Chapter 118 First Day Report
"Thank you so much, Captain!" Jiang Yutang quickly expressed his gratitude, his heart filled with joy.
Going to the military camp for a medical check-up was a good opportunity to connect with Jiang Huaiyu, and the family would no longer have to worry about being separated and unable to see each other.
As for the remaining women, Captain Wu originally intended to arrange for them to do needlework and mend clothes for the soldiers. Before he could finish speaking, Cheng Dai'er frowned and said, "Captain, I'm not good at needlework, and I'm afraid the work I do won't be presentable."
Captain Wu's expression darkened slightly, and he countered, "Then what are your skills?"
Cheng Daier straightened her chest and said with a firm look in her eyes: "I studied martial arts with my father for five years. Ordinary men can't get close to me. My specialty is making weapons."
Upon hearing this, not only was Captain Wu stunned, but Jiang Yutang was also speechless with surprise. She had no idea that Cheng Daier had such a hidden skill.
None of the people from this general's mansion are ordinary.
After realizing what was happening, Captain Wu suddenly laughed loudly, "Good! Good! I never expected that so many talented people were hidden in this group of refugees!"
He immediately changed his mind: "You shall report to the weapons workshop tomorrow and assist the craftsmen in managing affairs."
After arranging everyone's accommodations, Captain Wu pointed to the two tents behind him and said, "These are the accommodations prepared for your two families. Although they are not as spacious as the mansions in the capital, they are clean and tidy. It's better than crammed into a wooden hut with dozens of people."
After seeing Captain Wu off, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief, and long-lost smiles appeared on their faces.
Stepping into the clean tent and looking at the neatly laid-out hay and brand-new coarse cloth bedding, Jiang Yutang exclaimed with emotion, "It's truly a turning point. Our days in Danzhou finally have hope."
Mu held Xiaoxiao in her arms and happily bounced the child in her arms: "Xiaoxiao, look, this is our new house."
Jiang Songzhi looked at the two of them and smiled helplessly: "How can this tent be considered a house? But at least it's quiet."
"Yes, at least we're not sleeping outdoors anymore." Yun's eyes reddened as she reached out and touched the fabric of the tent.
Seeing her family's joyful expressions, Jiang Yutang felt a long-lost sense of peace, though a bittersweet feeling lingered in her heart.
She stepped forward and took Yun's arm, smiling as she said to everyone, "If we behave well, we can buy a house and a big vegetable garden to grow vegetables!"
No sooner had she finished speaking than the sound of Cheng Daier pouring cold water came from the side, her tone carrying a hint of calm sharpness.
"Get out? Don't be naive. Pulling us out of the refugee camp and bringing us into this walled camp is not giving us any special privileges, it's clearly surveillance."
Jiang Yutang's smile vanished instantly. She calmed down and thought about it carefully. It was true. After all, they were family members of officials who had been exiled with a criminal record. How could the court easily let its guard down?
The so-called "special arrangements" are nothing more than another way to bring them under control.
But she was not discouraged. She looked Cheng Daier straight in the eye and said, "It's all up to us. Nobody wants to be watched forever. As long as we do our jobs well and show our sincerity and ability to gain trust, we will always have a chance to get out of this situation."
Seeing the determination in her eyes, Cheng Daier lost the desire to continue arguing and helped Lin Shi lower her head to crawl into the smaller tent next to her.
They deliberately gave the larger one to the Jiang family.
Jiang Yutang walked into the large tent and looked around in the dim light coming in from outside.
Inside, there were only a few simple bed boards covered with dry grass, and a few coarse cloth quilts piled in the corner. Although they could be used, the weather was getting colder day by day, and these thin quilts could not keep out the cold wind of Danzhou at all.
What's more troublesome is that there are nine people in their family, but only three beds, so they'll have to make do with sleeping on the floor tonight.
"I'll go to the market tomorrow and buy some thick quilts and cotton wadding."
Jiang Yutang made the decision and pointed to the middle of the tent, saying, "We'll hang a blackout curtain here to divide the tent into two parts, inside and outside. The women will sleep inside, and the men will sleep outside. That way, they'll be more comfortable."
Jiang Songzhi frowned as he looked at the cramped space and said with a wry smile, "I'm afraid we can only find some wooden planks to build a large communal bed, and everyone can squeeze in to sleep."
Jiang Yutang rested her chin on her hand and pondered for a moment, then her eyes lit up: "No need for that. We can make bunk beds, which will free up a lot of space."
"Bunk beds?"
No one could imagine what it looked like.
Jiang Yutang blinked and mysteriously curled her lips: "You'll find out when the time comes. When I buy bedding tomorrow, I'll also see if there's a carpenter around here to find some sturdy wood and rope."
It was already late, and everyone had to report to their posts early the next morning, so it was really not advisable to stay up late any longer.
After quickly washing up with water from the well, they each found a place to lie down and rest.
The next morning, they were awakened not by the sun, but by the sound of bugles.
The dull horn sound, like a death knell, pierced the tent. Jiang Yutang struggled to open his heavy eyelids and groggily looked at the top of the tent.
The heavy canvas completely blocked out the light, indicating that it was clearly still dark.
"What time is it already...?"
She muttered to herself, grabbed a thick coat draped over the edge of the bed, put it on, and tiptoed out of the tent.
As soon as she lifted the curtain, a gust of cold wind rushed into her collar, making her shiver. From the direction of the training ground not far away, she could faintly hear the unified shouts, mixed with the crisp sound of clashing weapons.
She resignedly wiped her face, looked up at the sky, where sparse stars still hung on the dark blue sky, not even a hint of dawn had appeared.
She wondered to herself: Does this mean I'll have to get up this early every day from now on? For the first time, she felt that the sound of the bugle was more terrifying than her phone alarm.
The curtain of the tent next to them was suddenly flung open, and Cheng Dai'er emerged from inside. Seeing Jiang Yutang still standing there, looking sleepy, she immediately frowned.
"What are you standing there for? Are you waiting for soldiers to come and call you like escorts?"
After saying that, she walked with her head held high toward the closed gate of the camp, showing no signs of being tired from just waking up.
Jiang Yutang yawned, roaring like a dragon, and dared not delay any longer. He turned around and crawled back into the tent to wake everyone up.
"Brother, it's time to go to the academy to report for duty."
"Second brother, don't be late going to the Northern Garrison Commander's place."
"Fourth Brother, the accountant needs to reconcile the accounts, so be careful."
She gave them detailed instructions and then helped Yun and Mu set out breakfast, which consisted of leftover flatbread and oatmeal from last night.
After breakfast, she and her three brothers set off in different directions to report for their respective "work posts".
The others stayed in the tent to wait, as arranged by Captain Wu, and people from the embroidery workshop would come to pick them up to do needlework.
Jiang Yutang inquired along the way, asking several patrolling soldiers before finally finding the courtyard of the clinic where she worked.
As soon as I reached the door, I smelled a rich, fresh aroma of medicinal herbs. The drying racks in the yard were covered with herbs that were drying in the sun.
She peeked out from the doorway and saw a thin figure moving among the drying racks, bending over and turning over the medicinal herbs.
She called out, "Excuse me, is this the camp's medical clinic? I'm Jiang Yutang, who was assigned to help out."
