Chapter 144 The military camp finally released them.
Ignoring everyone's expressions, Cheng Dai'er continued, "Now that we've taken the things, there's no reason to return them. We, the Cheng family, will remember the kindness of the Jiang family and repay it in the future."
She deliberately emphasized the word "en," which made it sound like she was trying to distance herself from the situation.
"Dai'er, how dare you be so rude!" Madam Lin scolded in a low voice, then looked at them and forced a smile.
"This child has suffered some mistreatment in the military camp, and speaks without thinking. Please don't take it to heart."
After thanking them, the two left the tent.
Before leaving, Cheng Daier glanced back at Jiang Yutang one last time, her eyes filled with dissatisfaction and confusion.
The tent flap fell, blocking out the figures outside. Jiang Yutang lowered her eyes and slowly sat down, her heart heavy and confused.
Jiang Sumin frowned and said with dissatisfaction, "What's wrong with the Cheng family? We kindly brought them things, but it's like we've offended them."
Jiang Yutang shook her head and forced a smile: "Perhaps there's some misunderstanding."
She roughly guessed the reason.
Cheng Daier often ran into Cheng Lanzhou in the armory of the military camp. Perhaps Cheng Lanzhou told her about their affair, which caused his dissatisfaction with her.
She scratched her head in frustration; it seemed this matter was more troublesome than she had imagined.
On the third day, just as dawn was breaking and before the news of the army camp releasing people had spread, Jiang Yutang was awakened by a familiar shout outside the tent.
She groggily propped herself up and sat up, still feeling sleepy, when she heard the sound of the tent flap being pulled open, followed by Jiang Songzhi's joyful voice.
"Huaiyu! You're finally back!"
"Brother, I didn't expect you to live so far away. It was so hard for me to find you." Jiang Huaiyu's loud voice rang out from the tent.
Yun hurriedly put on her coat and ran out. A moment later, she excitedly shouted into the tent, "Third Brother is back!"
Jiang Yutang yawned, slowly put on his clothes, grabbed the crutch by the bed, and limped out of the tent.
Jiang Huaiyu stood at the door with his hands on his hips, his sun-darkened face full of smiles, telling his elder brother about interesting things that happened in the military camp.
He spotted Jiang Yutang immediately, raised his hand and waved vigorously: "Little sister! How's your leg?"
"Much better," Jiang Yutang replied with a smile.
"Come in and talk, it's cold outside," Jiang Shengan's voice came from inside the tent.
The crowd escorted Jiang Huaiyu into the tent. As soon as he stepped over the threshold, he was stunned by the sight before him.
Jiang Huaiyu, without any hesitation, plopped down on Jiang Sumin's bed and poked the wooden frame next to the bed: "Did you guys make all these strange things yourselves?"
Jiang Sumin pushed him aside with disdain: "It was all arranged by my younger sister."
Jiang Huaiyu immediately gave a thumbs up: "My little sister is amazing!"
Then he sighed and said, "I slept on a makeshift bed on the floor every day in the military camp. I would huddle together in the cold at night and have to listen to those grown men snoring!"
Mu brought him some warm water and jokingly said with a smile, "Then take advantage of these few days of rest to quickly find a girl to settle down with, so that you can visit the military camp often and bring her some hot soup or water."
Everyone expected Jiang Huaiyu to say "It's still early" as usual, but to their surprise, he suddenly fell silent, his fingers tracing the edge of the water glass, and after a few seconds he suddenly stood up.
"Let's not talk about that, little sister. How have you been going to the clinic these past few days?"
Jiang Yutang popped a candy into her mouth: "Big brother and fourth brother will take turns carrying me."
"Then it's my turn today!"
Jiang Huaiyu patted his chest and squatted down in front of Jiang Yutang without saying a word: "Come on, Third Brother will carry you!"
Jiang Yutang instantly thought of Doctor Xu at the clinic and struggled with whether or not she should refuse.
But then he thought that matters of the heart should be left to nature, and perhaps this was their destiny. So he stopped hesitating and gently climbed onto Jiang Huaiyu's back.
As soon as the two arrived at the entrance of the clinic, they saw Dr. Xu sweeping the floor with a broom.
She looked up and saw the two of them, her eyes instantly lighting up. She quickly put down her broom and stepped forward, her voice trembling slightly: "Miss Jiang, General Jiang..."
"Dr. Xu, how have you been?" Jiang Huaiyu greeted him with a smile, her tone cheerful.
Doctor Xu only dared to glance at him before shyly lowering her head, her hands gripping the broom handle tightly. "Please come inside," she said, "I've made you some hot tea." With that, she hurriedly went inside.
Jiang Huaiyu looked at her back and whispered to Jiang Yutang on her back, "Why does Dr. Xu seem so thin and weak, and speak so softly, like a girl?"
Jiang Yutang chuckled twice.
The three sat inside. Jiang Huaiyu took a sip of hot tea, smacked her lips, and praised, "Doctor Xu's tea is really well brewed."
He had barely finished speaking when he suddenly turned to Dr. Xu and asked, "By the way, Dr. Xu, are you married?"
Dr. Xu paused abruptly as she poured tea, spilling a few drops of hot water onto the table. She quickly wiped it away and whispered, "Not yet."
"Sigh, I don't have any either." Jiang Huaiyu sighed heavily, her face full of worry.
"In that camp full of rough men, finding a girl you like to marry is harder than winning a battle."
Dr. Xu pursed her lips and nodded gently, her eyes unconsciously glancing at him.
Jiang Huaiyu leaned forward again, looking all warm-hearted: "What kind of woman does Doctor Xu like? Tell me, and I'll keep an eye out for you!"
The sudden closeness startled Doctor Xu, who blushed instantly and involuntarily leaned back, hurriedly shaking his head: "No, no need to trouble you!"
Seeing this, Jiang Yutang quickly pulled Jiang Huaiyu back and gently patted his arm: "Don't make things worse! Doctor Xu has to take care of his young brother and doesn't have the mind to think about these things right now."
"Oh? Dr. Xu has a younger brother?"
Jiang Huaiyu was naturally cheerful, and he spent the whole morning chatting about interesting things that happened in the military camp, turning the dull atmosphere in the clinic into a lively and cheerful one.
Dr. Xu sat to the side, occasionally interjecting with a word or two, but her gaze always unconsciously fell on him.
At lunchtime, a sweet laugh came from outside the clinic.
Jiang Yutang peeked in and saw Jiang Sumin leading Ayi in. The child was holding a string of candied hawthorns and had a big smile on his face.
Hearing the commotion outside, Jiang Huaiyu immediately stood up and blocked the entrance of the clinic: "Why are you here?" Her gaze fell on A Yi, and her eyes narrowed.
"This is Doctor Xu's younger brother?"
Ayi, who had never met a stranger before, instinctively hid behind Jiang Sumin, only revealing his round eyes.
Seeing that he was there, Jiang Sumin pouted and said, "Why aren't you going to keep your parents company? What are you doing here?"
“It’s not too late to go tomorrow. But you, it must be so boring guarding the accounting office every day. Should I take a day to keep my lonely fourth brother company?” Jiang Huaiyu took the food box from his hand and raised an eyebrow.
"Forget it, you should go back to your barracks instead of causing trouble here."
While the two were bickering, Dr. Xu's low laughter came from inside the clinic. She came out from the inner room with bowls and chopsticks, smiling as she tried to smooth things over: "Please sit down, the food is getting cold."
Everyone sat around the table. Jiang Sumin picked up a piece of light green vegetable for Ayi and ladled half a spoonful of meat broth into his bowl.
Ah Yi held the bowl and ate in small bites.
Halfway through the meal, Jiang Sumin seemed to suddenly remember something and said, "Oh right, when I came here just now, I ran into Cheng Lanzhou at the gate."
