Chapter 44 Su Anran Has a Problem
“Our boss is away for the next couple of days, he’ll be back Wednesday afternoon.” Seeing Jiang Ruan’s hesitant expression, the interviewer explained further, “If you’re available, we’ll schedule a final interview with you for 3 pm Wednesday.”
"I'm free," Jiang Ruan replied.
My mother's surgery is this afternoon. Even if there are any unexpected situations, Tuesday will be enough.
We don't know how much the surgery will cost yet. I must keep my job, and I hope Huo Zhizhou won't ruin things this time.
Jiang Ruan went straight to the hospital after the interview.
Although the surgery was in the afternoon, I couldn't help but worry.
When she arrived at the hospital a little after 11 a.m., Dr. Zhou greeted her briefly, his tone not much different from usual: "You know about the surgery, right?"
"I understand." Jiang Ruan sat down opposite him, her gentle eyes revealing undisguised worry and seriousness. "How confident are you?"
"Fifty percent," Dr. Zhou said truthfully.
Jiang Ruanxin raised it.
For years, my mother has been lying in a coma in bed. Although she can't respond to what I say, her body occasionally has some conditioned reflexes that let her know she is still alive.
But if it fails, they'll have to rely on a ventilator for life...
She dared not think about it.
"We will do our best to treat your mother," Dr. Zhou said gently, having witnessed Jiang Ruan's filial piety over the years. "Heaven will bless every good person."
"Please feel free to use anything you need during the surgery. Don't worry about whether I can afford it; I'll work hard to make up for it." Jiang Ruan forced a smile, knowing that talk of God was just a comforting thought.
Dr. Zhou opened his mouth, but ultimately only uttered one word: "Okay."
Before telling Jiang Ruan that the surgery was scheduled, he also told President Huo about it. After he found out, he had ten million yuan transferred to the hospital's account so that he could do his best to treat Jiang Ruan's mother.
But the premise is not to let Jiang Ruan know, so that she thinks she has to earn all the money herself.
He didn't know what Mr. Huo's purpose was in doing this, but it was normal to do things for money, and as a doctor, the only thing he could do was to be responsible for his patients.
"Go get something to eat first." He composed himself. "The surgery starts at two o'clock."
Jiang Ruan verbally agreed, but with surgery imminent, she had no appetite. She went to her mother's ward, sat on a chair next to the bed, and talked to the sleeping woman for a long time.
Dr. Zhou, who had followed, saw this through the viewing window from outside the door.
He didn't go in to disturb her, nor did he go in to try to persuade her.
Time flew by and it was already afternoon.
As Jiang Ruan's mother was wheeled into the operating room, her heart skipped a beat when the red light came on.
"Worrying won't help." A light, cheerful female voice suddenly rang out, followed by Su Anran, dressed elegantly, walking over from around the corner. "Instead of wasting your time, you'd be better off going out to earn some money for your aunt's medical expenses."
Jiang Ruan didn't even glance at her, nor did she care why she was there.
Now, all she can think about is praying for a successful surgery.
“I learned from Zhizhou that your mother had surgery today,” Su Anran said as she sat down next to her.
Jiang Ruan chuckled inwardly.
Huo Zhizhou really did tell her everything.
"Besides checking on Auntie's surgery today," Su Anran said, her expression turning serious, her previous sarcastic tone replaced by a serious one, "I also want to discuss a deal with you, a deal that benefits both of us."
"Didn't you see the 'No Loudness' sign on the wall?" Jiang Ruan disliked her physically.
“My volume isn’t considered loud,” Su Anran said. “It’s not even loud.”
Jiang Ruan: "..."
Su Anran glanced at her solemn profile and for a moment felt as if she had returned to the time when they first met, so much so that she blurted out: "If it weren't for what happened back then, could we have been friends for life?"
"No," Jiang Ruan said decisively.
Su Anran's personality destined her to be restless.
Even without that incident, they wouldn't have been able to be friends for life.
“Since that’s not possible, let’s talk about Huo Zhizhou.” Su Anran knew this outcome and wasn’t surprised. “You probably don’t want him to focus his attention on you, or to interfere in your life.”
Jiang Ruan glanced at her sideways.
I don't quite understand her thinking.
“I don’t want to either.” Su Anran met her gaze without looking away. “On this matter, we have the same goal.”
"What do you want to say?" Jiang Ruan's eyes held a deeper emotion.
"Cooperation." Su Anran stated her purpose frankly, "I will give you my savings from all these years. After your aunt's condition stabilizes, you can take her away from Jingzhou. As long as you agree, I will take care of Zhizhou."
Jiang Ruan frowned slightly.
Su Anran was more serious than ever: "I promise he won't make things difficult for you and your friends."
"I already answered that question last time." Jiang Ruan's gaze was still fixed on the bright operating light; she wasn't interested in the topic at hand.
“Last time I used Huo Zhizhou’s money to force you to leave, which was somewhat humiliating.” Su Anran’s gaze was fixed on the same spot as hers. “This time I’m using my own savings to have a sincere talk with you.”
Jiang Ruan pursed her lips.
If she could, she wouldn't want to have anything to do with Huo Zhizhou, but some things are not something she can control.
"Is it true that a mistress is sincere in giving money to the wife to leave?" she replied.
“I know about what he’s been doing to you lately.” Su Anran wasn’t angry at her sarcasm. “As long as he hasn’t given up on you, he’ll continue to interfere in your life like this, and I will never get his full attention.”
“I have a question,” Jiang Ruan said.
Su Anran was serious about the conversation and her attitude was better than before: "Go on."
"Why did he say you were a very important person to him?" Jiang Ruan thought for a long time but couldn't figure out the reason.
In the five years since their marriage, there have been other people who have tried to get involved with Huo Zhizhou.
Beautiful, gentle, and individualistic people of all kinds have appeared, but without exception, none of them have attracted Huo Zhizhou's attention. He loves only her as he did at the beginning.
She thought she was the exception, but then Su Anran appeared.
To this day, she still doesn't know what Huo Zhizhou saw in Su Anran. In terms of appearance, Su Anran is not as pretty as her. In terms of ability, there are plenty of people in the Huo Group. Even in terms of scheming and manipulative tactics, there are many who are better than Su Anran.
Su Anran's eyes flickered slightly: "I don't know."
"Does he not know, or does he not want me to know?" Jiang Ruan had been suspicious since last time. "Or perhaps there's something wrong with the reason why you're important to him."
Su Anran did not speak.
Previously, she was afraid that Jiang Ruan would ask Huo Zhizhou, but based on what she had learned over this period of time, Jiang Ruan wouldn't ask, and even if she did, given Huo Zhizhou's personality, he wouldn't tell her directly.
In this way, she doesn't have to worry too much.
“If I remember correctly, you and Huo Zhizhou have never crossed paths from childhood to adulthood.” Jiang Ruan looked at her face, which was much calmer than usual, and said, word by word, “How can you say it’s important?”
