Chapter 652: Leave No Regrets
"Oh," Ye Rufeng replied thoughtfully.
That was the end of the story.
Bai Zhi noticed her grandfather's lowered eyes, her feelings were complicated.
Originally, she came to invite her maternal grandfather to dinner, hoping that he and her uncle could meet again. However, the old man was unwilling to go, so she had no choice but to see if she could talk to her uncle alone later and ask him to come and see her maternal grandfather.
He was busy entertaining guests that day and hadn't had a chance to chat with his uncle yet.
They were also in a hurry, as they needed to go back tomorrow.
In the afternoon, Lu Ye and Bai Zhi took everyone to a local home-style restaurant.
After the meal, Bai Zhi specially packed up several dishes, as well as noodle soup.
Then she found an opportunity to get close to Ye Tiandong and whispered, "Uncle, come with me to see Grandpa."
Upon hearing this, Ye Tiandong refused in a flat tone, "Didn't we meet today? What's there to see?"
His tone wasn't as harsh as before; he no longer expressed unforgivable hatred when mentioning his grandfather.
Bai Zhi knew that his attitude was subtly changing.
She looked at him and asked, "Uncle, don't you have anything to say?"
Ye Tiandong's eyes flickered slightly. "What did you say?"
"Don't you visit Grandma Zhou often? Grandma Zhou is now lucid. You've talked to her so many times, but haven't you gotten any clues from her words?"
Ye Tiandong never expected that Bai Zhi was able to remotely spy on his life in Nancheng so thoroughly.
Bai Zhi continued, "My grandfather has finally come back. Why don't you go see him and talk to him? He's so old. What if something happens to him later? Won't you regret it?"
Bai Zhi's words silenced Ye Tiandong.
He couldn't help but recall that time in the southern city when he stayed in his father's courtyard, and the old man secretly cooked porridge for him and brought it to the bedside table, standing steadily in front of the bed watching him.
That time, he didn't give him a chance to speak, and the next day, the old man left Nancheng dejectedly.
He was gone for almost half a year.
To be honest, he has thought a lot and learned a lot in the past six months.
The hatred in my heart gradually dissipated.
But to actually reconcile with him...
Given their temperaments, even if there are no misunderstandings or resentments between them, they may not necessarily get along.
Over the years, the estrangement between us has transcended resentment itself.
He didn't know how to get along with him.
Bai Zhi continued to work on his mindset, "Uncle, I believe that you are willing to come to our opening ceremony and also want to see my grandfather. Otherwise, you would definitely be hiding and wouldn't come. I know you quite well. You may seem aloof on the surface, but you are actually more soft-hearted than anyone else. Let's not leave ourselves with any regrets, okay?"
"I have a drinking appointment with Boss Lu, so I'll be leaving now." After saying that, Ye Tiandong caught up with Lu Shaoan and Lu Hai ahead.
Cui Hua stood aside, looking at Ye Tiandong's stubborn and unyielding attitude, and felt a headache coming on.
Bai Zhi called out to his retreating figure, "Uncle, my maternal grandfather lives in the alley next to the clinic, the second one with the green iron gate. I'm going to deliver their food now."
After Bai Zhi finished speaking, she picked up the food and left.
She asked Lu Ye to go to the hotel to keep an eye on his parents and second uncle, and also to keep an eye on her uncle, in case he came to his senses and wanted to go find his maternal grandfather, but since he was unfamiliar with the area, he might not be able to find the way.
"Mom and Dad, you should go to the hotel and rest early. We'll come back tomorrow morning."
"Okay, go back and see your grandfather soon."
When Bai Zhi carried the food to the courtyard, Ye Rufeng and Doctor Zhou had just closed the gate and gone home.
Bai Zhi said with a smile, "It's time to eat. You must have had a hard day."
"It's not hard work. What's so hard about treating patients?"
Ye Rufeng was washing his hands when his gaze inadvertently swept behind Bai Zhi.
He quickly withdrew his gaze, a faint trace of disappointment flashing in his eyes.
Bai Zhi suggested four dishes and one soup.
It was mainly because Dr. Zhou was there that he specially asked the restaurant to cook two extra dishes.
In those days, restaurant portions were very generous; four dishes were more than enough for the three of them to finish.
"Aren't you going back? Where's Lu Ye?"
"He's chatting with his parents."
Bai Zhi said, "I'll sleep with Linlin tonight. Tomorrow morning I have to take my father-in-law and the others to the train station, and then I'll come to the clinic to work. I won't have enough time to go home."
"You've spoken to Lu Ye? Is that kid willing?"
Ye Rufeng's words made Bai Zhi a little embarrassed. She coughed lightly, "It's a promise, he agreed."
Bai Zhi watched her grandfather and the others eating and chatting, the atmosphere at home was very harmonious. Doctor Zhou was also very gratified to see that his daughter was being raised so well by Ye Rufeng, and he was even more grateful to Ye Rufeng.
His daughter is able to become an apprentice of Doctor Ye; just that reputation alone will make her famous in the future.
In a few years, I will be able to stand on my own.
Just thinking about it is very exciting.
But then I thought about myself, how I've lived half my life in a daze, accomplishing nothing, and I felt a little sad.
He didn't accomplish what he liked, and he didn't make a name for himself either, running a traditional Chinese medicine shop that he didn't like.
But he persevered to prevent Jishengtang from closing down.
No matter what, as long as Jishengtang's doors are open, this signboard will always be there.
He now hopes that his daughter can graduate soon, take over the baton from him, and set him free.
After dinner, Dr. Zhou didn't rush back to the hotel. Instead, he sat there chatting with Ye Rufeng and the others. Ye Rufeng asked Dr. Zhou about his parents' recent situation, and Dr. Zhou answered all his questions. Hearing that his mother's condition was improving and that she was more lucid, Ye Rufeng was happy for the family.
Looking at her daughter, who had become so outstanding, and then at Ye Rufeng, Dr. Zhou's eyes were full of gratitude. "Uncle Ye, my father is so lucky to have a friend like you. You and Boss Ye are both very kind and righteous people. Boss Ye was in Nancheng recently and often visited my mother and chatted with her. My mother even had a rare smile on her face. Now you're helping Linlin study medicine. I really don't know how to thank you enough."
Upon hearing Doctor Zhou's words, Ye Rufeng's eyes flickered slightly. That bastard often went to visit Old Mrs. Zhou.
Bai Zhi smiled and said, "Dr. Zhou, my maternal grandmother and Grandma Zhou were good friends before, so it's only right that my uncle goes to visit Grandma Zhou."
“Our two families have been friends for generations, and we must carry on this friendship in our generation,” Bai Zhi said, glancing at Zhou Lin with a smile.
“That must be passed down. May your friendship with Linlin last forever, and may your children become good friends in the future.”
Everyone chatted, and the atmosphere at home was quite lively.
However, both Ye Rufeng and Bai Zhi seemed distracted.
Ye Rufeng would occasionally drift off into thought, while Bai Zhi would always prick up her ears to listen to what was happening outside.
