head, and stood obediently on the platform waiting for the train.
There were already quite a few parents around who had come to send their children to the countryside. Each of them had big bags and small packages. The scene was quite lively. Some were reluctant to part with their children, some came with indifferent expressions, and some cried and wailed with resentment. You could see almost half of the different aspects of life here.
"Have you heard? That deputy director of the cabinet was sentenced to prison—just one peanut."
"Really? What kind of crime is this? It's that serious?"
"Of course it's serious. I heard they took a lot of things from their house that day, including two or three bankbooks, each with tens of thousands of yuan in them."
"No way, that much? I've never seen that much money in my entire life."
"That's right, how much must they have embezzled? And they even brought out a washing machine. You know what a washing machine is, right? It's the kind of machine that automatically washes clothes when you plug it in."
"I've heard of that, but you can't buy it anywhere else. I heard that it's only available at the Friendship Store, and it's sold exclusively to foreign guests."
“That’s right, that’s right. I heard that only those official government agencies have one. This is clearly embezzlement of state property. It’s no wonder this crime is so serious.”
Bai Nuo stood to the side with her head down, looking obedient and shy, but in reality, her ears were already perked up, listening intently to the gossip.
Of course she knew about those passbooks. Although these days you don't need a password to withdraw money from savings banks and credit unions, the passbooks still had names on them, so she didn't take them and put them in the washing machine. Anyway, no matter how they checked, they couldn't trace it back to her.
I didn't expect to hear about the follow-up results so soon after going to the countryside. That's good.
After waiting for about ten minutes, the train began to pull into the station. Bai Nuo quickly picked up her suitcase, hugged her cloth bag and small handbag to her chest, and walked forward with the crowd. Before she had even walked two meters, she was lifted into the air and could only see the back of the heads of the people in front of her even when she looked up.
Bai Nuo hugged the bag and cloth bag in his arms tightly with a blank expression, one hand gripping the handle of the suitcase tightly, his whole body exuding an aura of irritability and despair.
It's too difficult, being short and having short legs makes it even more difficult.
Finally, after much difficulty, she was led onto the train. Suppressing her anger, Bai Nuo expressionlessly searched for her seat.
There were special carriages for educated youth, but a carriage could seat many people. This train did not have that many educated youth, so it was not full. Some other passengers also moved into this carriage.
When Bai Nuo found her seat, she saw a woman around forty-five years old lying on the three-seater bench with her legs crossed. The woman had her eyes closed, but her legs kept twitching, making her intentions quite clear.
Looking around, some people had worried expressions on their faces, while others looked on with glee, waiting to see what would happen.
Already feeling annoyed from being jostled around, Bai Nuo pursed her lips slightly when she saw the old woman who was clearly planning to act like a rogue.
"Ma'am, please move aside, this is my spot."
The little girl looked quite young, wearing a blue work uniform with the collar of her white shirt turned up. She appeared well-mannered, obedient, and adorable. Although she was wearing a liberation cap and had her head slightly lowered so her face wasn't fully visible, it was clear that she was a very pretty girl. Even her voice had a sweet and gentle quality, though it still carried a touch of childishness, perhaps because of her young age.
The sound drew even more sympathy and concern from the onlookers.
However, no one moved.
Of course, the one lying down didn't move either.
"Excuse me, ma'am."
Bai Nuo kept her temper in check. She didn't want to cause trouble as soon as she boarded the train. If she attracted the attention of the train police, and they knew someone from the Xiang family, it would make her sister even more worried.
"What's all the noise about? How come young people these days don't know how to respect the elderly? Can't you see that I'm not feeling well? I'll just lie down for a while, what's wrong with that? I'll be at my stop soon. You little brat, you're so young, why don't you stand a little longer?"
With that Hebei accent, tell her we'll be at the station soon?
Also, these days, people in their forties call themselves old women?
You're trying to fool idiots!
"Oh!"
Bai Nuo chuckled and glanced behind her. She noticed that many people hadn't moved. She wondered if they were either blocking her way or waiting to watch the show. They were certainly quite idle.
Just then, the sound of the train doors slowly closing came from the other side. Bai Nuo put down her suitcase, then walked between two seats facing each other, reached out and opened the window first, then bowed slightly to the old lady.
Amidst the growing shock of the onlookers, one man grabbed the old woman by the front of her collar with one hand and by her waist rope with the other, lifting her horizontally and pointing her towards the car window.
Just as everyone, including the old lady, was still in shock, a light, delicate voice rang out.
"Come on, let's go!"
Then Bai Nuo threw the old woman out of the car window.
A muffled thud came from outside the car window.
Bai Nuo then quickly bent down and threw the two bags of luggage out of the car window, which hit the stunned old lady on the head.
Just then, the train slowly started moving, and a series of curses and shouts came from outside the window, but they disappeared after a short while.
The entire carriage was completely silent.
Bai Nuo took an old newspaper out of his pocket, spread it out on the seat, and then stepped on the newspaper to lift his suitcase high onto the overhead luggage rack.
