Chapter 51 What a talkative man!
Even just revealing her eyes is enough to be stunning.
Jiang Yutang hurriedly looked away, and couldn't help but mutter to herself: I didn't expect Cheng Lanzhou to be so particular despite his cold and hard appearance. He even wore a headscarf to protect himself from the sun.
A light gray square scarf covered most of his face, revealing only his thick, dark eyebrows and deep-set eyes. His high nose bridge was particularly prominent in the sunlight, making him look somewhat like an exotic Persian.
Hiss, if Cheng Lanzhou knew about her wild thoughts, she would probably give him a cold shoulder.
However, buying this headscarf was indeed timely. Over the next three days, the sun grew increasingly scorching, making the skin ache. Having a headscarf to cover oneself would save a lot of suffering.
That night, she made up her mind to travel back in time to buy sun protection equipment.
Jiang Yu paid special attention to Cheng Lanzhou's movements. Seeing him leaning against a withered tree not far away with his arms crossed and closing his eyes to rest, she quietly laid out a bamboo mat behind the cart. Using the cart as cover, she blocked the two of them from seeing her and made sure that no one could see her movements.
She looked around like a thief, her gaze landing on Jiang Jiuzhe, who was on night watch that day. When he bent down to tidy up the thick towel for Zhu, she quickly buried herself in the towel, pulled out a book, and then remained motionless.
Back in her modern home, she immediately picked up her phone. The screen showed that only half a day had passed, and there was still no news from the hospital. Presumably, her grandfather's surgery was still being prepared, and her anxiety eased slightly.
Without lingering, she grabbed her wallet and rushed to the wholesale market, planning to test the waters first by buying twenty sets of sun protection gear.
Back home, Jiang Yutang packed up her sun protection gear and picked up the pirated book she used for time travel, ready to return to ancient times, when her fingers inadvertently brushed against the pages.
The once blank page was now covered with dense black text, which, upon closer inspection, was all about the plot changes she had caused.
For example, the details of how she exchanged beef jerky for silver, cooperated with merchants, and even bribed the yamen runners with "elixirs," as well as how she took care of the Jiang family, are all clearly recorded in the book.
She was overwhelmed with mixed feelings, both surprised and somewhat moved.
It turns out that every move she made was subtly changing the fate of the characters in the book, as if she had truly become the savior of the unfortunate people in the book.
She flipped through the book again and found that a crooked, red symbol, resembling a tree branch, had appeared in the upper right corner of the first page.
Has this ever happened before?
She frowned and thought for a long time, but couldn't figure out what it meant or what it signified. Unable to come up with a solution, she had no choice but to give up for the time being.
Just then, her phone rang. The caller ID showed it was the bespectacled man who had previously bought her antique clothes and inkstone.
Jiang Yutang answered the phone. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the other party asked directly, "Ms. Jiang, have you had any new 'good stuff' lately? My friend really liked the inkstone you brought last time."
She stammered, "Not yet, but... soon."
Her gaze fell on the packed sun protection gear, and she silently cheered herself on. This time when she got back, she was determined to find as many valuable antique items as possible!
She took a deep breath, gripped the book tightly, and once again triggered the power of time travel.
The sound of the wind suddenly amplified, and as soon as she opened her eyes, her face was covered in sand.
The person on night watch had been changed to Cheng Lanzhou. She dared not go looking for things on her own, otherwise it would surely arouse suspicion. She could only wait until dawn the next day to ask someone else to go with her.
Before dawn, the campsite was still shrouded in a hazy morning mist.
Jiang Yutang got up quietly, intending to seek help from Jiang Songzhi, but after circling the camp, she couldn't find him anywhere.
Looking for your older brother?
A clear, cold voice suddenly rang out behind her, startling her so much that she turned around abruptly. There she saw Cheng Lanzhou standing not far away, his tall figure outlined in the morning light.
Feeling guilty, her heart pounded, and even her breathing became erratic.
Cheng Lanzhou stepped forward, his gaze falling on her empty hands. His tone was calm but carried an undeniable certainty: "He went to find a restroom. You're going to retrieve the goods left behind by the 'merchant,' right? If you don't mind, I'll go with you."
Jiang Yutang craned his neck in surprise, his pupils contracting slightly. How did he know he was going to pick up the goods?
Had they been secretly watching my movements all this time?
With none of her older brothers around, and Cheng Lanzhou staring intently at her with eyes so sharp it seemed he wanted to dissect her thoughts and carefully observe every change in her expression.
She forced a calm demeanor and gave a sheepish smile: "No need to trouble yourself, I'll just ask my mother for help."
"No trouble at all." Cheng Lanzhou persisted, not moving an inch, clearly determined to follow and find out what was going on.
"It's not safe for you to go alone; it's safer to go with someone else."
Jiang Yutang swallowed hard, quickly calculating in his mind.
The places where the supplies appeared were always clean and tidy, without any flaws. Even if he went with them, he wouldn't be able to see anything, and it might even dispel his concerns.
With that thought in mind, she nodded: "Then I'll trouble you."
The two walked side by side in the direction they had agreed upon, and the more Jiang Yutang walked, the stranger it seemed.
In the places I've passed through these past few days, the nearby woods and grasses have become increasingly sparse, leaving bare land exposed with only a few clumps of withered grass. From a distance, it looks like a bald Mediterranean Sea, a stark contrast to the lush greenery of the past.
"I've never seen this desolate place before," Jiang Yutang couldn't help but mutter.
Cheng Lanzhou didn't reply, his gaze sweeping around as if checking for potential dangers.
Seeing that the other person was ignoring her, she awkwardly dug her toes into the ground, and even her walking posture became clumsy.
As soon as Jiang Yutang stepped into the sparse grass, she spotted the package lying on the ground.
She strode forward, bent down to pick up the package, and turned to walk back, only to see Cheng Lanzhou still standing there, his eyes fixed on the surroundings, as if searching for some trace.
Only when she got close did the other person look away and focus on what she was holding in her arms.
Seeing that the items were wrapped up tightly and nothing could be seen, she didn't ask any questions. She simply replied with a light "Let's go," then turned around and walked back first, her steps brisk, showing no intention of helping to carry the packages.
Jiang Yutang stood there, stunned, staring at his tall, straight back, and couldn't help but curse inwardly:
If you're going to pretend, at least do it convincingly! It was clearly him who insisted on coming along, and now look what happened. We agreed that "it's safer to go together," but instead, she, a frail woman, is carrying a heavy bundle while he walks away with his arms swinging freely!
She gritted her teeth, could only clutch her bundle, and hurried after him, adding another mark to her mind about Cheng Lanzhou's "unapproachable" behavior.
Jiang Songzhi saw Jiang Yutang following behind Cheng Lanzhou from afar, carrying a bulging bag in her arms, her steps heavy and she was moving with difficulty in small steps. A wave of self-reproach immediately welled up in his heart.
He strode forward, took the package from Jiang Yutang's hands, weighed it in his hand, and frowned even more: "This is such a heavy thing, why didn't you ask Jiuze and Huaiyu to help you?"
As he spoke, he turned to Cheng Lanzhou and nodded his thanks: "Thank you for accompanying my little sister. You've worked hard."
Jiang Yutang stood to the side, glancing disapprovingly at Cheng Lanzhou, who was expressionless beside her, but swallowed back the complaint that was on the tip of her tongue.
You can't exactly say to the person involved, "He didn't help at all, and just walked ahead with his hands waving."
He could only grit his teeth and force a dry smile, saying in a slightly sarcastic tone, "It's alright, brother. It's not that heavy. With Young Master Cheng shielding me from the wind, the journey is much easier."
