Chapter 184 The Wedding Dress Was Destroyed
"Let's go!" Jiang Yutang shouted quickly, and everyone carried their things and went to meet them.
Cheng Lanzhou raised his hand to signal the group to stop, then dismounted swiftly and walked quickly to Lin Shi and Jiang Yutang.
Lin's eyes were already red, and she held his hand with trembling hands. Her lips opened and closed again, but all the words she wanted to say finally turned into a choked sob: "Be careful in everything!"
Cheng Lanzhou nodded vigorously, turning his gaze to Jiang Yutang, his deep eyes filled with tenderness.
Jiang Yutang turned around and raised her chin, gesturing to her three older brothers standing behind her, who had a bunch of things in their hands and at their feet.
"I thought about it and realized that two bags definitely wouldn't be enough, so I added some more things."
She stepped forward and pointed to each package, explaining everything from food to household items.
A warm feeling rose in Cheng Lanzhou's heart, and he reached out to gently pat the back of her hand: "Thank you for your trouble, Madam."
"We've been rushing all the way to the northern frontier. How long will it take to get there?" Cheng Dai'er suddenly asked, her voice full of worry.
Cheng Lanzhou replied, "If there are no unforeseen circumstances along the way, we should be able to arrive in about a month."
Jiang Huaiyu, who was in the group, could no longer contain herself and ran over to hug each of her family members.
Seeing the pile of packages on the ground, his eyes lit up, and he scoffed, "So much stuff? Did you empty the storeroom, little sister?"
"You still think it's too much?" Jiang Songzhi joked with a smile. "I wish I could move the whole shop to you so you wouldn't go hungry in the Northern Frontier."
Jiang Huaiyu scratched his head and chuckled, "That won't be necessary, it's enough."
The group chatted and laughed, but the atmosphere was permeated with a sense of sadness at parting.
Jiang Yutang walked to the front of the group. Most of the soldiers in the camp recognized her, and they all stood up straight when they saw her.
"My brave soldiers," her voice was gentle yet firm, "I have prepared some supplies for you, hoping they will be of help. I wish you a safe journey and a safe return! We await your triumphant return in Danzhou!"
"We will live up to your expectations! We will return victorious!"
The soldiers shouted in unison, their voices so loud that even the morning frost seemed to fall. The oppressive atmosphere of the past few days was largely dispelled by this burst of heroic spirit.
Cheng Lanzhou glanced at the gradually lightening dawn on the horizon and said seriously, "It's getting late, we should set off."
The farewell eventually came.
Jiang Yutang forced back her tears and forcefully raised her hand to wave goodbye.
Cheng Lanzhou looked at her affectionately, pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly, whispering in her ear, "Wait for me." Then he turned and mounted his horse.
Just as the group was about to set off, Jiang Huaiyu suddenly ran back from the queue and whispered some instructions to Jiang Yutang.
"Dair's wedding dress is ready. It's at the embroidery shop in the west of the city. Take some time to go with her to pick it up. Also, keep a close eye on Gu Wenxiao in Danzhou. Be careful in everything you do, and don't confront him directly."
Jiang Yutang understood: "I know, don't worry. You all need to take good care of yourselves in the Northern Frontier. Stay with Lan Zhou and don't overexert yourselves."
Jiang Huaiyu grinned, patted her shoulder hard, then looked up at Cheng Daier with a bright smile before turning and running back to the group.
At Cheng Lanzhou's command, the procession slowly set off, the sounds of horses' hooves and footsteps mingling together before gradually disappearing into the morning mist.
Jiang Yutang stood there until the group was no longer in sight before slowly lowering her aching arms.
I silently prayed in my heart: You must come back safely.
Since Cheng Lanzhou's army left, the Danzhou military camp has been mostly empty.
However, under Captain Wu's strict orders, the soldiers continued to train every day without fail, and the number of sentries was twice as many as before, as they had to be on guard against unexpected changes at all times.
For several days in a row, Gu Wenxiao disappeared without a trace, neither interfering in matters at the military camp nor causing trouble for the Jiang and Cheng families.
But this calmness only made Jiang Yutang more uneasy.
The quieter it is, the more likely it is that a dirty trick is being brewed.
It just so happened that Cheng Dai'er had nothing to do at the military camp, so Jiang Yutang suggested that they go and get her wedding dress.
Cheng Dai'er's eyes lit up, and most of her worries from the past few days dissipated. She quickly nodded in agreement.
The two arrived side by side at the embroidery shop in the west of the city. As soon as they entered, the shop assistant recognized Jiang Yutang and immediately greeted her warmly: "Madam Cheng, you've arrived?"
"We've come to pick up the wedding dress we ordered before," Jiang Yutang said with a smile.
"Please wait a moment, I'll go get it right away!" The waiter hurriedly turned and ran to the back room, not forgetting to call out, "Please come with me to the private room, I'll make you a pot of good tea."
Before long, the shop assistant came in carrying a gilded lacquer box. He carefully opened it, and inside lay a bright red wedding dress.
The phoenix embroidered with gold thread is lifelike, and the pearls on the skirt gleam with a warm luster under the light. Next to it is a kingfisher crown, so exquisite that it is hard to look away.
The two gently stroked the fabric; it felt delicate and soft, clearly made of the finest brocade.
"Auntie, hurry up and try it on, see if it fits!" Jiang Yutang pushed Cheng Daier.
When the door opened again, Cheng Daier stood there in her wedding dress. Her originally heroic eyebrows and eyes were softened by the red, making her so beautiful that it was hard to look away.
"Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!"
Jiang Yutang clapped her hands excitedly: "Auntie, if Third Brother were here, he would be drooling on the ground!"
Such straightforward praise, coming from her mouth, conveyed utter sincerity without feeling out of place.
Cheng Daier lowered her head shyly, a rare occurrence for her, and asked softly, "Is it really beautiful?"
"Of course it's true!" the shop assistant chimed in. "When this wedding dress was finished, even our manager praised it. I'll go get you both a bronze mirror right now!"
Looking at herself in the mirror, Cheng Daier stroked the phoenix pattern on her wedding dress, feeling both joy and sorrow.
She was happy because the wedding dress was so beautiful, but sad because her beloved was far away in the northern frontier, and she didn't know when she would be able to wear it and get married.
Jiang Yutang saw through her thoughts and gently comforted her, "Third Brother and the others will definitely come back safely. When that happens, we'll have a grand wedding and let everyone in Danzhou share in the joy."
After carefully putting away the wedding dress and phoenix crown into a wooden box provided by the embroidery workshop, the two left Jinxiu Pavilion and went to a well-regarded restaurant nearby.
I had just ordered a few signature dishes and hadn't even taken a couple of bites when I heard the waiter's enthusiastic shouts.
"Please come in, sir!"
Jiang Yutang looked up and her face instantly darkened.
The person who walked in was Gu Wenxiao. He was wearing a dark blue brocade robe, waving a fan, and looked quite relaxed.
The two locked eyes, Gu Wenxiao's gaze filled with obvious provocation.
Jiang Yutang clicked his tongue and said to Cheng Daier, "Let's pack it up and eat it at the restaurant."
Cheng Daier put down her chopsticks and nodded.
Just as he was about to call for the waiter, Gu Wenxiao had already walked to the table as if they were old friends and plopped down in the chair opposite him.
His gaze fell on the wooden box that Cheng Daier had placed to the side. Seeing the phoenix pattern embroidered on it, he said sarcastically, "Oh, is she going to pick up her wedding dress? Jiang Huaiyu is really lucky."
"None of your business!" Jiang Yutang said rudely. "Waiter, take it all out!"
Gu Wenxiao wasn't angry. He just watched them pack their things with a smile. His gaze remained fixed on them until the two of them walked out of the restaurant with the packed food.
He then raised his hand and whispered a few words to the attendant beside him.
