Fainting and amnesia
When Shen Muwei entered the ward, she paused and noticed that the boy on the bed directly opposite the door was already awake.
He reached out to grab the bottled water from the bedside table.
Shen Muwei immediately hid the paper bag behind the door, quickly stepped forward, unscrewed the bottle cap for Xiang Zhixing, and handed it over.
Xiang Zhixing frowned slightly, looked at Shen Muwei, hesitated before taking the water bottle, drinking two sips, and then setting it aside.
With a smile, Shen Muwei put the lid back on and pulled up a stool to sit down.
Xiang Zhixing stared at her for a long while, then, as if remembering something, a faint smile curved his lips, and he said to Shen Muwei:
"I remember you. You saved me. Thank you, Shen Muwei."
A single sentence sent Shen Muwei's heart plummeting from the sky to the abyss and back to the ground, a thrill far greater than when she was doing extreme sports.
She waved her hand in front of Xiang Zhixing's face: "Are you conscious? How do you know my name?"
She had originally intended to hide it.
Xiang Zhixing didn't understand what the other party meant, but still nodded: "Wake up, because you were quite famous during military training."
Indeed, Shen Muwei became famous for performing an over-the-shoulder throw during military training. Xiang Zhixing, on the other hand, became famous for frequently fainting during military training; the two individuals gained fame in slightly different ways.
However, that's not the point. Shen Muwei shook her head and asked cautiously:
Do you remember how you fainted?
Xiang Zhixing paused for two seconds, then looked blankly into the distance and said, "I think I went to an escape room with my roommate, and then I fainted. I vaguely remember seeing you save me."
Are you sure it was me who saved you?
Shen Muwei's heart raced again. She had just removed her makeup, and her clean face shouldn't have much of a connection to her appearance in the dimly lit room, right?
"I'm sure." Actually, he wasn't entirely sure; he just felt that Shen Muwei must have saved him the moment he saw her.
Now it was Shen Muwei's turn to be stunned.
"What's wrong?"
She laughed in her confusion and pointed to the door: "I just remembered, the doctor just said you woke up and told me to call him. I'm going to call him now, so don't wander around."
"good."
-
In the corridor outside the ward, Shen Muwei explained the situation of the secret room to the doctor in as much detail as possible.
The doctor adjusted his glasses and said, "If that's the case, it's possible that his brain activated a protective mechanism due to his extreme fear, causing him to temporarily forget what happened in the locked room."
"So, does this count as amnesia?"
“You can think that way, but I checked his head and there was no injury. It might just be a subconscious protective mechanism, so he could remember it at any time.”
"Is it possible that there is blood pooling in his brain? After all, he fell to the ground, and I'm afraid he might have hit his head."
The doctor said, "I suggest we get him a CT scan."
"Okay, thank you, doctor."
Shen Muwei returned to the ward and looked at the thin Xiang Zhixing, feeling somewhat overwhelmed.
"Do you have a headache?" Shen Muwei asked.
Xiang Zhixing shook his head and said, "It doesn't hurt, I don't feel anything for now."
"Did you hit your head when you fainted?"
"Probably not, because I subconsciously reached out to cushion my head."
Shen Muwei smirked and said, "You can still remember such detailed moments?"
"I remember even these subconscious things."
She bit her lower lip: "Are you sure you don't remember why you fainted?"
"OK."
Shen Muwei felt a mix of emotions and didn't know how to describe her feelings.
According to the doctor, he might remember everything in the next second; according to him, he could remember his subconscious actions, but he couldn't remember why he fainted, and instead regarded himself as his savior.
It just doesn't seem right.
The two remained silent. The ward was relatively quiet and not too noisy. The faint sobbing of the child receiving an IV drip next to them could be heard as he complained to his mother about how painful it was to be sick.
A series of light footsteps echoed in the corridor. Shen Muwei turned her head and saw three boys rushing in, heading straight for Xiang Zhixing.
When she saw that Xiang Zhixing had fainted, she didn't dare to make a sound. Instead, she carried him out through the employee entrance. The situation was urgent, so the boss accompanied her through the back door. The store was too crowded in the afternoon, so he had to leave the matter to her.
The person walking at the front was Zhou Chengming.
He looked at Shen Muwei with some doubt, then said to Xiang Zhixing, "Are you alright? We just finished the escape room and rushed to the boss to tell him we'd lost someone. The boss said he'd brought you to the hospital. How are you now?"
Xiang Zhixing shook his head: "I'm fine, perfectly fine, all thanks to this classmate." He pointed to Shen Muwei as he spoke.
A thin layer of sweat seeped out on Shen Muwei's back, and even her smile became less natural.
"I... I brought him here. I'm a player too, and I'm kind-hearted, yes." The more she spoke, the more guilty she felt, and she decided that leaving was the best option.
"Now that your friends have arrived and I've already paid the medical bills, I'll be leaving now."
Ignoring Xiang Zhixing calling her from behind, she strode to the door, picked up her paper bag, and quickly disappeared into the hospital corridor.
After a heavy rain in the morning, the sky gradually cleared up in the afternoon. The sun was very strong, making her feel a bit hot. She picked up a strand of hair and smelled it; it even smelled a little foul.
She needed to get a haircut, so she hailed a shared bicycle outside the hospital and rode to the barbershop near the school.
Her hair was cut short to her chin, which made her look much fresher. She opened her eyes wide and carefully checked herself in the mirror. The haircut was pretty good, making her look mischievous and clever.
After leaving the hair salon and having lunch at the cafeteria, she hurried back to her dormitory. The campus was quite noisy around four o'clock in the afternoon, with boisterous cheers coming from the sports field.
It's only the first week of the semester; the new students haven't even started registering yet, and it's not really lively there.
The sunlight after the rain was not gentle; it burned her skin.
She was the only one in the dormitory.
Today was exhausting for her; she'd never been so disheveled.
She took off her sneakers, put on sandals, picked up the water bottle next to her, and took several big gulps before she was finally quenched her thirst.
She sat there blankly, thinking about calling her boss to talk about it.
Strange water sounds came from the room.
She quickly got up and ran to the bathroom to check, and sure enough, the broken water pipe was leaking again!
A thin layer of water had accumulated on the floor. She grabbed a broom, swept the water into the toilet, took a picture, and posted it in the dormitory group chat.
This water pipe is leaking again.
Zhao Ranzhu: [Quick! Tell Auntie to stop the water from leaking downstairs; it's so embarrassing!]
Shen Muwei grabbed the keys and hurriedly ran downstairs.
The aunt was sitting and looking at her phone. When she saw Shen Muwei, she wasn't surprised and casually asked, "Is it leaking again?"
She replied, exhausted, "Auntie, could you please get a better water pipe? This kind of thing doesn't solve the problem properly."
The aunt took out a notebook and gave it to her: "I know there's a problem with the water pipes on your floor. The whole floor needs to be fixed. I'll report this to the school. Please write it down."
Shen Muwei wrote in her notebook: [Building 17, Room 604, Leaking water pipe, Shen Muwei, 187XXXXXXXX]
“Auntie, I’ve finished writing,” she handed over the notebook. “Then you must remember to tell your boss, otherwise the constant leaks won’t do.”
"Okay, don't worry, Auntie will definitely tell you. I'll bring a repairman to your house later to fix it."
Having heard this explanation countless times, Shen Muwei didn't know what to say. She glanced at the aunt with dissatisfaction and prepared to go upstairs.
Just as she turned around, she saw a familiar figure at the doorway.
The man stood against the light, the sunlight slanting and shining on him, while the reflection from the glass door next to him illuminated half of his face.
Xiang Zhixing's eyes are distinctive; if his eyelids droop slightly, he has a somewhat world-weary look.
He put his hands in his pockets, his posture languid, and his gaze fell on Shen Muwei.
Shen Muwei's breath hitched. Could it be that she remembered?
She was certain that Xiang Zhixing was only looking for her; there was no one else. He couldn't possibly be there to see her aunt.
Because she was the only one standing there talking to the aunt on the first floor; the rest were just passing by.
She was a little hesitant to go over.
Seeing that she had clearly seen him but wasn't coming over, Xiang Zhixing tilted his head in confusion, raised an eyebrow, took his right hand out of his pocket, palm up, and gestured for her to come closer.
Shen Muwei was certain that he probably knew.
The hospital she took Xiang Zhixing to was an affiliated hospital of Hui University, very close to the university. If he was discharged after she left, the time it would take to take a taxi back to school would be more than enough.
"Hehehe, you're discharged from the hospital? Don't you need to be observed for a while longer?" She tilted her head slightly to look at his face.
From her perspective, the sunlight was blinding, and she flinched, her eyes stinging and becoming slightly watery.
Xiang Zhixing automatically moved aside, glanced back at the sun, and then looked at her: "I'm fine now, there's no need for further observation. I feel great, so I'm being discharged."
"That's great, congratulations! Oh, by the way, how did you end up here?"
Xiang Zhixing: "I didn't have your contact information, so I asked around to find out which building you lived in, which is why I came here. I didn't expect to run into you downstairs."
Perhaps feeling guilty, Shen Muwei always sensed a hint of scrutiny in Xiang Zhixing's eyes.
My heart skipped a beat: "Looking for me? What do you want?"
They even found their way down to the dorm building! I'm doomed, I'm doomed, I'm going to be in big trouble...
"Thank you for saving me, so I'd like to treat you to a meal."
I breathed a sigh of relief.
Shen Muwei: "Actually, it's not necessary, but I'm more curious about who you asked to find out?"
“I know people from your department.”
He only said that one sentence.
However, Shen Muwei didn't dare to stay by his side for too long. She didn't know when he would regain his memory and what she would do if he came to settle accounts with her then.
Never mind how I know hers, it doesn't matter anymore. It's better to deal with the immediate crisis first.
“Sure,” Shen Muwei said, “but I’ve already eaten. How about next time?”
This way, we can at least have a chance to catch our breath.
"Sure, let's exchange contact information." With that, he took his phone out of his pocket and waved it at her.
The two scanned each other's WeChat QR codes downstairs.
"I'll head back now, and we'll keep in touch via WeChat later."
Shen Muwei snapped out of her daze: "Oh, okay, remember to go back and get some rest. Your body needs sleep to recover."
Xiang Zhixing looked at Shen Muwei, his eyes sparkling with dappled sunlight.
"Yes, thank you." With that, he waved to her and walked out.
As Shen Muwei watched his retreating figure, she felt a chill creep down her spine. No, this problem had to be solved!
She turned and went into the dormitory building, then went upstairs.
I had just sat down in my dorm room when I received a message on my phone:
xzx: [My new haircut looks great.]
