Chapter 40 The Abyss (Part Two)
Reading Settings
A few minutes ago, the green light disappeared. Someone moved the iron stake and the rope on it. Looking down from this direction, you can see another protruding, disc-shaped rock. The rock has a wire connected to the earth's veins inserted into it. Round balloons, like oranges, are covered with the wires. No matter how they float, they can't float out of the platform's range.
Billis thought he was alone, but he didn't expect there was another pipe cleaner here. That guy had already marked each balloon. If one of them exploded, it meant that the toxic gas was starting to rise again. If more than five exploded, they would have to prepare to evacuate.
Compared to this meticulous design and preparation, Billis was truly a novice, carrying only simple tools: a battery-powered drain drill, a bottle of solid solvent, and a spring needle that could rotate 360 degrees.
It's unclear whether these tools will be effective, let alone be able to find the root cause of traffic congestion overnight.
One more thing is certain: after the gas dissipated, the Abyss sounded quieter, but also more complex and unpredictable than before.
Vein-like branches sprouted from the cliff face, appearing to be a mixture of sturdy dry grass and redwood, plants that hadn't been there just hours before.
Could it be that these plants are blocking the Demon Path?
As Billis was thinking, he noticed that the Stand's skin had become too loose, with a layer of tattered, rotten flesh hanging down between the sunken cheeks and below the ears.
Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the golem had grown real wings.
The Stand knows what Billies wants! He wants to fly from Platform One to Platform Two!
However, Billis was not good at flying at all; all he could do was glide. When he spread his wings, he felt a strange feeling, not the joy of flying with Lisa in his arms, but panic and fear. What if he fell?
One second, two seconds, three seconds, the wings unfolded smoothly in all directions. Since there was no wind, it was a safe gliding experience.
After landing, the wings disappeared. Since the second platform was blocked by the first platform, it was pitch black, with only some lights flashing in front of it.
Under the refraction of the light, a creature appears on the cliff. It looks like a human. When it works, or rather, when it walks, it always uses both hands and feet. Its arms and legs are the same length, and it looks like the four legs of a wild animal. The difference between it and a human is that what grows on its arms and legs are not hands and feet, but round suction cups. These suction cups allow it to climb the wall very quickly so that it will not fall off.
Beris tensed up, thinking he had encountered a wizard again, and accidentally stepped on a shiny metal hinge.
Who's there?
Billis heard a familiar voice.
"Hey, it's me, buddy, it's me, don't be nervous."
"Nervous? Are you talking about you or me?"
The orc cleaner appeared before them. Because he was wearing a strangely shaped disc-shaped work uniform and carrying a support tool, it looked like he had several extra arms under the influence of light and shadow.
"To be honest, you really scared me, but only for a moment." Billis stepped forward and touched the other person's work clothes, the texture of which was like a rubber band.
Aren't you going to sleep?
"That's the advantage of using a Stand. What about you?"
"I want to finish my work as soon as possible."
"So you came down alone? But that's dangerous."
"What danger could there be in cleaning the pipes?"
As he spoke, the orc smoothed his remaining hair back and pulled a testing stick from his work clothes pocket. The stick looked like a thermometer and could display the specific color of the magic path based on the magical reaction of the abyss.
The orc held up the testing stick, shining it to the left and then to the right. Blue, gray, light brown, and red things appeared on it, but there was no white from the Magic Path.
To prove that the second platform was a workable platform, he held the stick above his head and walked from one side of the platform to the other. However, the measurement data showed that there was no magic path within a range of about 500 meters below the second platform.
Disappointed, the orc put away the detection stick. As the light disappeared, all sorts of strange creatures appeared on the cliff, and their appearances became increasingly peculiar, as if they had come from another dimension.
“It seems we have to keep going until we reach the third platform,” the orc cleaner said.
Billy nodded. "I agree. In any case, this doesn't seem like an easy job."
"Then what constitutes an easy job?"
"For example, holographic mentors, eternal alchemy, and magic-related industries are all easy to find, because this is another world."
"You're right, so shouldn't workers like us who risk our lives for pay have been eliminated long ago?"
"I don't want to spend too much time discussing whether this job is worth the risk. If we can't solve it today, we'll figure it out tomorrow. That's all we can do."
How many children do you have in your family?
"What?"
"I'm asking you, how many children do you have?"
"Not a single one."
"Then you will never understand why a father of six is in such a hurry to finish his work, because he wants to use the time he saves to do another job."
"However, we should consider saving time only under the premise of safety."
"Where do you think this is? The Abyss, understand? Some people say you can make a lot of money working in the Abyss, so I volunteered to give it a try. And you? Are you here for sightseeing?"
After the orc cleaner finished speaking, he quickly went to work.
He took a frisbee-like object out of his toolbox and threw it off the platform. The frisbee kept hitting the cliff face, creating a discordant sound. He quickly took out a second frisbee and repeated the action.
After throwing the seventh frisbee, a path appeared containing colorful balls of yarn.
Billis actually knew nothing about the art of clearing magic paths and was unaware that there was a reciprocal connection between sound vibrations and magic paths.
The orc cleaner pointed to the colorful path and said proudly, "Look, the magic path closest to us is undeveloped, so it's not the one we're looking for."
Billis then realized that it was some kind of projection effect.
"So, how do we find that blocked demonic path?"
"Jump down from here, and if you can float like a tube train, then you've found the right place."
"What if we get the wrong one?"
"Then you won't get this month's salary."
Life is so hard!
The orc cleaner suddenly threw away the safety rope tied to his body and prepared to jump off the platform.
Billis thought he was just joking, but he didn't expect him to be serious, so he immediately pinned him down from behind.
The two giants rolled around on the ground, but in the end, the Stand's power prevailed.
"Do you know what you're doing?" Billis yelled.
"Of course I know! Finish work early and get ready for the next job!"
"You're going to your death!"
The orc cleaner lowered his eyes, biting his lip in anger, struggling fiercely as he tried to turn over, but his hands and legs were pinned down by the brick-like substitute arms, as if they were fixed in place by something.
Billy realized that only by knocking his opponent unconscious could he subdue him.
The side that refused to give up quickly succumbed to force. Biris carried his companion back to the ground. As soon as they arrived, the orc cleaner woke up. He felt a thorny pain in his body, and his expression was completely different from before.
"What did I do?" he asked.
"You wanted to jump off the platform, but I stopped you. Sorry, the work will have to wait until tomorrow."
"Then let's postpone it until tomorrow. There's nothing wrong with that, right?"
"That's not what you just said!"
At this point, the orc cleaner got up from the ground and went back to his tent, as if to tell Billis that he didn't care at all about what he had said in the abyss.
It's like he's become a completely different person.
With a mix of trepidation and excitement, Billis entered the tent and found Irenshere enjoying a serving of fresh beef, with a small, pudding-like object stuck in his ear. He saw his partner but didn't greet him; instead, he removed the object from his ear.
It was a bugging device used by secret agents, with the other end connected to Billie's double.
Billis was careless; the bugging device was already installed the moment he was pushed out of the tent by Irensell.
“To be honest, you should have made him jump back then,” Irenshere said, wrapping the remaining beef ribs in a clean handkerchief. “If he had succeeded, it would have saved us some time.”
Billis ripped the bugging device from his body and threw it to Irensell, saying, "I have to stop him because he's the father of six children."
"Do as you please, but please don't make the task more difficult without my consent..."
Before Irenshere could finish speaking, Billis left the tent.
