Chapter 202 Enemy Raid

The wind in northern Xinjiang seemed rougher than in Danzhou, scraping my face until it hurt terribly.

Jiang Yutang rubbed his slightly sore eyes and followed Cheng Lanzhou toward his main tent.

As she stepped into the tent, she thought of Cheng Daier and asked, "Where are my aunt and third brother?"

Cheng Lanzhou stepped forward and helped her take off her coat, her voice gentle: "They have already gone back to the accommodations I arranged to rest. You must be tired after a long day. Get some rest."

Jiang Yutang pressed the hand on her shoulder, feeling a warmth in her heart. She turned to look at Cheng Lanzhou, asking in a slightly coquettish tone, "What about you? Aren't you going to rest?"

Cheng Lanzhou shook his head, his expression turning serious: "I can't rest yet. The Northern Frontier is different from other places. We must deal with any emergency immediately and can't afford to be lax in the slightest."

Upon hearing this, the light in Jiang Yutang's eyes dimmed, and she responded somewhat dejectedly, "Oh..."

She originally wanted to spend more time with him and talk about her feelings, but she didn't expect that he still had to stay on duty.

But then she straightened her back and added earnestly, "You can rest assured and keep watch. We came here to help. I will go to the wounded soldiers' tents every day to help take care of the injured soldiers and do my best to reduce the burden on the camp."

Upon hearing this, Cheng Lanzhou remained silent for a long while.

He slowly stretched out his arms and gently embraced Jiang Yutang, resting his chin on the top of her head, his warm breath brushing against her ear, and whispered, "You don't have to force yourself to do so much. For me, as long as you are safe and sound by my side, that's enough."

The warm breath on her ear made Jiang Yutang relax. She wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest.

The next day at daybreak, Jiang Yutang got up and went to the wounded soldiers' tent.

After last night's wound cleaning and anti-inflammatory medication, the effects are already evident. Many soldiers' wounds have stopped festering, and the previously red and swollen edges have subsided somewhat, which is undoubtedly a sign of improvement.

Jiang Yutang became increasingly convinced of his judgment and instructed the military doctors to administer anti-inflammatory drugs to the soldiers on time.

Busy until noon, Jiang Huaiyu's voice came from outside the tent: "Little sister, it's time to eat!"

Jiang Yutang responded and followed Jiang Huaiyu toward the kitchen.

As soon as they arrived at the kitchen door, they saw Cheng Daier already waiting at the table.

On the table were a few bowls of simple food, a dish of pickled vegetables, and a bowl of bland wild vegetable soup.

Jiang Yutang washed her hands and sat down. Looking at the simple meal in front of her, she couldn't help but sigh softly.

Jiang Huaiyu smiled and comforted them, "Don't be fooled by how bad these dishes look; they taste pretty good once you get used to them."

"...Is that so?" Jiang Yutang twitched the corner of his mouth, his gaze falling on Cheng Daier, who was calmly picking up food with her chopsticks.

She also picked up a piece of wild vegetables with her chopsticks and put it in her mouth, but after chewing it a couple of times, she almost vomited.

At night, after finishing her duties at the military camp, Cheng Lanzhou went to her tent.

Jiang Yutang leaned against the bedside, watching him walk in, and couldn't help but ask, "When can we go back to Danzhou? Do we have to wait for a truce?"

Cheng Lanzhou walked to the bedside and sat down. After pondering for a long time, he slowly shook his head.

"A ceasefire is useless; we must completely defeat them. The enemy here is too vicious and unruly. If we let them retreat, they will come back soon, and then there will be widespread bloodshed."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Yutang sighed softly, tilted her head to look at him, and asked again, "Have you written to Mother and the others?"

"Yes, I wrote it."

Cheng Lanzhou stroked her hand and said gently, "I had someone send the letter over the night you arrived, so don't worry."

Jiang Yutang looked up at the ceiling of the tent, her eyes filled with longing.

“Our new house in Danzhou is finished, and there are still many empty rooms. We’re just waiting for you to come back and live together. Then the whole family will be reunited and we’ll never have to be separated again.”

Looking at her earnest and expectant face, Cheng Lanzhou felt a warmth in his heart and subconsciously leaned forward to gently kiss the corner of her lips.

He leaned slightly forward, his voice low and husky, with a hint of mockery, and asked, "Are you planning to reserve a few rooms for the children if you leave so many empty rooms?"

"Absolutely..."

Jiang Yutang responded subconsciously, but only realized the meaning behind his words as soon as she finished speaking.

Her cheeks flushed instantly. Annoyed and embarrassed, she raised her hand and lightly punched his shoulder, saying in a coquettish tone, "You're so indecent! Always saying such nonsense!"

Actually, she had thought about having children, but it was clearly too early to discuss the topic.

She turned her face away, not daring to look into Cheng Lanzhou's smiling eyes, but her heartbeat quickened uncontrollably.

Seeing the other person's increasingly smug smile, Jiang Yutang's temper flared up.

She reached out and grabbed Cheng Lanzhou's collar, but her claws touched the cold armor and she couldn't get any leverage. She could only use her fingers to hook into the gaps in the armor and forcefully pull him in front of her.

She mimicked Cheng Lanzhou's earlier actions, quickly pressing her lips to his, then tilting her head slightly, leaning close to his ear, and whispering harsh words.

"Don't get too cocky! Once the war is over, I'll cook you a nourishing soup every day. Don't let yourself become weak and powerless in just a couple of days, or you'll be unworthy of your prestigious general title!"

A warm breath brushed past her ear, carrying her unique sweetness, and Cheng Lanzhou's breathing instantly became somewhat heavy.

After a long pause, Cheng Lanzhou reluctantly pushed her away gently, covered the side of her face that had been kissed by her, and looked at her with a dark expression.

"If it weren't for the urgency of the current war, which cannot be delayed even for a moment, I would really like to punish you tonight."

Jiang Yutang playfully stuck out her tongue.

After the jokes, the two exchanged a few more words, and then Cheng Lanzhou got up and returned to his guard tent.

For the next month or so, life in the military camp was regular and busy.

Jiang Yutang diligently cared for the wounded soldiers every day without fail, and under her meticulous treatment, those soldiers who were originally infected with bacteria recovered one by one.

Several military doctors who had previously doubted her medical skills witnessed the soldiers' recovery process and were completely convinced.

Cheng Dai'er wasn't idle either. She noticed that the armory in the military camp was somewhat disorganized, and some weapons even had missing corners, so she quickly took them out and put them into service.

On the battlefield, weapons are a soldier's second life; how can they be taken lightly?

So she immediately joined the armory to help forge weapons and established a standardized requisition process, so that soldiers could quickly receive suitable weapons before going to the battlefield, greatly improving efficiency.

Cheng Lanzhou and Jiang Huaiyu were extremely busy, training soldiers and surveying the terrain while dealing with sporadic harassment from enemy forces on the border and formulating defense strategies.

The four men were like four ropes twisted together, all straining to protect the camp.

The group rarely met; aside from occasional meals, they could only briefly see each other before bed.

However, the peace was ultimately short-lived.

That afternoon, Jiang Yutang had just finished changing the dressing of the last wounded soldier when he suddenly heard deafening shouts of battle coming from outside the camp, followed by the clanging of weapons and the screams of soldiers.

A military doctor, his face ashen, shouted, "Oh no! It's an enemy attack!"
